Epic Showdown as Harry Potter Is Initiated to Adulthood
Review created: 07/19/07
49 of 66 people found this review helpful.

So, here it is at last: The final confrontation between Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived, the Chosen One, the “symbol of hope” for both the Wizard and Muggle worlds, and Lord Voldemort, He Who Must Not Be Named, the nefarious leader of the Death Eaters and would-be ruler of all. Good versus Evil. Love versus Hate. The Seeker versus the Dark Lord.
J. K. Rowling’s monumental, spellbinding epic, 10 years in the making, is deeply rooted in traditional literature and Hollywood sagas — from the Greek myths to Dickens and Tolkien to “Star Wars.” And true to its roots, it ends not with modernist, “Soprano”-esque equivocation, but with good old-fashioned closure: a big-screen, heart-racing, bone-chilling confrontation and an epilogue that clearly lays out people’s fates. Getting to the finish line is not seamless — the last part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh and final book in the series, has some lumpy passages of exposition and a couple of clunky detours — but the overall conclusion and its determination of the main characters’ story lines possess a convincing inevitability that make some of the prepublication speculation seem curiously blinkered in retrospect.
Harry’s journey will propel him forward to a final showdown with his arch enemy, and also send him backward into the past, to the house in Godric’s Hollow where his parents died, to learn about his family history and the equally mysterious history of Dumbledore’s family. At the same time, he will be forced to ponder the equation between fraternity and independence, free will and fate, and to come to terms with his own frailties and those of others. Indeed, ambiguities proliferate throughout “The Deathly Hallows”: we are made to see that kindly Dumbledore, sinister Severus Snape and perhaps even the awful Muggle cousin Dudley Dursley may be more complicated than they initially seem, that all of them, like Harry, have hidden aspects to their personalities, and that choice — more than talent or predisposition — matters most of all.

It is Ms. Rowling’s achievement in this series that she manages to make Harry both a familiar adolescent — coping with the banal frustrations of school and dating — and an epic hero, kin to everyone from the young King Arthur to Spider-Man and Luke Skywalker. This same magpie talent has enabled her to create a narrative that effortlessly mixes up allusions to Homer, Milton, Shakespeare and Kafka, with silly kid jokes about vomit-flavored candies, a narrative that fuses a plethora of genres (from the boarding-school novel to the detective story to the epic quest) into a story that could be Exhibit A in a Joseph Campbell survey of mythic archetypes.

In doing so, J. K. Rowling has created a world as fully detailed as L. Frank Baum’s Oz or J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, a world so minutely imagined in terms of its history and rituals and rules that it qualifies as an alternate universe, which may be one reason the “Potter” books have spawned such a passionate following and such fervent exegesis. With this volume, the reader realizes that small incidents and asides in earlier installments (hidden among a huge number of red herrings) create a breadcrumb trail of clues to the plot, that Ms. Rowling has fitted together the jigsaw-puzzle pieces of this long undertaking with Dickensian ingenuity and ardor.

  The perfect end
Review created: 04/10/08(updated 04/10/08)

I started reading the Harry Potter series when I was 13. It was perfect. I related to harry perfectly (even the whole wizard thing). Anyway, I kind of grew up with the characters, so you can imagine what a bitter-sweet feeling the last book brought me. Before the book came out, I naturally re-read the previos 6 books to this enveloping saga. I have to say, that although I was afraid of losing my adolescent friends, there could not have been a better way to end it. I highly recommend this book!

Tried to get this three times and each seller says they don't have it anymore and refund my money. I'll try again, but I'm not getting my hopes up until it's actually in my hands. I'm sure I won't be putting it down once I get it though. Consider this a preemptive grade.

I bought this book to finish out the series. It was a little slow in some places but overall I enjoyed it. The ending brought a conclusion to the story that did not leave feeling cheated or saying what happens next?

Better Than the Last Few Harry Books
Review created: 08/07/08
by:

Although long, this book did not unneccsarily drag on as some of the previous in the series had. The book really kept me interested throughout and I did not want to put it down until it was finished. I was even disappointed at the end knowing it was the last book in the series. I especially liked learning some of the history of Snape which really gave a lot of insight to his character. A very good read!!

Sorry to see the story end, loved it all 4 x I read it.
Review created: 08/02/08

Everything about all 7 books is simply amazing. I have read the entire series 4 times through and now Im starting on my 5th time. Im sad to see it all end. I just wish the movies would follow the story line better, they were doing a great job up until "Order of the Pheonix" thats when it went to hell. Didnt care how they changes everything in the movie arounbd from the book, I just hope they get back on track for "The HalfBlood Prince".

I was waiting for the Harry Potter book to come out in paperback. The hardcover book in the stores was very pricey. I was amazed when I could purchase the book on-line and for the price I did pay for it. I am very pleased with the book.

