  Hooked

I remember sitting in class reading from our textbooks when I saw that a girl had placed another novel inside her text and was reading that instead. It was a pretty good sized novel, and I became instantly curious what book had her hooked. I leaned over to see if I could read the title. She noticed at once. She smiled and hastily scribbled the title and author of the book down on a piece of paper and handed it to me.
Without even knowing what the book was about, I made my next stop the library. I found the book and flipped it over to read the summary. I was disappointed to learn that it was about vampires. I was not into this mumbo jumbo...For some reason, I checked it out anyway, and I have to say that IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I EVER DID! I have read the two sequels to Twilight, and anxiously await "Breaking Dawn" as well as the full-length featured film!

Stephenie Meyer is one of the many people who happen to have written a book; c'mon, who hasn't? Meyer, however, stands out in her own litle world very much like J.K. Rowling with her Harry Potter series, and as you read on in this, you'll see why. (If you see 'SPOILER' written anywhere, don't read if you don't want to hear parts of the book that haven't already been mentioned in reviews online.)

The book Twilight, the story jumps right into the tale of Bella Swan, formally known as Isabella Swan, a girl who has divorced parents, and is off from her sunny Jacksonville home in Florida to live with her father in Forks, Washington, where as she puts it, 'the rain never stops'. The dreary agreement to move in with her father was due to the fact that Bella did not want to strain her mother's new marriage to her new husband, who was trying to kick off his basketball career.

Bella, like any person moving to another place and attending a new school, starts off like and normal real person would; she meets people, drives to school, and like every girl, catches the sight of the cutest boy in school, Edward Cullen. Everyone tells Bella the same tale; they know little to nothing about dear Edward, except that he never comes to school on sunny days. Oh- that, and he's deathly beautiful.

Bella, determined to figure out what exactly Edward is, litterally places her neck on the line and avoids death one too many times in Forks, where she is known mostly as a 'danger magnet'. Her father, the police chief, keeps an eye on his high school daughter quite frequently. Eventually it gets to a point where you'll catch on that these two are the today fantasy version of Romeo and Juliet...without the deadly ending. For now.

-SPOILER-

As Bella follows along after Edward, their relationship grows more closer, more intimate, until Edward cannot keep himself away from Bella and says, "I'm tired of trying to stay away from you."

-END OF SPOILER-

The best part of this book was that it was so real, you had to wonder frequently if it really was real. Forks is an actual place in Washington, as so is Jacksonville. The line between real and fake in the book it so murky you don't care- you just want to read more and pray it never ends.

But dont't worry, the sequel, New Moon, gets better too.

  The BEST Series Ever
Review created: 08/20/08
by:

I had heard about and seen this book so much that I had to read it eventhough I thought it was geared toward teens. I can't tell you how amazing this story is, indeed the whole series. This book is for anyone who loves the vampire/romance genre. There is no gratuitous sex or gore, just a sweet love story between two old souls. The main characters Isabella, the klutzy "accident waiting for a happening" heroine and Edward, the gorgeous and romantic vampire, are so well drawn they draw you into their lives unforgettably. The story is full of low key humor and absolutely poignant. A breathtaking book. Highly, Highly recommended.

  Better than Harry Potter.

I highly recommend every woman to read this book. I am 44 years old. I started the book today on the 8/19/08 and I am half way through reading it. I draws you into this girl Bella's life. It brings back memories of when I was in high school and my crushes (no vampires, but still the same feelings).

Twlight -first book of 4 book series
Review created: 08/19/08

This is such a great book - I haven't read a book for pleasure in over 10 years - and couldn't put this one and the other 2 down. I finished the first 3 in 7 days! Since I was borrowing this book from a friend, I wanted to get my own copy so I could read it again!

