In an age where fad diets come and go faster than Hollywood celebrities change significant others, it is refreshing to find a book about taking care of YOU - as in helping your body live younger, healthier and maybe longer as a result.
The authors of this book are doctors who were part of the team that treated President Clinton's recent heart condition. One of the authors also popularized the concept of calculating your "real" age (which, depending on lifestyle may be more or less than your calendar age). They're also Oprah favorites (they were guests on the show in May 2005, which is where I first discovered them). They wrote You as an "owner's manual" to help regular people better understand how what we eat and how we live impacts every single part of our lives. The book is written in very plain English (OK, it's a little corny at times) and has lots of practical tips on how to gauge our health (e.g., you'll learn what your poop should look like and why that's important). You'll also learn how to protect the health of your heart, reduce the number of wrinkles you'll amass in a lifetime, and how increasing your tomato intake can decrease your risk of cancer and decrease arterial aging (hint, just 10 tablespoons of tomato sauce is equal in nutritional value to 165 raw tomatoes!!).
From diagrams to illustrate their points to silly jokes that drive their point home, the authors make it extremely interesting to read and easily digestible (hehe, an example of the humor you might find in this book). In a nutshell, this book provides useful information on what foods/beverages to put into your body, how much sleep to get and how to monitor yourself in order to live younger and healthier. It is a book about living healthy - not about becoming model thin - so approach it with the desire to improve the overall you.
YOU: The Owner’s Manual is a good quick read – though it’s purpose is to help you improve your overall health through simple explanations of health concepts, it does a great job of providing a lesson in anatomy and sound health. Each chapter is dedicated different organ systems and parts of the body. Topics covered in detail include the cardiovascular system, brain, skeletal system, joints and muscles, lungs, the digestive system and sexual organs, the immune system, skin, and a separate section that discusses cancer.
Think of this book as a primer on health. If you don’t enjoy most health books that espouse diets and feel like a step back to high school biology, you’ll appreciate this book. It is easy to read and its format reminds me of the ease of reading found in the Dummies book series. After the basics are covered, the book moves into a lifestyle action plan that acts as an easy to follow guide to improve your health. It explains adjustments that you can make to your lifestyle in order to live a longer and much healthier life. Simple tips explain how you can stay abreast of your health and avoid the see-saw of dieting and exercise.
I’m not a big fan of the diagrams and sketches in the book – it appears as if they were designed to appeal to a broad audience, but for most of us, such silly diagrams are unnecessary. Assuming you can look past that, I highly recommend this book as candidate for a cover-to-cover read and as a reference guide for your bookshelf.
Because my wife wanted it...so to make her happy...I bought it. And she is in love with it...thanks to you guys...I didnt have to go to the bookstore..;)
A great book for any parent that wants to give their child a talk about the body and how it works. A must have. The illustrations are large and funny.... definitely will keep your attention to the last page.
I liked the fact that is was cheaper then buying it new. I like the fact that I got it quickly. I bought it as a gift and it was easier to find it on Ebay then to go shopping for it. Good book be a reputable doctor. That was my number one concern.
I bought this book to better understand my "almost 40" body and what would make it work more efficiently. This easy to follow and sometimes quirky examples make this a great read that is informative and interesting to read. If you don't learn something from this book that will be invaluable to your health, then you need to stay on the couch!
Lots of great information about your body and how it works. Author puts explanations in layman's terms and allows you to draw a picture in your mind. Very easy to follow and very interesting.
Thank you for being so honest in your advertisement of this product. It arrived in a timely manner and in excellent condition. I would definitely do business with this seller again. Thank you!
I am very impressed with this book.I have been watching programs about Dr. Oz and was very interested in what he has said. The book is great. My husband and I tell family and friends about it all the time.
I bought the book to learn about how I can eat more healthfully and which foods are best for my body and the best vitamins and minerals for my body. I like learning how my various systems work, especially how to keep fat from taking over. Also, there are exercises in the book that are helpful to keep me fit.
