I rented this book from a library and decided it is a must to have it. I read another books about exposure and digital photography - this is the best written book, easy to understand, and lots to learn about digital SLR cameras.

Insultingly basic, with lots of useless padding.

Don't waste your money.

Peterson spends the first 3/4 of the book finding various ways to tell you that exposure consists of shutter speed, ISO, and aperture setting. That's literally it.

Then he talks a bit about his wonderful professional career (not at all on topic) and there's some nonsense at the end that I just skimmed through. None of it addressed the fine points of exposure. Nothing on compensation, filter techniques, etc. NOTHING.

If you enjoy countless redundant analogies, all saying the same thing, buy this book! If you want to learn about the subtleties of exposure, lighting, composition, etc, get "Light Science and Magic."

Good examples, and simple language help explain the ins/outs of photography basics. Ebay wants 100 characters for a review, I think that is stupid....................................................................

I have looked everywhere to find a book that would help me understand about photography and the functions of the camera and I have found the right book very easy to understand and right to the point. You couldn't even learn this in a photography class.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan F Peterson

I saw this book at my sister-in-laws when I went home to visit for Christmas and loved it. I had to have it, so I could finish reading it. It has great helpful tips on lighting, how to take pictures, the aperture, and shutter speed, etc. I was having a hard time understanding how to set the aperture & shutter speed for the pictures I was taking. This finally made me understand what I should be doing and when. I would recommend this book to anyone getting into digital photography or just wanting to brush up on things. I feel there is something for everyone in this book. Great A+++ Debbie

  Understanding Exposure--easy to understand
Review created: 03/11/08

A very good guide for the budding photographer. Some aspects of photography could be explained better but I felt this was the perfect length for the book--not too much to digest. Several very do-able "assignments" throughout get you excited to get out there shooting. Also, the photographs used as examples are so good and appealing that they will inspire even the most neophyte photographer to greatness. Oh, and the author comes across as pretty cocky in his tone, but if you can get past that it's a useful resource. One minute detail--I wish it was not as large (almost coffee table sized)so I could tote it around more easily when I am taking pictures "on location" and want to reference something.

  An Absolute Must for Photographers!!
Review created: 01/10/08

This book is by far the MOST productive tool in furthering my knowledge of how exposure works. It is broken down into simple definitions, tips, methods, lessons, etc. to describe the WHOLE concept of exposure. I was definitely a beginner before reading this book and by the time I was halfway through I felt like I could take on some very advanced concepts. By the time I was done, I wanted to get all the toys necessary to go out and be an avid photographer.

This book also helped me in my current career as well. Because I am in the video production industry these concepts got carried over somewhat.

This is an absolute must for all photographers and videographers alike!!

  Book for all Photographers...

I was given the name of this book as a referral. I'm an avid photography lover. I love to shoot pictures of my children and family and friends. I wanted to learn more and I was having troubles with lighting on my pictures...being frustrated about my pictures being too dark and having to adjust them all the time. So she gave me the name of this book. It was an awesome suggestion and I know it will be helpful. I haven't had much time to read it throughly or apply it to my work but I have skimmed through and it seems to be a must have for all fellow photography lovers...old and new. Thanks!

This book is very well written especially for a novice or newcomer to the digital camera. I could understand everything the author was trying to relate to me. Not being too savvy in technology and other parts of photography I found the book well worth the money and time to read it. I can't say there was anything I disliked about the book. I decided to buy the book because I had viewed other books by other authors and had problems understanding what they were telling me. I would highly recommend this book for anyone.

Beautiful pictures and various examples makes this book a joy to read! Very well explained and lots of good tips and tricks. I know that lots of this info can be found through google, but it's all in bits and pieces (both good and bad bits and pieces). I'd recommend the investment in this book if you really are interested in getting more competent in photography... and hey if you've already shelled out all that money for a good camera (hopefully digital SLR), not learning how to use it to its max capability would be the TRUE financial waste!

I bought this book for a photography class I'm taking. This book is great. Being a newbie in the world of photography - I learned so much through this book. It breaks everything down perfectly. He gives you an example of a photo and tells you where to set your aperture and shutter speed. Great book and I highly recommend it!

A real Photographer told me I needed to get this book. I hated to spend more bucks. Lucky for me I sprang for it. All teachers/authors should write like this guy. Thinks of everything & has needed exposure descriptions next to his beautiful photos. Even the guy at the local photography shop never thought of analogies like this book.

After looking for advice on different photography forums for books to help a person start out in photography I purchased this book along with John Hedgecoe's Complete Guide to Photography , and between the two of them, I liked this book better as far as helping me to understand how to take better pictures, but the Hedgecoe book is going to help me put the information I learned in thsi book to the test.

As a first time SLR owner, and a rank amateur who has just started to grasp that there is more than just point and shoots, I would make the investment and buy both books.

Peterson really broke down and gave great examples on how just changing a setting by 2 stops, it could completely change the mood and impression of a photo, and he did it all in easy to understand language. After going to the library and looking at some other photography books, I'm glad this is the one I purchased and read first, I feel very well equipped with knowledge to start taking advantage of my camera, now it's just a matter of putting the knowledge to the test and using the information that I've learned to advantage.

I bought this book because a friend suggested it. I am so glad that I did. It defines terms like Aperture, shutter speed & ISO in a clear, easy to understand way. It has in-hand excersizes to do in the book to help you understand as you go. I would definately suggest this book, there are many topics in the book & can only help any beginner to intermediate photographer.

Bryan does an amazing job is describing the functions of cameras and how to be creative with it. I've been shooting for a few years, learning as I go, but I know I would have saved a LOT of time just reading this book. It has real life examples and with easy to read descriptions. In short... GET THIS BOOK!!