I was sucked in with my daughter....Now we're HOOKED!!!
Review created: 08/15/08

I was sucked into this series with my teenage daughter, and even half of the adults I know. I started reading Twilight after my daughter pestered me endlessly, and within two days I had to borrow "New Moon" from her. From there it took me only 3-4 days, and I had to borrow "Eclipse" from a friend from work. Let me just tell you that I finished the third book in about two days, about two weeks before the sale of "Breaking Dawn", and that two weeks was just tormenting!!! This is the best fiction series I have ever read, and now niether one of us want it to end. It would be awesome if they continued on with the story somehow. Even though it seems to be geared more towards the younger generation I highly recomend these books to anyone that enjoys a good story no matter their age!!

WAY Better Than I Was Expecting & Not Just For Teens
Review created: 08/07/08

I bought "Twilight" because when the t-shrits came out they sold out in a day and I was wondering what all the hype was about. I knew it was a movie coming out, but I had no idea it was first a series of books. So like always when I am curious I jumped right in.

I bought "Twilight" and less than 30 hours later (I did have to work LOL) I had finished. The entire time my nose was pressed into the book I had a smile on my face and sometimes I laughed out loud at the romantic tension and casual bantering between the main characters Edward Cullen (a "vegitarian" vampire) and Bella Swan (a girl wise beyond her years who takes care of her father). Although the books are geared to a younger "high school" audience the romance between the characters is all VERY clean. When she realizes what he and his "family" are, although she doesn't fear him in the least, her life is suddenly in danger from a pack of nomad vampires.

For parents I'd like to note although it is in its sence a "romance" it is I think, well written and not at all vulgur ("above the neck romance" I heard it described in an article). It is also good to realise that it is books like this series and the Harry Potter series that have gotten teens once again interested in reading which I think makes them noteworthy in themselves.

Amazing Teen Fiction for Adults, too!
Review created: 08/06/08
by:

We bought this book for a mother-daughter book club, and both myself and my daughter (age 13) read this book. I read it in two days, and my daughter (who hates reading books) read it in about four days. She's now on to the second book in this series, and I can't believe that she's actually reading without being forced to!!

The characters are very likable, and very easy to believe (despite the impossible premise of a teenage vampire boy and a human girl falling in love.) I think that girls enjoy reading about the amazing life of just an "average" high school girl, and moms might enjoy remembering their high school days, and/or their "first love."

We have recommended this book to all of our friends (girls and moms alike.) It's addicting reading, and you won't be able to put it down! Edward (the vampire boy) is, possibly, the dreamiest young man in literature! You won't be able to resist him ... or the Twilight series! Beware!

  YA vampire novel
Review created: 08/03/08
by:

This novel is in the process of a Hollywood interpretation, and it's easy to see why after having read it.
This book will appeal to a large audience of teenage females (and males) looking for a romantic read involving a girl's relationship with a teenage vampire.

As an adult, I have to say the book held my interest and was an easy, quick read despite it's lengthy appearance. The characterization of Bella held true (I am a high school teacher and felt she was an accurate depiction of teen age girls), and Edward was interesting and did gain this reader's sympathy.

If you liked the Anne Rice vampire series, you may not find these novels are as "deep" as her books, but still a fun read and a quick "easy' read.

This was given to me as a gift, and franky sat on the shelf for half a year before it even crossed my mind. It wasn't until I started seeing tons of internet drama over this book that I had any interest in reading it.

It's true--the characters are weak and the genre cliche. Despite that, I could not stop reading it. It was the kind of book I would have REALLY been into when I was a teenager, so I think that is what made it more enjoyable for me.

Don't take it seriously and enjoy!

  Have a Bite
Review created: 07/29/08(updated 07/29/08)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I saw this book on the shelves of Borders and it drew my attention, but I didn't get it right away. I came back on many occasions to buy other books and kept seeing it, so I eventually picked it up and read the back and decided to give it a try despite my starting to grow out of Young Adult Fiction at time.

Well, after reading the first few pages, I was HOOKED into the book. I think what's so good about this book is that Meyer has the magical ability to draw us into the world of the protagonist and offer us the romance that every girl dreams of. The sensuality is better than all those novels out there about sex and one night stands. It's too fleeting. We like the moderate servings of romance and sensuality offered between interesting thoughts of the main character and some nice action. It's great.

