I am impressed how Native Americans are spiritual and see truths in all forms.
This film is an example of the struggle on the "Red Road". Their sacrifices in life remands constant. Their beliefs are strong, even if it means a "no win" situation. Graham Green's portrait of the "Rez" Cop is unshaken. Val Kilmer as the D.C. FBI man, experiences spirituality for the first time and acts on his instincts to remain truthful to himself and to the Natives.
Watch this movie several times to grasp all of the meanings the "Medicine Man" reveals in this film.

  Disappointed in product.

The DVD "Thunderheart" that I ordered (from the picture of the case on ebay) was NOT the Thunderheart that I received. I wanted FULL SCREEN and the DVD that I received was WIDE SCREEN. My husband previously had the Full screen DVD but it broke when he was taking it out of the case. So that is why I ordered it on ebay, and compared the pictures of the DVD cases. However, when it was sent to me it was the "other" picture on the cover and it was WIDE SCREEN. I was disappointed that the product I ordered was NOT the product I received.

  Movies That Speak to you
Review created: 08/07/07

I saw this movie a long time ago and I really enjoyed it so I felt I had to add it to my home movie library. Val Kilmer is excellent in this movie and this movie seems to ring some truth to it even though our law inforcement intities are much respected and needed, this movies expresses the fact that there are bad and good people in all areas of society.

This is almost a cult movie with Kilmer and Greene. Some great one-liners and filmed in the remote parts of Dakota on the Indian Reservations. Very interesting balance bewteen the white man and the american indians to inlcude all the meanings for FBI. Very enjoyable movie and very hard to find at discount stores or discount prices. Very available on ebay.

Based on the story of Leonard Peltier

Thunderheart writen by Michael Apted, is loosely based on the true story of Leonard Peltier. The film was released just weeks after Apted's documentary INCIDENT AT OGLALA, which examines the unjust imprisonment of Indian activist Leonard Peltier. Together the two films form a powerful plea for recognition of the mistreatment of Native Americans.

Thunderheart
Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer) a part Sioux FBI Agent who is sent to an Indian Reserve in South Dakota to assist in a homicide investigation. Directed by Apted. Produced by Robert De Niro.

A thrilling movie, that helps to remind us to not forget Leonard Peltier.

Thunderheart is a factual movie based on indian affairs that is not only informative, but also has a wonderful plot that keeps you watching. There is action, suspense and great history to this movie. The actors do any excellent job portraying their characters. There aren't many movies to compare to the likes of Thunderheart.

The movie was a gift for my brother for Christmas. My mother's relatives come from Cherokee decent, and I think that is why he likes this movie so much, besides the fact that he's a police officer himself.

Thunderheart steals my heart all over again...

I decide to buy "Thunderheart" on DVD because I just got a portable DVD player. I love the "Thunderheart" movie, it just talks to me! The thrill, scenery, and actors such as Graham Greene makes me watch this movie over and over again. Five stars just doesn't do the movie justice, it the heart and soul that does!

I have this movie on VHS and wanted to update my collection to DVD. Great suspense and action story based on a compilation of true stories that happend on Indian Reservations during the 70's & 80's. Well written and directed. Great humor breaks the tension filled storyline about a FBI agent sent to the badlands to investigate a string of murders on indian land. Val Kilmer and Sam Shepherd play the FBI team competing with Tribal Cop,Sidney Crowhorse (Greene) for who can find the truth first. Meanwhile Val Kilmer's character is set on a journey of inner exploration to find that part of himself inherited from his Sioux father. A connection with this group of strangers triggers a spiritual calling that ends with his finding courage, even he didn't know he had. Great supporting roles by Shiela Tousey and Chief Ted Thin Elk. Ledgendary Native activist, muscian, and writer John Trudell, also plays an important role.

one of my all-time favorites. the story is an amalgam of actual happenings on the pine ridge reservation in the 1970's, changed a bit and put into story form. robert redford did a documentary at the time called incident at ogalala that portrayed the actual happenings in a factual format. worth watching both.
i bought this dvd to replace my vhs copy

Well of course the best part of the movie is that Val Kilmer is starring in it. He is awesome I think all of his movies are great. Also a very well written script. Again Val Kilmer doesn't let you down he plays the part as if it is real life for him as he does in all of his movies. This is a must see especially if you are a Kilmer fan.

