  Wonderful Film, Terrific Acting
Review created: 08/07/08

I first saw this movie on pay-per view and was blown away. It wasn't what I expected from the previews, but after half an hour in the movie I was alread blown away by Daniel Day Lewis' acting ability. The plot revolves around Lewis who is as he says "an oil man" who hunts down land where oil may be profitable. Lewis lets nothing get in his way religion, love, and eventually not even his son. Lewis' ability to tie such a dark character to the plot with such ease is why I rated this film at an excellent. A must have for any true movie lovers.

I expected alot more out of this movie. It has a good story line but is a very slow moving movie. I actually fell asleep a few times. It is also a very long movie. Around 3+ hours long. My husband stayed awake! He said he liked the story line but he also said it was dragged out to long. Also, by the title we expected this to be gory! We like horror flicks. There was "very" little blood. Only the last few minutes of it!

I thought this movie would be better than what it was
Review created: 07/03/08

I think I set myself up for this movie to be really good because of the previews, but was kinda disappointed. I also hyped it because it came in second place for best picture, so I thought it would be decent, but I wouldnt recommend.

Daniel Day Lewis does a superior acting job in this movie. He is at the top of his game in this movie, the best I have seen him yet. That could be why he won the Oscar for best actor I guess. Movie has a good plot and is very entertaining. It would have been better if we could have looked into Plainview's character somewhat more. The only part I did not like was the ending. Not that it was not good but the writers seemed to have doubled up on the scenes and jammed too much info in the last scenes and it sorta ended abruptly while the remainder of the movie spread out through the years. If I were the writer it would have had a different ending. But it is a great movie and well worth watching.

This movie has the most horrible background music, horrible ending. I wish I had RENTED this movie instead of buying it. Although, I wouldn't suggest anyone else waste their money on this movie. It also lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, and I would have to say that I'd like a refund of those hours!!!

I am sure the movie would be better if bobola7 didn't sell faulty product and the music on the film wasn't incredibly annoying.

Very good acting and realistic era sets

While I didnt think the film lived up to it's hype, I thought it to be a great acting achievement of Daniel Day-Lewis. He is brilliant here. I thought the sets and locations fantastic. I didnt care for the ending of the story/film, there could have been more told. I will however watch this one again when I get my new TV, very soon.

This is a good film, with a compelling story, 1st rate direction & an accomplished, effective cast but, at it's core, it's Lewis' film & he delivers one of the finest lead performance that I've ever seen.... He is, simply, outstanding, & the reason i had to have this film....
Also, the story hits home....
Cheers! captbbones

  The Best Film of 2007
Review created: 06/05/08
by:

Daniel Day-Lewis gives probably one of the five best performances in the history of world cinema, up there with titanic and legendary performances like Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces or Jean-Paul Belmondo in Breathless. Day-Lewis is powerful and incredible. As director, P.T. Anderson is his equal. The music is also amazing and the cinematography pristine and precise. Better than No Country for Old Men, though not as simply entertaining as Juno. 5 stars out of 5.

  This Will Be A Masterpiece
Review created: 05/23/08

I rented this movie on a Wednesday, and bought it (via eBay) on Thursday.

The two of my friends that have seen (pieces) of this movie complained that it was boring... I just don't undersand that. No, it's not full of full contact fight seens, or high speed chases, or bombs, or whatever. It is a story of how one average man built a complete empire and the tribulations he faces throughout.

Daniel Day Lewis' performance is as amazing as ever. He is so good at completely becoming each character that he portrays. Seeing him as Daniel Plainview an ambitious, headstrong man who keeps little faith in the human race, it is hard to find any comparison to his John Proctor from The Crucible. You find yourself being proud for him, sad for him, humiliated and ashamed of him.

Paul Dano's Eli Sunday is equally fantastic. Dano puts forth a powerful performance that makes Eli very easily hated. The scenes in his church are riveting!

This movie is highly recommended to anyone. Especially those particularly keen to "people watching."

