As an experienced and highly-regarded midwife, Sibyl Danforth knows how to deliver a baby during difficult conditions, whether those conditions are caused by the mother’s health or a winter storm. “Midwives” by Chris Bohjalian is the story of one such homebirth and all that followed.
“Midwives” was an Oprah book selection in 1998, and since then Bohjalian has written bestseller after bestseller. This novel, like the others, is full of well-developed, believable characters, but is primarily driven by the plot. Reading this novel is to wonder what’s coming next, but in a good way.
If you like the novels of Jodi Picoult, you’ll probably like this book, too.
Midwives by Chris Bohjalian is easily one of my newest favs for good fictional reads. Bohjalian immediately captured my interest with his well-written, intelligent and witty dialog that sucked me into the story faster than I could probably ever pronounce his name properly. I had no particular calling to read about midwives or rural Vermont, yet Bohjalian leaves you feeling that the main characters are your neighbors or friends next door. His talent at combining humor and heart-wrenching situations is interesting and addictive. Be prepared to laugh in one paragraph and gasp in the next. I continued to be surprised and intruigued to the very last page. I am now in the middle of his "The Law of Similars" - ditto on all the above comments.
I thought this book was very well written with very accurate information. I found the book informative and unique in the way it was portrayed. Once you begin to read it, you will be hooked and amazed with the surprising ending! One book I will continue to keep on my bookshelf.
I found this book to be a great combination of coming-of-age (as it's told from the point of view of a woman recalling her teenage years) and a gripping suspense story, with the added bonus of taking us into a world unknown to most: that of midwives.
This was such a great book. I picked this book up and thought it would be another book that I might read a few chapters and be tired of the plot, I was really wrong. Once I started reading I didn't want to stop until I was on the last page. I highly recommend this book for anyone that like suspenceful books that keep your emotions on the edge.
