I just dont care for the cinematography.... Everything is in a golden fuzzy/blured type light. It hurts my eyes. I guess the were trying to make it look vintage but I did NOT enjoy. I am not into robot taking over the world movies either.. My kids flipped out when I gave it to them. They absolutly LOVE this. I could not finish watching.
Buck Rogers style movie, filmed in black and white and partially colored, for a very effective 1950s sci fi atmosphere. It has everything. A handsome hero, beautiful heriones, eerie space ships, killer robots and a fresh plot with a suprise ending. This well directed effort could turn into a cult film with a very large following.
What more couls you ask for, except equally good sequels? I predict there will be sequels. This is a great fun film everyone in the family can enjoy!
The story line was intriguing and the strange technology that they use were good.
The cinematography was painful to watch. It would have been ok for the first few minutes but for it to be that way for the whole movie was a little much. I kept on waiting for it to clear up and look normal. The action would have been much better if it hadn't been the way it was. I guess its a good kids movie cause they don't care, but I found it hard to finish watching it because of the way it looked. After about five minutes I wanted to turn it off and it was all I could do to not turn it off.
I love the 30s-style color-art direction and production design of this movie, and the cast is fun, and it has moments of suspense and high adventure, although the pacing of this story is uneven, and the script just bogs down for minutes at a time. I got it because it is a personal favorite that, frankly, I don't think I will find on cable or broadcast TV.
Amazing special effects. The look and feel of the movie is unique with a 1930's Art Deco look. The characters are never too camp or too serious. They strike just the right note.
The movie captures the spirit of old serials and comics.
It was a fun romp into Sci Fiction with all sorts of improbable characters and events taking you into imaginative adventure. Not entirely like the others but quality and adventure suck you into the vast panorama. Animation was great, but the classic good vs evil is always a winner. This time you wonder how good will survive the sorta plausible catastrophes. Lots of 40's nick-nacks and bravado reinforced a can do, give 'um hell, era from which to beat back whatever they threw at you. It is another movie for the ages. Maybe I'll get a big screen TV someday to watch it in all of its' grandeur. Missed the movie - HOORAY for DVDs.

This movie is a feast for the eyes. Done in a retro 40's SF (that's "speculative fiction", not "science fiction") style, it has a good tight story line similar to those used on the old Flash Gordon serials. Dark and forboding at times, bright at others, lots of things you just have to say "WOW" as you see them unfold on the screen. This is the kind of movie you turn down the lights and watch on the 50" plasma to get the full effect from.
Jude Law carries the role of the title character well. Gwenneth Paltrow is gorgeous as a retro 40's newspaper reporter. Angelina Jolie's role is little more than a cameo, even though she's on the screen quite a bit towards the end of the film. The extras on the DVD, including the story of how the movie was developed over the course of years, are truly excellent. It's a shame they didn't make a sequel to this movie.
This is a very cool and entertaining flick ... especially if you like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow or Jude Law. I got it mostly for my kids to watch as they like sci-fi/fantasy/action/adventure. I must confess to being a bit of a sci-fi buff myself and was happy to see that the look and feel was a great contemporary attempt at the original. It is a fun movie to watch and the Dolby 5.1 is outstanding.
I'll admit, I am a sci fi fan and really enjoy a great film, sci fi or not. I've seen a number of sci fi films and found too many lack a strong plot, are packed with foul language or the mediocre acting or CG distracts from the story. This moview was well casted, well written, and offers good eye candy. I base a movie's success on whether or not it can make me forget where I am for 90 minutes by transporting me into the world on screen - which Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow did. This is a very entertaining and charming film, a bit scary for very little ones, but not loaded with profanities preventing a family movie night. It appeals to kids, teens and adults (male or female). The characters are flirty, funny, comicbooky (in a good way), serious about their missions and the movie's tone very exciting (especially commendable considering the entire movie was shot in front of a blue screen). The graphics are stand up and amazing. It is evident a lot of hard work was put into the incredible details. A wonderful film I never tire of watching. A great film to have in your collection.
I first heard of this movie when I saw LOTR: The Return of the King December of '03. I was stunned. It was 1930s retro sci-fi, art deco. Everything you saw was like a Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers serial, or the Max Fleischer animated shorts. Then it was delayed. Then delayed again. Then it was released in September, which is like putting something direct-to-dvd. Hardly anyone saw it and within a few weeks it was out of theaters. For this I blame the studio. There was hardly any marketing or tie-ins or promotion. I saw it opening night and the theater was only about half-full. Sigh. This was my second-favorite movie of 2004 (Spider-man 2 being the first of course). Jude Law is Joe Sullivan, also known as Sky Captain, a mercenary who gets called time and again to save the world. Gwyneth Paltrow is Polly Perkins, a Lois Lane-type reporter and former love interest. Even the supporting Cast, including Angelina Jolie and archived footage of Sir Laurence Olivier. This is a movie I can't recommend enough. It has everything the original Star Wars movies had, and the last three didn't: a story that didn't take itself too seriously and characters you actually wanted to see and you cared about. Oh, and a cameo by King Kong. I'm not kidding. If nothing else, at least go out and rent this movie, or put it in your Netflix queue.
With the movie name, I was expecting a better movie. I have learned now, do not go by the title, or the stars. This is a fair to average movie only. Was hoping for better.
I wanted to see the movie and I found it on Half.com really fast and easy. Really fast shipper and great seller, I realy enjoyed th movie it really was a great movie and it reminded me of the old serials.
Impressive, cinematic flight of fancy and fantasy. A treat to watch with surround sound that ROCKS. The Special Features add to the enjoyment. You'll enjoy this movie more if you can suspend your judgement about it until the end. The last line is the "topping on the dessert". HIGHLY recommended.