Typical cop buddy flick in a not-so-typical setting
Review created: 01/24/08
by: Chad9976 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Original location and premise for the story.

Cons:
Cliche; predictable; not very dramatic nor exciting.

For all it has going for it, "Thunderheart" certainly is a disappointment. It's a film with a serious attitude that tries with complete logic, to mix too many genres together to tell a simple story. Thus it gets tied up in knots and sinks under its own weight. Val Kilmer stars as Ray Levoi, a young FBI agent who has been assigned to investigate a murder on an Indian reservation in the badlands of South Dakota. The homicide supposedly has ties to an Indian militia group the Aboriginals' Resistance Movement. We also learn Ray has Native American ancestry but he doesn t know nor care much about..

Thunderheart - This Land Is Not For Sale! American Indians Stand Against Corruption.
Review created: 11/14/01
by: shaithis -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Kilmer, Greene, great showcase of racial stereoypes and it's causes.

Cons:
Murder mystery main story subpar.

About ten years ago, I had decided to place myself on a quest. That quest was to see all of Val Kilmer's films (it ended when he turned 'very' Hollywood in Batman). One of the films I enjoyed was a little known film to me called Thunderheart. Thunderheart is the story of Ray Levoi (Kilmer), a part Sioux FBI agent that is dispatched to investigate problems arising at an Indian reserve. Levoi is a man who has disassociated himself with his Sioux background. He is like many 'urbanized' part natives, embarrassed about his race, his family, and doesn't understand their traditions. This film was a..

Really too good for its own good -- true!
Review created: 02/03/03
by: isinga -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Val Kilmer, Sam Shephard, Graham Greene, Michael Apted, etc...

Cons:
Aches with reality pains....

The second time Thunderheart hit the screen it wasn't called Thunderheart, and was a documentary rather than a fictionalized version of a real happening. The original documentary release, also by Director Michael Apted, was the critically well-received Incident At Oglala which allowed Indian activist Leonard Peltier to describe the happenings on the Sioux Reservation in 1972. Those happenings, as also told in Thunderheart, involved the killings of several Sioux and the eventual killing of two FBI Agents who were investigating. Peltier was convicted of murder in the case but, as shown by...

Review created: 01/02/03
by: ladyfaile -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
You can watch it again and again and still enjoy it.

Cons:
Starts off slow.

Thunderheart (1999) Starring: Val Kilmer, Sam Shepard, Graham Greene Director: Michael Apted Rated: R - Not for sale to persons under age 18. Studio: Columbia/Tristar Studios I will try not to give away too much of the plot so as not to ruin the suspense for those who've not seen the movie. I first caught Thunderheart on tv late at night when nothing else was on. I thought, Val Kilmer's alright, why not. Well I loved this movie right from the start and have seen it several times again since then. I like it more and more each time. It's one of those films you have to watch more than once to...

"Sometimes, they have to kill us...."
Review created: 04/08/00
by: MrsGrimm -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A truthful window on ourselves and others

Cons:
This story made me embarrassed to be counted among "White Men".

"Sometimes, they have to kill us. They -have- to kill us, because they can't break our spirit." Jimmy Looks Twice, Oglala Sioux Did you sit in church last Sunday? Think back on that day. You are sitting with your family in the sanctity of your sacred space, communing with your God. Suddenly, armed strangers burst in, push your elderly and infirm about at gunpoint, drag people off their knees, interrupt prayers and shove them outside. Other strangers finish by smashing the blessed objects on your altar. How would you feel? Federal Agents assigned to a so-called "sensitive operation" on a..
