When you decide to find a copy of a film like "wag the Dog" years after its release, hit and miss is your chance of finding it. Wasted time combing through bargain bins and wasted gas, make this (e-bay) a no brainer.
What I wanted, at my door at a great price in less time than finding it on the open market.

  Wag the Dog

I liked the way the producer and press secretary scammed the CIA and everyone else. Brilliant thinking. I bought it to see how the sex scandal related to President Clinton and how starting a war turned the president's image/ratings around. Language was a little rough for me but was pretty appropriate for the characters. I wouldn't want my kids to see it,for example.

Wag The Dog - Funny, and Yet Not Funny
Review created: 05/04/07
by: AliventiAsylum-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
acting, dry sarcastic humor

Cons:
too close to the truth at times

When I come across a movie that manages to sarcastically poke at our reality, usually I find it quite funny. However, in a day and age where manipulation of the public by advertising agencies is so prevalent, I find it sad that people are so easily manipulated by slogans and jingoisms rather than facts. We are manipulated not only to buy the products they advertise, but also now to support various causes, platforms, or candidates. What s even worse is that when we find we have been lied to and manipulated by statements which are not true, the reaction seems to be either to shrug it off and...

Political Satire That Lost Its Umph Before Its Time
Review created: 04/21/00
by: DoubleCoog -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Excellent acting throughout

Cons:
The awesome parts add up to a good, but not great, whole

Art Imitating Life? Wag the Dog is a Political Satire adapted from the American Hero, a novel which theorizes that George Bush started the Gulf War to counteract the wimp image he was suffering from. The final screenplay, written by respected Playwright and Screenplay Writer David Mamet, hardly follows the original work at all; the president is clearly not Bush (the scandal was different, and the war was fictitious), nor was it supposed to be Clinton or any other president; in fact, the face of the president was never clearly shown. Unfortunately, just weeks after the film premiered, the...

  Public Imagery?
Review created: 04/11/00

Pros:
Insightful view of media manipulation...

Cons:
Didn't get enough box-office respect...

"Wag The Dog" is a fascinating look at the potential of the public relations industry within the political realm. Although the ethical approach went far beyond the pale of industry standards, the film gave us a chillingly accurate depiction of Machiavellian strategy at the upper echelons of government as well as the motivations of those controlling modern-day media. The client was depicted as the President of the United States and his White House staff. Drawing from the Lewinsky scandal and the ensuing Iraq smoke screen, the incumbent is said to have had sex with a Girl Scout-ish 'Firefly'...

Wag the Dog: Media Manipulation Times A Million
Review created: 10/01/00
by: serc -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
on target message about media and politics, funny script

Cons:
not hilarious

In honor of the upcoming election, I am writing about a movie with a political theme every week until the election occurs. This week I viewed Wag The Dog, an amusing and cynical movie about the media and politics - and how vulnerable we are to manipulation by the media. The movie begins with a serious dilemma facing an incumbent President facing re-election; a young girl is accusing him of sexual misconduct. He needs to find a way to not only distract the public, but to strengthen his standing in the polls. The solution comes when Conrad Brean (played by Robert DeNiro) suggests creating a...

If the President's a Dog, then don't sell his Tale
Review created: 09/24/00
by: mage67 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A subtle masterpiece ; Carefully written and well acted

Cons:
Bad title

All the action in this picture takes the form of non-stop dialogue. If you re looking for neat explosions or lots of gratuitous nude scenes, this is not the picture for you. But if you re looking for one of the funniest political satires out there, this one is almost sure to satisfy. The plot: The president has been caught alone in the same room with a little girl. There s only eleven days until election day. No one knows what actually happened, only that this scandal is going to break loose soon and possibly cost him the election, even though he s far ahead in the polls. The president calls..