Not a masterpiece, but still good
Review created: 05/12/08
by:

Not the epic masterpiece is was made out to be, but it was a thrilling, expansive film for film people. One thing PTA knows how to do is make long films. This is a very long film, but it's long because it has a lot to say. An A+ performance for Day-Lewis carries most of this film, but I do not believe Paul Dano was ready to take on such a big, involved role. The best aspect of the film, though, was Jonny Greenwood's score; it was brooding, intense, and made sense. A classic, but the kind you'll see flipping through the channels in 30 years.

  Genius.
Review created: 05/06/08
by:

To start, I believe this movie is a masterpiece. Though I am certainly NOT knocking "No Country for Old Men", which was stellar in every aspect, I believe the scope and achievement by Paul Thomas Anderson was of greater detail and magnitude. Of which, I think this should have won the Oscar for Best Picture. Having said that, Daniel Day-Lewis was a shoe-in for winning Oscar for Best Leading performance by an Actor. Indeed, I have trouble recalling ANY performance of late that even comes close to rivaling the intensity and departure of belief that Lewis instilled as the self-made oil tycoon, Daniel Plainview.
Anderson expresses many artistic touches throughout the film. In fact, dialog doesn't start until well after 15 minutes! The movie is gritty, honest and intense. The acting by pretty much all the actors is excellent and spot on. It's as if we are looking directly at history/factual events. As intense as Lewis steps into Plainview’s shoes, his acting is surprisingly NOT forced, as some of Gary Oldman's works tend to be. I don't know if Lewis ever engages in "Character Acting" but with this movie, I would believe so. The accents sound real, the body language looks real, and the clothing looks like it was found in a chest somewhere in backwoods Oklahoma or Nevada. The movie doesn't feel rushed whatsoever at any point. I find this amazing especially since it clocks in at just less than 3 hours. Why? Because Lewis' performance is SO gripping and enthralling! He's a loose cannon of pure, unchecked ambition and drive. It's as if one cannot wait to see what he'll do next!
The score at first, I thought was the weirdest and most mis-placed I've ever heard. Then about halfway through the movie, I realized the score was dancing tango with the acting and current scene. It wasn't complementing the movie; it was PART of the movie. It significantly added to the unpredictability of the drama. This is something, I think is a bit unusual because most scores/movies tend to affect your emotions, they usually aren't an emotion all to themselves.
The last 15-20 minutes of the movie is as close to perfection as I think ANY actor can EVER achieve. It is absolutely BRILLANT!!! I had to check myself to make sure I was breathing. The tension stayed high, the drama stayed high and the unpredictability factor went through the roof. The metaphors and delivery was sheer genius. And as the mostly bloodless movie promises in it's title, it finally delivers at the end with one act and one sentence that will be remembered for a VERY LONG TIME.

it is difficult to get an idea of who daniel day lewis might be as he totally allows himself to be devoured by the character in becoming daniel plainview. i don't know i have seen a better movie in recent years in terms of authenticity. the setting and acting draw the viewer inward to such a degree that it seems you become a part of the film. it is a gritty reality of a man's obssesion i believe many could identify with in some form. excellent movie- period.

  The Best Actor goes to...
Review created: 05/02/08

Daniel Day-Lewis, and well deserved it was. Day Lewis has done some great work over the years, but he totally owns this movie. His portrayal of a greedy ambitious oil tycoon in the early days of the American Oil boom is definately Oscar material. From the beginning of the movie, where there is almost no dialogue for about twenty minutes, he has you totally transfixed on the character. His ability to personify this man, and the varying subtle and overt evil he represents is a wonder to behold. Attention to detail is key, as director Anderson takes you to era in which empires were built from the sweat of a man's brow and through ruthless dealings,at times you can believe you can smell the crude. Great supporting performances all round but none can match Day Lewis. The ending, has to be seen to be believed, I won't ruin it here, but the title has more than one meaning, let's say. Buy the DVD, you'll see. 10/10

  Corkscrewy Path
Review created: 04/25/08

"There Will Be Blood" is certain to divide audiences, particularly with its final section, which takes its story and its central character down a corkscrewy path more readily accepted in literature or the theater. (Too much has been written about the 1927-set coda, so we'll leave it at that.) The film's problems include a bit of confusing doubling in the roles of siblings played by Paul Dano. But three-quarters of it is brilliant. And as early 20th Century oil man Daniel Plainview, whose eyes glow, however deceptively, with paternal concern one second and turn as cold as a snake's the next, Day-Lewis gives the kind of performance that does more than win Oscars. It rises to a rich and strange occasion, and the actor's work--joyously accomplished technique on one level, mysterious emotional reserves on another--will be debated and celebrated for years.