This book, "You on a Diet" and "You the Owners Manual" together are two of the best books I have ever read that help me to understand the inner workings of my body. I have already adapted the diet, vitamins and starting the walking and exercises into my daily routines.
There isn't anything I didn't like about the book. I use the book as a reference book constantly. I love the illustrations that help with the understanding of the various systems of the body and the wittiness of the drawings.
The book is very informative, easy to read and understand. Many diagrams to visually understand the associated text. Basic, down to earth approach to understanding your body and how it functions. Practical solutions to issues with blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, colon, prostate, etc. I purchased it after reading many reviews listed on Amazon.com. I would recommend the book to those who do not have a vast knowledge about their own bodies and associated health issues.
I have always been interested in learning more about alternative methods to cure ailments that arise in the human body. This is the purpose for the purchase of this book. I have not read it as of this moment in time but look forward to it in the near future. It will become a permanent fixture to our book shelf for periodic review when needed.
Cleverly written. It tells you about things you need to know and your own doctor (or Mother) never mentioned. The illustrations are drawn to be remembered even if the hard words aren't. I bought it because I enjoyed You: On a Diet. I recommend both books.
This book was as described and has been very enlightening. It gives all the information that I had seen promoted on a talk show on television, therefore I have been happy with the purchase.
This is a great book written by the world renowned Dr.Oz, also known as Oprah's doctor. If you're looking for a health book that is not a text book this is a great book for you. The chapters are set up independently so that if you just want to brush up on one specific item you don't have to read through the entire book to understand what they are talking about. The authors have a way of bringing everything into a light that a 7 year old could understand. I originally checked the book out of a public library and decided I had to own it.
This book will walk you through how your body works and how different things affect it and cause various ailments. Best of all it covers the many things you can do to change heath issues you have and how to avoid others. A good over-all guide to to body and health.
I was thrilled to find this book at such a great price. I received it quickly and the book was in perfect condition. Since I'm in the process of moving out of state, I haven't had much time to sit down and go through it but I'm glad I found a great book at and a great buy! Thanks!
I purchased and read this book prior to You On a Diet. This is a wonderful book well written so the "lay" person could understand it. Very informative. I have tried the diet, and even not sticking 100% to it, I have lost 10 lbs and 2 inches off my waist in about 3 weeks. Imagine what I could do if I really hard nosed it and stuck to the diet!!! I have always been tiny. Upon pregnancy with my 3rd son, I weighed 104 lbs. 25 years later I weighed in at 229, with a myraid of health problems including sleep apnea. I am looking forward to losing some of this and being able to breath (and see my feet again). ha
This is a good book, skillfully written by intelligent authors with senses of humor. It is full of common sense techniques to improve your health with the long term in mind. The authors clearly describe how each part of your body works and then, once you understand how things are working, give you a few simple methods to improve the functioning of every part of your body from your lungs to your heart to your bones. Like any owners manual, this book is a better reference than a cover to cover read. Although the authors make it a fun read with comics and humor, it can become really dry really fast if you try to plow through the entire book in less than a week. Also, I found most of the strategies offered in the book were geared towards the aging generation and may not be as useful to younger readers looking to improve already good health or preventing future health problems. Overall, a good reference to keep in your home. You'll keep coming back to it over and over again and you'll find yourself healthier and happier as you apply the principles of the book.
Didn't realize this was an ebook. Eventually got the book and it is facinating! I am a substitute teacher and I took it along to quiz the students when I subbed for health classes. We all learned something!!
I never received this book; had to escalate it to a PayPal claim in order to get my money back. This seller is a fraud and PayPal's decision was to award me the money in full for what I paid. However, this seller closed their PayPal account so I am out all the money I spent for this item due to a fraudulant seller.
I loved reading this witty insightful book. It is a really useful "manual" for people who want to be knowledgeable about their "temple." It has good ideas to keep it healthy, clean and efficient. Funny, too.