I LOVE this book! Excellent Series, HP is SO COOL
Review created: 07/24/08(updated 07/24/08)

I TOTALLY love Harry Potter! I have read all of the previous six books over and over, and couldn't wait for the Seventh and highly anticipated book to arrive! I have now read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows many times as well, and I love it more and more each time I read it. To honor the 1 year anniversiary, here is a review:

The entire Harry Potter series just keeps getting better! There just isn't a thing as a bad HP book--I love all 7 of them. One of the things I like the most about Book 7 is the way that the story progresses even more and questions are answered that I gathered in the back of my mind since I read the first book. Therefore, I love the way the Seventh book ties in with the rest of the series. The Half Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows are very highly connected, and if you haven't read Half Blood Prince, some of Deathly Hallows won't make since (Horcruxes). The book has a mixture of comedy and dark seriousness. Sometimes it is just one sentence mixed in with a serious chapter that is hilarious and lightens the tone, but at the same time, keeps things in perspective. From the beginning of the book, the serious tone sets in (Chapter One deals strictly with Voldemort and the Death Eaters in a meeting at Malfoy Manor). That chapter really sets in the tone for the serious nature of how important it is that the Death Eaters don't rule and win. The scene is described so well, and from one slight sentence you can tell from Chapter One that Draco Malfoy is not a pure evil Death Eater at heart (since he falls off his chair after Avada Kadavra is cast on Charity Burbage)--but he is still Slytherin and a Death Eater, just not like Bellatrix (however I would still love to jinx Draco to show him PureBloods aren't superior.

One of my favorite chapters is when Hermione takes the Polyjuice Potion to disguise herself as Bellatrix Lestrange, and then attempts to break in to Gringotts. I relate to the character of Hermione very well, and when Hermione says that she hates Bellatrix's wand because "it has some of her" in it, I totally agree. Also, it is hilarious when Harry tells Hermione that she has to trea people like they are scum, since she has to act like Bellatrix!

I'm a Gryffindor girl and have Gryffindor pride, so I love the leadership, courage, intelligence, and bravery that Hermione has through this book. She and Ron will have their disputes (especially when Ron temporarily leaves the Trio), but it only makes since, especially since they secretly like each other so much but have trouble admitting to it. I was so impressed with how JK Rowling made Hermione stand up to Bellatrix even under the pressure of the Cruciatus curse cast by Bellatrix in Malfoy Manor. It just shows the strength of Hermione's character.

Anybody will love this book, I'm 16 and I totally LOVE the books because I can relate to the feelings of the characters.

Great book, it has the PERFECT ending, the epic climax is superb, Good overpowers Evil, great epilogue, and the adventure that follows from beginning to end is so exciting it almost makes you wish it were real! Reading the HP series makes me wish I could enter Platform 9 and 3/4 and go attend Hogwarts as a Gryffindor, fight the Death Eaters, jinx Draco Malfoy, and take part of the magical world of Harry Potter. It ends just as I hoped, with some unexpected twists (Snape), and you must READ IT!

READ THE BOOK, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

I just wish there were more HP books

This book is amazing. A wonderful read for all ages. Even if you've never picked up a Harry Potter series novel before, J.K. Rowling explains necessary background information so anyone can follow. It was a great end to the series and wish there were many more sequels. Buy a copy or the whole series for all your friends, you won't be disappointed. It's an easy read that you can't put down.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Review created: 06/22/08
by:

I liked how this book tied into Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. These two books are directly connected. You cannot read the seventh book and understand it completely without reading the sixth book. Very important. The Deathly Hallows does an excellent job of completing Harry and Tom Riddle's (Voldemort) stories. Their likenesses and their differences and why they were alike or different. Harry's connections with Dumbledore and Snape were also very important in this book. The entire book left you wondering why Dumbledore had to die in the sixth book until the very end. It was very climactic. It also showed the true devotion that Hermione and Ron had with Harry. That they weren't just friends, they were more like family. Each family has ups and downs just like their friendships did. They had good moments as well as bad moments. I recommend this whole series to anyone wanting to read about how good can overcome evil and how devotion to the ones that you love is important. If you want a gripping tale about how a child ends up saving those he loves and cares about, then you want to read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (after you read the first 6 books of the series. Seriously, the last one doesn't make sense unless you know the whole story.)

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It

status if this was a scam. My feedback is real and I will answer you
on any question! Here is what you do. Click on the link below,
register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete
just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise
your account will sit in limbo until you do). This is not like other
sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3 different
pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with nothing else
to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster
online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would
regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not
use them to get a free 360 System or cash (I did the Dermacia.com for
a 30 day free trial and it only cost me shipping & handling and i got
credit for it the same day). Look at the offers and choose the one
that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer,
simply refer 8-13 people (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to
do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on
eBay, and you'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your 360 System or your selected item for free, I
chose the 360 Elite System. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these
companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all
the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY! They use us as
advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which
goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as
Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you

This is the last book in the series, I have the complete set except for this book, I've been waiting anxiously to read it for months. The book was everything I'd hoped for. It was truly a fitting end for Harry Potter and friends, but I've love to have the series continue on with Harry's children. Even though Harry killed Voldemort, I don't believe Malfoy has changed and I think the series could explore their children and their interaction at Hogwarts.
