Poor because I wasn't able to watch it on my system, even though I CAN watch other movies in VHS format! Originally bought it as a special gift for my husband.

  B-17s over Europe

1994 issue in a NTSC VHS format. Romanticized ideas intermixed with stark realism makes this a unique movie about WWII air warfare over Europe. Many of the actors were veterans of WWII which adds to this movies credibility. Outstanding actual air warfare footage is used which historians and militaria collectors appreciate. Probably one of the best films on this topic available. Definately belongs in a video collection. I'd suggest that adults review the film before allowing their small children to see it but I personally don't see a problem, it's just directed toward an adult audience. It's interesting, now that I live in Germany, to see the targets mentioned in this movie and the absolute devastation created by these raids in spite of heavy ground and air defences.

US Eighth Air Force: Twelve O'clock High
Review created: 09/25/07

Pros:
Ensemble cast, Gregory Peck, examples of command

Cons:
Image should be restored

Twelve O'clock High (1949) Twelve O'clock High is a great character study showing the toll leadership takes on the successive commanders of a bomber group in WWII. After Americans get involved in the bombing of Germany from air bases in England, the US 918th Bomber Group has huge casualties, sinking morale, and a commanding officer (Gary Merrill) who is too close to his men, starting to crack under the pressure of sending men to their deaths every morning after roll call. Our doorway into this strange world is Group Executive Officer Major Stovall portrayed by Dean Jagger, who won a best...

Once You've Accept That You're Already Dead, FEAR is Not an Issue

Pros:
The cast, acting, script and actual aerial combat footage.

Cons:
None that I noted.

General Savage; [addressing the bomber squadron] We're in a war, a shooting war. We've got to fight, and some of us will die. Directed by Henry King (The Old Man and The Sea - 1958) Gregory Peck as Brigadier General Savage, Frank Twelve O Clock High 1949 The Story Twelve O Clock High is set in the early years of World War II in the skies over Europe. While the U.S. Marines, a majority of the Navy and various U.S. Army units were engaged in the Pacific theater, the U.S. Army Air Corps were brutally engaged in the skies of Europe. More specifically, U.S. Bomber squadrons. The 918th Bomber...

TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH: How Much Can You Take Before You CRACK From Your Stress?
Review created: 03/03/02

Pros:
Peck's Peak.

Cons:
A cigarette in almost every scene.

TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH is, on the surface, a war movie. It is a movie that was released in 1949 starring Gregory Peck, Dean Jagger, and Hugh Marlowe. But the heart of this movie isn't about war at all: it is a psychological study of leadership under pressure. It should be required viewing for any class teaching the fundamentals of leadership. I love any movie that is about World War II involving airplanes. This movie is set in wartime England in 1942. Actually, the start of the movie is in 1949, after the war is over, but most of the action of the film takes place back in 1942, at an airfield...

"12 O' Clock High": Where The Lessons of War and Leadership Intersect
Review created: 03/23/01
by: NFP -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Authentic and stark WWII drama with multilevel applications to psychology and organizational leadership.

Cons:
None

THE LESSON: There is a scene in the highly-acclaimed and offbeat 1949 World War II film 12 O Clock High in which Army Air Corps Major General Frank Savage (Gregory Peck) harangues the makeshift crew of a B-17 re-named "The Leper Colony," where all the washouts of The Mighty Eighth have been placed: We ve got to fight and some of us have got to die. I m not telling you not to be afraid. Fear is normal. But stop worrying about it, and about yourselves. Stop making plans. Forget about going home. Consider yourselves dead. Once you accept that idea, it won t be so tough. Tough stuff from a tough.

Pros:
Excellent acting, fine screenplay

Cons:
Is not a standard-issue action flick

One of the grimmest realities of World War II is the fact that limits of 1940s aviation technology and an almost reckless adherence to bad or ineffective tactics really hampered the Allied air forces' strategic campaign against Germany and failed to fulfill American and British bomber commanders' hopes that strategic bombing alone could have brought the Third Reich down without a massive invasion of the European continent. Most modern historians, including the late Stephen E. Ambrose, admit that the Combined Bombing Offensive carried out by Britain's Bomber Command and the American Strategic..
