Toshiba SD-KP19 Portable DVD Player

I was on the lookup for an affordable portable player to view DivX videos for some time now. Just got this beauty recently and have been tickled pink ever since. I can now watch all my favs on the road.

Sound and playback quality are very good and like the fact that there are 2 headphone jacks and also a video out line to what I suppose is to link a second screen.

The remote is kind of cool I guess but don't see the need for one when you are not usually more then an arms length away from the unit. Also, the controls on the unit are quite easy to navigate through the various menus.

I tried viewing JPGs but can't figure out how to view them so they look normal and not distorted, and yes, I did change the seeting from 16:9 to 4:3.

The unit does seem a little loud when the discs are spinning.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the player.

Simply put the newer generation of portable DVD players are far more refined in their screen qualities.....if you stick to a good high-end name brand like Toshiba , Lg...etc... you will be far happpier with your viewing experience. YOU get what you pay for in portable DVD players...its that simple. And this Toshiba SD-KP19 is excellent and well deserving of purchasing in all aspects of Sound and Picture quality and options. It blows my older Axion player out of the water and it is only two years older than this one and that was a really great player for its day.... this Toshiba is just really more refined.

Before buying this player I looked at several buyer reviews of other players. Since this is all I did before and after buying this player, the perspective of the following comments is limited.

An inadequate volume level is a comment I have seen made about several players. That is not an issue with this player although I give the quality of its speakers a C+. With headphones the sound quality is excellent.

The picture quality of this player does not come close to what I have seen on HD flat panel screen TVs displayed in retail outlets. The eight inch screen of this player has a resolution of 480x234. For a portable unit, to me, the quality of the picture looks very good.

Battery life on this player will vary based upon whether you are buying a used, refurbished or new player. A new player has a four hour rating. The refurbished unit I purchased will play DVD discs for a little over 3 hours.

What I found rather surprising was the lack of information regarding the advantage of having a slot utilizing a flash memory card. What I learned by experimentation and very limited knowledge follows.

The battery life using a SD card was a little over 5.5 hours. You would think the manual would have pointed the extended battery life using a SD card would give, it did not.

It appears a 2GB is the largest SD card this player will read. I know for sure it will not read a 4GB HC SD card. Nor will my camera accept such a card but every card reader I have will both read and write to such a card. Is there a 4GB non HC SD card available?

Using a PC-TV card and Beyond TV (BTS) software is the only method I have used to record files for SD card playback. BTS will only record DivX in SSX format which this player will not read. However BTS will convert the recorded files into a DivX AVI format which the player will read.

The files can be either recorded directly or copied directly to the SD card from the hard disc after the recording and conversion has been completed. It takes about 8.5 minutes to copy 2GB of files from the hard disc to a standard speed SanDisk memory card.

BTS offers several recording quality options. Portable High (128kps) and Home Theater Low(224kps) are the only ones I have tried. For some reason the MB/Hour has not corresponded with the bit rate of recording, 355 versus 380 MB/Hour file size for the 128kps and 224kps bit rate, respectively. With either option you are going to get about 5 hours of recording on a 2GB SD card. The quality option of the recordings played back on this player using 224kps has been close to DVD playback quality. Using 128kps the picture is a little snowy and a bit out of focus at times (Fair to Poor).

The player will resume playback from the previous spot when stopped; however, this feature is lost if the power is shutoff. The maximum fast forward speed of 16x provides a stuttering string of pictures that is easy to follow.

The buttons on the player, when pushed, have a click that can be easily felt. Overall the construction of the player has a solid feel to it.

Summing it up, I wanted a durable player having a long battery life, and good picture. So far this player has measured up to those needs quite well.

Bought this for my 6 year old son.
It's easy to use, durable, and provides excellent audio/video.
My son takes it everywhere. Great on family road trips.

The only downside I can think of is, it requires frequent charging.
The battery only lasts for about 1 hour.
Given the multiple charging methods, We can live with this.

TOSHIBA PRODUCES A GREAT PICTURE, GREAT SIZE, EASY TO TAKE IT WITH US, BUT BIG ENOUGH TO ENJOY A MOVIE. THE WEIGHT IS REASONABLE TOO. GREAT GIFT. NO PROBLEMS USING IT. VERY EASY TO USE.

this unit comes with everything you will need to enjoy its convenience.12 volt power plug,120 volt power plug battery with charger,stereo headphones,its all there.unpack and use.the kids love it.

