First thing... this printer is kind of slow (4ppm color 16ppm B/W) compared to the newer models. But if you can deal with that you will have a printer that will run for a VERY long time. We have 4 of these, some with page counts well over 200,000, and they still print great. They produce professional looking color documents (far better than inkjets). I personally think they produce significantly better color than some of the newer 1 pass printers (like our Dell 5100CN). The toner is cheap. You can find it for about $25 for black and 99 for all 3 colors. The fuser/drum/and transfer belt are also reasonably priced if you look around. All in all I calculated the total cost per page at about three-quarters of a cent for black and white and about 2.7 cents for color(not including paper costs) This is almost 1/10th the cost of some of the newer "inexpensive" color lasers. You have to move up to a heavy duty one to get near this cost per page.
One other thing... This IS NOT a disposable printer. Some of the newer "cheap" models are not serviceable. You can't get individual parts (if you can get any parts at all). So if one little part breaks the whole printer is dead. With these 4500's pretty much anything that can wear out or break (solenoids, clutches) can be replaced. This extends the useable life almost indefinitely.
The only bad side is that if you get bad toner cartridges these printers are prone to toner "leaks” This USUALLY doesn't cause print quality issues, but does collect inside the printer and can make a mess. Toner cartridges do come with "toner wipes" for this very reason.
This model is built like a tank, built to last. It's print quality is excellent, even with photos and the consumables are relatively inexpensive, especially compared to the newer models. It might be a bit slower than those newer models but it will still be printing strong long after those newer and faster models have died.
I have had one of these printers since they first were introduced. The original price was around 4 grand. I've never had a problem with it, and since it's discuntinued consumbles are very in-expencive. I had lighting damange, took it to the shop estemated inital repair was for 1700.00. Insurance company paid off so I bought 2 more. Great quality laser prints, low cost of ownership. The printer is not to be confused with newer models, it's color print speed is only 4 pages per min. New Color Lasers have blistering speed, but consumbles cost more than the printers do. IE 4 cart at 200.00+ ea. These printers will due for me!!!!

Pros: Outstanding output to regular paper and much cheaper to run than InkJets.
Cons: At least 5 minutes to warm up from off
You'll feel like you have your very own print shop right in your home or office with the HP 4550N. I use it at home printing out photos from my digital camera. I also use it for printing my treasury budget Excel worksheets which contain color borders and graphics for our Booster Club. The ouput is sharp and crisp and the output colors match screen colors perfectly. The family has printed out numerous school projects as well with excellent results. The 4550n is a 125-plus pound behemoth requiring a very sturdy, large table as the 4550N also measures out at 20 by 22 by 16 inches. If plans call..
