iPhone 1.0: Better than the hype/best cell phone ever
Review created: 07/13/07(updated 07/22/08)
421 of 455 people found this review helpful.

This review is for the 1st generation iPhone. For a review of the iPhone 3G see my other reviews.

Advantages iPhone 1.0 vs iPhone 3G:

- at present is its ability to be unlocked for use on other cell carriers. If using AT&T, no advantage

- EDGE data plan is $10 cheaper

I've owned a cell phone since 1992. I've always had a "top of the line cell phone" (I've always had AT&T = formerly Cingular = formerly BellSouth Mobility). I've had some really good phones: Motorola v60 "Vader", Nokia 6102i, and a Sony Ericsson T610. Then I've had some REALLY bad ones: Motorola RAZR, SLVR, Sony Ericsson s710a, Sony Ericsson Walkman W400, & most recently an HP iPaq 6515. In my 16 years of having cellphones, I've had over 100 (yes 100+) different models & makes.

I haven't had signal issues w/ many phones, it's always been asthetics that bothered me or the clumsy interfaces.

With every phone I've ever had, no matter how long I've had it; I always had a problem placing a call on hold & answering another call or joining a call into a 3-way call. With the iPhone interface being so well designed & the features so clearly labeled; I don't have that problem any more.

As for the design, the Sony Ericsson s710a was a beautiful phone, but the way it flipped open was awkward. When you opened it, it flipped upside down. You had to open it, then rotate the phone to use it.

With the HP iPaq 6515, I hated the keyboard. It was hard to see, crowded w/ characters & difficult to use w/ my large fingers. This is the problem I face w/ almost all phones w/ physical keyboards except the HTC 8525; which has the best phone keyboard of any phone. iPhone users should try the pogo stylus.

The iPhone keyboard is clear, easy to use, & once you get use to it - allows for very fast typing. I used it more in the first 10 days of owning my iPhone than I ever used ANY keyboard on ALL phones I've ever owned.

The camera on my Nokia 6201i was great, but it was difficult to use & to get pictures off of.The camera on the iPhone is terriffic - the viewfinder & capture buttons are crystal clear. It's easy to get the photos from iPhone to computer for editing.

Unlike most smartphones - that have Windows Mobile - the iPhone has an intuitive interface that's easy to understand & navigate. There's no need to read a manual - it's just simple to understand.

Before the iPhone I hated text messaging ... I texted more in the 1st 10 days than I have in the last 10 years!

Because an iPhone uses standard iPod sync & charge cables, accessories are easy to find.

Battery life is very good - even when utilizing power draining features like Wifi & Bluetooth.

I can actually use the calculator on an iPhone, unlike on other cell phones where you have to figure out what key corresponds to an add/multiply/divide.

The Google Maps feature is amazing w/ the ability to use satellite data. The GPS integration w/ LocateMe is awesome (upgrade to 1.1.

The weather forecast widget is nice to have - especially in the summer so you can plan your outdoor week or weekend spontaneously.

Only complaints:

- Edge data network is acceptable, but I wish was faster
- I'd really like to see bluetooth data exchange so I could sync an iPhone via bluetooth.
- FM transmitters don't work well due to interference

Invaild complaints:

- the keyboard is hard to use - at 1st it is ... it definitely takes getting used to. Once you start letting an iPhone correct your mistakes & just hitting the space bar, it becomes pretty fast

Apple iPhone Replacement Battery & Battery Lifespan?
Review created: 08/12/07

190 of 199 people found this review helpful.

Some people are upset about having to send in their iPhone, pay over $80. and get a loaner phone when the battery drains out? And here's an even deeper question: did Apple really pull the wool over our eyes when it comes to the iPhone battery?

Even if I did know about the non-user replacement iPhone battery, I would not have expected anything else. Sure, if I opened up the iPhone box and saw a removable battery, I would have been shocked to say the least. But alas, that did not happen. (I was not surprised)

Apple's policy on batteries for the iPod certainly hasn't slowed down iPod sales or damaged market share. Why would they change their ways for the iPhone. Do I wish the iPhone and Ipod had a replaceable battery with out having to pull out the solder kit. (and a very steady hand) Absolutely, Some are a little ticked that it will cost them &79 plus $6.95 for shipping when the batteries dies? Yes. Will Apple change their design? No

Here are some tips to extend your battery life:
1. Pay attention to just a few common sense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPhone. The most important thing is to keep your iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (even the glove box is bad). Heat will degrade your battery's life and performance the most.

2. Lock your iPhone

3. Turn off Wi-Fi (especially if you are not going to be using it)

4. Turn Off Bluetooth

5. Turn on auto-brightness

6. Turn off Equalizer

I hope this helps you out on you iPhone battery Lifespan. Enjoy it, The phone is a lot of fun!