Strengths: 8" screen, good stereo sound, camera memory card slots, 2 headphone jacks
Weaknesses: JPEG photo images are fuzzy, maneuvering through JPEGs is a bit cumbersome
Summary: I purchased this unit to take to a family reunion last summer. It performed great on DVDs. The picture and sound are outstanding. The battery is listed at 4 hours and actually lasted nearly that long. As I mentioned above, I was a bit disappointed when viewing JPEGs either from a camera card or a DVD. Overall a good purchase for the price. Seems well made and comes with all necessary accessories.

Purchased it mainly for use in a vehicle. Those w/me can listen to their favorite items, or view them. Wish I would have purchased the 10". The 8" is a bit small but it does the job. I also wish it had two sets of ear phones instead of one but when you haven`t had one before, you learn to late. But overall, the family likes it. It was a good purchase.

I puchased this product knowing that it had been 'factory refurbished' to save some money. The price was great. The company was quick and punctual with delivery. The DVD Player arrived in good condition with all of the advertized components. I sent it to my wife, who is in the military and stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. She experienced some problems with the player. In movie mode, it will freeze about 15 minutes into any given DVD. You can get around this by using the 'chapter search' but this is inconvinient. This may have been correctable by puchasing an additional warranty policy. The drawback there is all of the shipping back and forth and the timeline of having the product available for my wife. Over all, it isn't a total loss, and it does do some things well.

I like how easy it is to use, Also picture quality is great . I bought it because the price was right. It is very compact and easy to carry on airplanes.

I bought this item as a birthday gift for my sister and, she has been very
happy with it. I have one myself and it's been working great since I got it.

Really kept the kids occupied on a car trip which is what it was purchased for. The two headphone jacks and pairs of headphones were an ear-saver for the adult passengers.

Works great. We bought it for our 12 yr old for when we travel and it works out wonderful. Good picture, good sound. No complaints.

I bought this item to keep my grandaughter occupied during the drive to a recent vacation. Not only did it work flawlessly in that function but we used it at the resort to watch DVD's on our room TV during inclement weather. It was so simple to use that my 6 year old grandaughter operated it with no problem after I showed her once how it worked. This was a very worthwhile purchase,

When I was contemplating a trip by bus to see my grandchildren, I knew that I would be bored just sitting. Having made the trip many times by car, I didn't know if I would see anything else that I had not already seen. I, of course, love to read, but also knew that I might want more. I borrowed a friend's DVD player, took a few movies, and was hooked. And not only was I able to view movies, but I could listen to cd's and view the pictures I took with my digital camera. Seeing this Toshiba come up for sale on EBAY, I knew I had to buy it because I'm planning more trips, both by plane, car and bus! It's light, easy to use, the headphones are comfortable...everything you could ask for when traveling! The spinning of the cd's is a little noisy, but I would highly recommend it to anyone!

I like the picture quality and the sound. However if you wear a headset the sound is so much better. But even the sound without the head is very good. Hooking up the unit is very easy. In general I found nothing wrong with this DVD player. Excellent product.

I LOVE it, i use it for my daughter everyday!!!! IT is in excellant condition :) The only thing that i don't like sometimes is it doesn't have a battery pack so I have to keep it plugged into the wall, but for now its okie till i can get a converter for my car :) I bought it bc i needed something to use for my daughter when i don't want to watch her movies...LOL... Now she can enjoy her movies, while i watch my tv :) Thank you sooooo much I just REALLY LOVE it :)

We really love the Player! It was perfect for our grandchildren's long drive to our home (11 hours). With the 2 earphones they each could listen together or alone.

The only suggestion we have; is to have a longer cigarette lighter charger, it just reached our lighter.

I love my portable DVD player, it is excellent, the best buy. Nice resolution, nice size, battery running time, just great!!! I have insomnia problems and I could watch my movies ll night long without any complains by my husband.

Bought it because of the brand name & 8" size. Very nice unit for the grandkids when some want to watch something on TV & some want to watch a DVD. Am not disappointed thus far.
