Tracy Chapman - CD 1988, Greatest CD Ever
Review created: 03/06/08

This album came out of leftfield in 1988... no one knew who this Tracy Chapman was, but we all heard Fast Car on the radio and thought, let's take a listen... every song on the album is harder hitting than Fast Car and you're left crying and replaying it again and again.

It holds up great over the past 2 decades and I recently purchased the CD version of it.

Utterly amazing.

I like her style of singing about real life situations in urban city life. The music is expressed with a lot from the heart.

This CD was excellent. Of course, more so when it first came out in 1998 - as Tracy's style has since been copied. There are some soul searching hits on this album. It's a thought provoking collection. Tracks include:
1. Talkin' Bout A Revolution
2. Fast Car
3. Across The Lines
4. Behind The Wall
5. Baby Can I Hold You
6. Mountains O' Things
7. She's Got Her Ticket
8. Why?
9. For My Lover
10. If Not Now
11. For You

Tracy Chapman's Debut - A Gem in an Eighties Wasteland
Review created: 04/28/07
by: floatingcity-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Music

Pros:
Excellent storytelling, vocals and guitar playing.

Cons:
A bit too homogenous-sounding in places.

Having been on a recent mission to sort out the piles of records I seem to have amassed, I came across a copy of Tracy Chapman s self-titled debut album sneakily hiding away. Now that I ve been able to get reacquainted with it, I can say I m very happy to have found the elusive disc it s a great example of late-eighties songwriting, and how genuine and heartfelt music could still get released in an environment dominated by synthesisers and cheap gimmicks. Musically, Tracy Chapman plants itself in ground between the singer-songwriter and folk genres. Tracy s acoustic guitar forms the...

Starting From Zero Got Nothing To Lose
Review created: 10/20/01
by: katmar -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Voice like melted chocolate, thought-provoking songs, insightful lyrics

Cons:
A lot of white people won't get some of it.

I don't remember where I was when JFK got shot, I was an infant. I don't remember where I was when we landed on the moon, I wasn't alive when Pearl Harbor was attacked, and although I do remember President Reagan getting shot at, I can't tell you what I was doing at the time. I do however, remember what I was doing when I heard Fast Car, Tracy Chapman's breakthrough single, from her self-titled debut of 1988. I was sitting in my living room, talking to my mother. The TV was tuned to MTV, as I was very into it then, and always wanted to catch some of my favorites whenever I could. During a...

  Let Tracy Sing to You.
Review created: 08/17/02
by: fartzarellah -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Naturally beautiful!

Cons:
Could do without the make-up.

A few of my thoughts when "Fast Car" became a hit: 1. Is this a man or a woman? 2. I like this song! All my friends do as well! And all we ever listen to is Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi, and all those other awesome guys with cool hair! Looking back now, I believe those memories speak volumes about what is so good about Tracy Chapman's music. Her songs cross racial, social, and gender lines. Hardly any of her lyrics openly refer to the fact that she's a she, and her voice doesn't give it away either. Anyone can sing along and feel the music is really about them. She also addresses important...

Pros:
Unique voice, song writing, and musical talent.

Cons:
Waiting for the next release

If you like Passionate music with that soulful sound You will love Tracy Chapman Preface ************************************* I first heard of Tracy Chapman in the late eighties when I was in High School when Fast Car was being played all over the radio, I adopted this song as my theme song later on when I realized that I was living it. I bought the tape back then and listened to it over and over again. Tracy is an artist that I can never get tired of listening to. Her songs are all passionate and are centered around issues that we face as a society. ************************************* The.

  Why NOT Now???
Review created: 08/06/00
by: sibhreach -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Chapman's beautiful and emotional voice, soft and soothing music, great lyrics with true meaning

Cons:
somewhat depressing and not something you'd want to listen to "get you started"

Opening with her beautiful and folksy guitar playing, Tracy Chapman is one of those performers you could readily see occupying a smoky, corner bar, in some little town...if she wasn't as well-known as she is! Her first, self-titled album, reminds me of the 80's and all that social-consciousness the musicians had, a little over 12 years ago. She has a blues-folk music sound and that is most evident in the song that started it all for her, Fast Car. This collection of songs is soft and emotion-filled - her messages of revolution, domestic abuse, escaping a hard life and wanting the good life...