Best regards,

LSCGAMERS

  iPhone 1.1.4 8GB

I both my first iPhone in October 2007. At this time the iphone was unlocked and with the Installer app. This app is very useful: It let's you download different programs and games. I've been pleased & satisfied with my iphone from day one. I am especially satisfied. It is only 2 MP, but still you can take great pictures for a every day use. At times, espesially at night the camera won't shoot it best pictures. Other features on it: Youtube, safari (without flash at this time, september 2008), wather and so on.
If you have had a small phone and thinking of buying an iPhone, remember the iPhone is a little bit large, and it takes to to get used to it, but when you do, you will love it. I loved it from the first day, and I still do.
I recommend to buy screen protector ( I have had mine on for about 6 months without changing and got a lot of scratched on it, so Im going to change it now)

An A++ phone!

  iPhone 1st Generation
Review created: 09/05/08
by:

I received my iPhone and was very pleased with the product in the beginning. Apparently Apple has some major issues with upgrading that needs to be looked at. After only having the iPhone for eight (8)days it completely stopped working and went into what I was told was "BRICK" mode and when trying to restore the phone I would always get an error 1604 which turned into error 20 and back to error 1604. Being that this was a gift for my son, he was totally upset, which in turn made me very unhappy. Hopefully Apple will get on its job and fix the bugs that it has with the 2.0 upgrade! I will say that after talking with an Apple rep, I was given the opportunity to return the iPhone through Apple Care Assistance and they in return could not fix my iPhone. But they sent me a new refurbished iPhone that is working perfectly. I hope that it continues to work and we don't have anymore problems. The reason behind the rating of poor is because of upgrading issues and bugs that need to be fixed before letting the public receive defective products.

The buyer told me t hat he will send the item ,but he never did, I have opened dispute on paypal about the incident... This is the the worst experience to have encountered for somebody who relys on e-bay for buying anything for reasonable. you can go head and look at my record.. I have bought many items from e-bay...but the last transaction that I had with this person make me lose my interest in e-bay

The iPhone isn't perfect, but it is heads and shoulders above it's nearest competition. It only takes a couple of minutes of "show and tell" to know most of what is required to operate its many functions.

I decided to get an unlocked iphone because i moved to Spain and needed a phone that would work with a prepay plan. The 3G had just come out so i figured there would be a lot of people selling the first gen. now that i have it i dont know what i did without it. Everything from my grocery list, skype phone calls, and day to day planning is taken care of.

This product is a very good product. I recommend it for those who are constantly on the go and love to browse the internet. The texting on the iphone is a bit difficult starting out but over time I believe one will get the hang of it. It would be nice if you could move the iphone horizontal and text. Unfortunately you can only do that when surfing the net.

  AMAZING IPHONE!
Review created: 09/03/08

Some existing Apple iPhone 2G owners have already upgraded to the 3G version if they were lucky enough to get their hands on a handset, but what about those that are still not sure about upgrading.

If you have the first generation iPhone you may wonder if it’s worth upgrading, especially when you have the 2.0 Firmware installed on your device. Will you need the GPS and 3G options?

When your buying the iPhone for the first time then the latest 3G versions is a great deal, it’s cheaper this time round and has a few features that improve on the first-gen phone.

As an original iPhone owner I will be upgrading to 3G soon, this is because I browse the web on the move and use it for business, having a faster 3G connection will help a lot and as it will be free to upgrade on the price plan I am after, there is nothing to lose.

For existing users that do not need GPS or faster data speeds, it may seem a little pointless upgrading, why spend $200/£100 on a phone you do not need?

The new iPhone features a plastic back that some people feel gives the iPhone 3G a cheap feel compared to the metal back of the first iPhone. This new feature is said to improve reception.

Other improvements include 2g lighter, the in-built speaker has been enhanced, call quality is improved, and the headphone jack will now work with standard headphones and cars that have an audio jack.

Will you upgrade to iPhone 3G and do you need faster data or GPS?

  iPhone revolution
Review created: 09/01/08

beeing a PC user for more than a double decade, ipod and iphone made me switch to mac. I now own an iMac 24", a Macbook Pro 17", an iPod touch, 2 iphones * & 16 gig, a few ipods.

what made me need (yes need and not want) o have an iphone is first the design. very slim and yet solid, I side it in my pants pocket without fears. the next good point is the ease of usage. it's iconised and ony one button can't go wrong. I don't really like so many button stuffs that get you confused.
I used to have plenty of mobile phones but never used more than 2 features, with the iphone, i have my emails synchronised, my contacts, my calendar, i check the weathers, time zones, the stock markets, navigation, texting and even play slide show of the kids when away from home. what a wonderful piece of technology in your palm. Now with Mobile Me, you can even push your data to all compatible devices. That rocks.

However, there are a few things that would make the iphone the only thing you need to have:
- the ability to disable the automatic spelling when typing SMS or text. it is very annoying that it keeps changing your typing in something it thinks adequate.
- the bluetooth module is not as easy to use
- the network locking thing. Why can't I put another sim card in when I am overseas when I already pay for a 2 year contract? as mentioned before all my stuffs are in he phone and i don't want to pay for the coast of roaming when overseas and still need to use my iphone.

Other than that my iPhones 9yes I carry 2 of them) are the only thing that I now carry on me when stepping out the door.
