I have watched this film numerous times, and every time I come away from it inspired to be a better person. I think that is a great indicator of a good film. It stands up for what is right. Nickleby grows into adulthood and is challenged by an immoral world surrounding him. He is the victor and stands up for those without a voice. Excellent movie.
I owned this on vhs but wanted to upgrade to dvd because I watch this movie a lot and plan on having it for a long time. This story is so wonderful. It is an interesting story of a family torn apart and put together. It also includes a love story. The main characters have integrity and good morals. I loved to watch this with my 8 year old to show her how to stand up for her beliefs no matter what.
Our son is in a stage version of Nicholas Nickleby at his high school. He plays Ralph Nickleby, Nicholas' evil uncle. So, we wanted to see a dramatized version of the story. We like Dickens and this is one of his lesser done stories.
My wife and I are always on the lookout for great family movies (no sexual content, no gore, etc...). Nicholas Nickleby is a fascinating classic and a pleasure to view. There are a few mild profanities; however, this is a tale with multiple morals woven throughout. This DVD was great entertainment!
This is a great movie with romance, intrigue, villains and a very good looking hero. The story shows the dark side of the period and the settings and costumes are perfect. This is an excellent adaptation of this Charles Dickens classic.
If you dislike any of Dickens' other works because they were too dark or depressing, you definately won't enjoy this movie. It has an excellent plot, good storyline, fair acting, lovely music, and lots of suspense, but definately has a dark, dismal overtone. It's pretty intense and contains some harsh, heart-breaking cruelty as well. But if you enjoyed Oliver Twist or Great Expectations, you will probably find this film enjoyable as well. Definately exciting, gripping, and touching!
If you're really interested in what Dickens wrote, buy the 4 DVD set of the BBC marathon performance that we had in the USA on TV. It's expensive but worth it.
This version is like the old Classic Comics; it's short and simpleminded. The production itself is fine, but the script changes emphasis from the book and leaves no room for all those character shadings between white and black. The actor who plays the title role is pretty; that's his only virtue. He has no depth (see Roger Rees in the longer version for real acting) and plays everything in Nicholas' marathon of a life in the same bland way.
A hidden treasure! I never heared of the movie before and was pleasently surprized. This is a well acted movie with fun characters. A good family film for families with older children.
