I don't care how old Johnny gets, that voice never waviers for a single beat. He is flawless on this late 90's album as any he ever recorded. The man in black is simply a vocal genius. If you want to hear something really special get a copy of the My Mothers Hymnal cd. Recorded 2 years before he passed. Probably his best ever.

Do Not File Under Country.

Pros: Unchained is an instant classic. Cash shows at 70 he still has it.
Cons: I do not like the 2 religious songs on this album.
Johnny Cash Unchained 1996 I have been listening to the legendary Johnny Cash for over 35 years now. I have been listening to the same two Cash albums for about 15 years, Johnny Cash Greatest Hits Volume 1 (1969) and Hello I m Johnny Cash (1970), I have both on cassette tape. When I m in a tavern the first thing I do is walk to the jukebox and look for a Cash album. I have always loved his style. He does not play Country Music and he is not considered Rock and Roll. He is just Johnny Cash. He plays tough songs with a country sound, but he makes his own rules. He s the John Wayne of music. I...

A Tennessee Blancmange

Pros: Wonderful and impassioned covers mixed in with some blistering revivifications of Cash originals
Cons: Perhaps a tad formulaic towards the end, but no bad songs
I hear the blancmanges are magnificent in Tennessee. The womenfolk there use special ginseng and butter pans to mould exquisite specimens of blancmange beauty. I love a blancmange, as is evident to those who have read one of the four reviews I have penned thus far. For those who have not, I don t mind, but shall not be attending your bat mitzvahs. I would imagine this artist, Johnny R. Cash, has seen little in blancmange respite in his time as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He much preferred gravel butties or shrapnel pastries. In the 1980s Johnny Cash was about as.

Tips from a rock chick

Pros: every song on here
Cons: the CD eventually comes to an end
Let me begin by saying that country music just isn't my thing. However, I have always loved the man in black, and I love Rick Rubin for being bold enough to take him on. Cash has covered songs on this album by the likes of Beck, Soundgarden, and Tom Petty. You gotta give the man credit for being creative. Rowboat has classic country song elements, without being redneck and lame. Kneeling drunkard's plea reminds me of how I heard country music as a child. I always thought you had to be drunk to appreciate it. I am not drunk right now, by the way. No, I honestly like the songs on this album,...

Pros: The Man in Black is STILL THE KING!
Cons: n/a
This album is the second of three (so far) albums that the legendary Johnny Cash has recorded for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label. The first album consisted of Johnny and a guitar in Rick Rubin's living room, along with an assortment of Rubin's vintage recording equipment and not much else. This time around, Johnny is backed in the studio by several guest musicians, most notably Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, for 14 songs that span the entire musical map, all done with that gravelly Johnny Cash sincerity that just doesn't seem to exist anymore. First, we have Johnny singing a...