I liked this movie very much, but I don't think all people will. I thought it was a very good story, and I love Daniel Day Lewis. He gives a very powerful performance, and the story is very interesting. I enjoyed seeing the way things were for men in the oil business here in America during the early 20th century. I would recommend this movie to any fan of Daniel Day Lewis, and to anyone who enjoys a movie for a good story, not just action or comedy, although both can be found in this film. "Two Thumbs Up!"

  There Will Be Blood
Review created: 03/30/08

This was the best film of 2007, with apologies to "No Country For Old Men". Daniel Day-Lewis is at his best as Daniel Plainview a misanthropic and sometimes sadistic oilman. Plainview will do anything he can to succeed and stop others from succeeding. Paul Dano also stars and does a wonderful job as small town preacher Eli Sunday.

The movie is slow. If you are looking for wall to wall action, this isn't your movie. It's more like "Gangs Of New York". It's a story well told, but the action and intensity comes in bursts throughout the film. The characters are well hashed out in this intense masterpiece by P.T. Anderson (Boogie Nights/Magnolia).

  I Drink Your Milkshake!

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film is presented in an assured and confident manner. Anderson is the most naturally gifted filmmaker of his generation, a fact that is evident here. Packed with breathtaking shots and scenes of boiling intensity, the movie makes no apologies about its tendency towards the grandeur inherent in telling an epic story that spans decades. Perhaps the first thing that will strike viewers will be the unavoidable use of imagery that comes naturally when setting a story in the old west. However, Anderson's latest effort also packs enough depth and complexity to let you know that it never relies solely on this foundation. Although ripe with symbolism, There Will Be Blood does not settle for merely the pretense of poignancy by imagery. Instead it gives us complex characters that prove to be the soul of the story.

The film is anchored by the powerful presence of Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview, a silver miner turned oilman. Day-Lewis' performance is a thing of beauty. Equal parts larger-than-life and nuanced, his Daniel Plainview perfectly embodies the spirit of a salesman while putting across the multiple layers required for the portrayal of a man with an all-too-human desire for power. Critics of Daniel Day-Lewis performance will say that his portrayal is far too theatrical, a criticism also given to his portrayal of Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. The reality is that Day-Lewis does not carry this to everyone of his performances. However, he knows when a character is supposed to be showman. Plainview is a salesman and without his swagger he would be nowhere as a businessman. What is truly outstanding is that, unlike lesser actors, Day-Lewis is able to bring out the more human aspects of Plainview that make him a fascinating character to watch.

Joining Day-Lewis is Paul Dano as Eli Sunday. Dano balances out his character appropriately, giving Sunday the calm and silent demeanor that stands in sharp contrast to his passion for religion. While Dano does not deliver the performance of his career in this film, he does show hints of tremendous talent in his portrayal of an evangelical preacher that stands in opposition of Plainview's search for power. The rest of the cast simply takes a supporting role amidst this struggle.

Providing the score for this conflict is Johnny Greenwood's haunting score. Greenwood manages to accentuate the barren desert setting with a score that is both minimalist and entrancing. Although it never rises to the showboating highs of Howard Shore, the music enhances the dark, pessimistic, and emotionally taxing tone of the film while never taking center stage away from the performances.

There Will Be Blood is an achievement in cinematography, acting, writing and film-making unlike anything released in 2007. It is a film that puts its focus on wholly unlikable characters and dares to take you in deeper despite this fact. Like Raging Bull, it is a character study of a man who you would not normally want to know and who you will be unable to forget about after it is all said and done. You may not want to revisit this film anytime soon, but it will be for all the right reasons. It is a powerful and emotionally draining experience.
