PJ Returns to rawness... in a different way!
Review created: 07/08/06

Well PJ hated popularity and fame as much as Nirvana did and they committed a sort of suicide themselves... by not making any more music like their first album and vowing to never make another music video! This is an album certainly for die hard fans. You might think if they're going to change their sound they might just put in some throw away lyrics - not so! They penned some of their greatest songs on this album. Songs "Not for you", "Tremor christ, "Nothing man", "Satan's bed", "Immortality", are some of the best. I wouldn't call the music on this album grunge though... probably neo-grunge is best!

Pearl Jam Puts Together Another Masterpiece
Review created: 12/14/04

Pros:
Everything but...

Cons:
...Bugs and Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me

When I first bought Vitalogy I couldn't even listen to it. That's how much of a problem I had with the album. Oh wait, did I mention that I actually bought the album and not the cd. For those that my have forgotten, Pearl Jam released Vitalogy two weeks early on vinyl. And, being the good fan boy, I bought it. Sure, I didn't own a turntable, but it didn't matter. I was a die-hard fan and in the immortal words of David Puddy, "Gotta support the band." Vitalogy was a crucial release for me. I loved Pearl Jam's debut, Ten. However, at the time, I was less than thrilled with their sophomore...

So good, even two trash songs couldn't slow it down

Pros:
Classic rock with a 1990s spin; some of the strongest tracks Pearl Jam recorded

Cons:
Two songs on the disc are indulgent garbage

I hate the generic "grunge" label. Why? Because it has caused fine albums like Pearl Jam's Vitalogy to be slapped in the same category as a lot of discs from bands full of folks who aren't even worthy of shining Eddie Vedder's shoes. In fact, sticking Pearl Jam in the "grunge" category is rather like saying the Beatles were just another band which came out of the 1960s and were no better or worse than the likes of the Monkees or the Turtles. So, forget about everything connected with the short-lived "grunge" movement when considering Vitalogy. This 1994 release is a rock n' roll album of the..

"make my Jam the P.Jam," act three

Pros:
a brilliant, dark masterpiece

Cons:
songs that only work in album's context - otherwise, none

Writing this review - or, more appropriately, _not_ writing it - has convinced me that Pearl Jam's Vitalogy may well be my favorite album from my favorite band. As a writer, and as any writer here will tell you, the inherent value of a solid opening line cannot be underrated. Opening lines are difficult - often the most difficult part of a review, tied with the title, body, and conclusion - but Vitalogy has presented me with a particularly puzzling stumbling block. For an hour and change now, I've been here at my computer, trying over and over again to compose a solid opening paragraph,...

"Caught a Bolt of Ligtning, Cursed The Day He Let It Go..."
Review created: 09/07/03
by: MattA75 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
raw, biting, and dark

Cons:
the experimental crap needs to go (ok, Bugs can stay)

When Pearl Jam hit it big in the summer of 1992 thanks to the never ending airplay of Jeremy from their debut album, Ten, the band didn't realize what was happening. This resulted in the band fighting what lead singer Eddie Vedder described as a kind of fight for the band's privacy. But any privacy the band gained back in the few months it took to record their second album, Vs., was lost when said album sold nearly a million copies in it's first week on store shelves. At this point the biggest band in the world, Pearl Jam struggled even more with their fame. They did things out of the box,...

  Spin This Black Circle

Pros:
The heavy, the soft, and the weird fit brilliantly

Cons:
May be hard to get into

Pearl Jam s Vitalogy may be hard to get into for some, but many who stick through it can appreciate it as one of the band s best and definitely their most interesting album to date. On one hand, the album contains a Grammy-winner and one of the band s biggest radio hits. On the other, it s a major change from its predecessors, marking a transition in the band s style. No longer would Pearl Jam be a mainstream powerhouse. Instead they would keep moving along, doing their own thing and caring more about their fans than about ticket agencies, bootleggers, or those who keep begging for Ten 2....