Now, the thing that slightly irks me is the overuse of certain words, one of which that is stamped upon my memory is "grimace." The other thing is, we never really got to see why Edward fell in love with Bella. It's a bit unclear and I also get the impression that Bella only loves him for his ridiculously good looks (reading this book has given me false expectations of guys in real life). Maybe Meyer could have expanded that a little more. Otherwise, this is a great book and it should be read...I mean it MUST be read! So go on, take a bite!

  It was a'right
Review created: 07/28/08

Twilight is a teen romance novel about a young girl named Bella and her love of a teen vampire named Edward. When Bella moves to Forks to live with her dad, she is doing her immature mother a favor or so she thinks. Unfortunately her dad, "Charlie" is just as clueless as mom in the parenting department. When Bella meets an intriguing boy at school, she swiftly falls head over heels for him only to discover :gasp: that Edward is a vampire.

I found the vampire ecology of Meyer's world intriguing. I liked Edward and his family. I found Jacob (the secondary love interest) kind of bland. Bella and her parents annoyed me. Her mother is a very selfish person who thinks more of her new hubby than her own daughter. Her immaturity grated this reader. I found Charlie slightly better, but felt he should've been more of a parent to Bella and less of a 'roommate'. He is seldom around and lets Bella do many things on her own. Bella herself was agonizingly bland at times. I think she fell for Edward too quickly and then the story sort of went nowhere. There is only so much you can take of: Bella lurves Edward, Edward lurves Bella... but that's pretty much the middle section of the book. The book picks up towards the end, but overall I was left with an unsatisfied feeling. Bella's character alternates between a codepenant love for Edward and feelings of inadequacy. "why me?"

Nits: I felt the characters didn't act particularly like teenagers. Bella acted like a grown woman most of the time. I disliked her calling her father by his first name, and how she pretty much played housewife for him, cooking, cleaning, etc. The girl is a teenager. Dad is a grown man. He can learn to cook. I kind of wish Edward had been turned at a later age. To be perpetually 17 must be kind of tough to pull off as your girlfriend ages.

Overall OK characterization in the vampire department, but a bit thin plotwise for this reader.

  AMAZING BOOK!
Review created: 07/27/08

I absolutely loved this book and when I was done reading it I quickly started the second one. At the end of every chapter you are left wanting to know what happens next. Their are so many twists and turns in the story; you never know what to expect next. I stayed up all night one night just to finish the book because I could not stop reading it! I would highly reccommend this book as long as the others in the series to any young adult wanting to read something new. The thing I loved most about the book is how realistic it was. Its interesting to think that a vampire family could be living down the street! Anyway! READ THIS BOOK! ITS SO GOOD!

Twilight- the beginning of an epic series
Review created: 07/25/08

I heard about these books from several of my friends. They insisted that the series was just as addictive as the Harry Potter series. In short, I was very skeptical of this. So I bought the book--- and wow!! I just finished Eclipse (the third book in the series) and I am just as invovled with these characters as I was with HP. Edward Cullen will win any girls heart and the fight scenes are enough to make thebooks equally enjoyable for any guy!!! Please read this series! You will not regret it!!!!!

Fantastic and Touching story about a teenage girl

Oh my gosh, this book and the rest of the series are SO amazing. I am so glad i took my friends advice to read it. As soon as i stuck my nose into the first book i was hooked. The affect of these books are so incredible you almost wish they were real. From a teenagers prespective this book, along with the others are very easy to relate to. If there was a sad part in the book i would cry, if there was a funny part in the book it would make me laugh. I don't know how Stephenie Meyer writes like she does but i hope that she continues to write amazing books and fast. I was so amazingly hooked to her novels Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse that i read each one within the time spand of a day if that ( obviously i didn't really do anything else besides read for three days ...lol) Anyways so to all the people out there that read this review of her novels i hope you run to the store and buy and read all her books, or continue to read them if you've already started. I felt that i really, trully enjoyed reading the books Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse written by the wonderful Stephenie Meyer. She has an impecable imagination that it makes me wish that i lived in the world of her books. Best of Luck on the next books she writes, they'll be a blast for me and all her fans to read.
