What a revelation about the people in that area of the country. He is creating more peace than all the wars we have ever had. I am thnakful for people like him.
The book was recommended by a friend in Japan. I was not sure I would like it, but it is very, very interesting. I would purchase it again, and may as a gift for a couple of friends at Christmas time. The adventures are so real to me having lived overseas for thirteen years......
This is an amazing story of one person making a difference. It was very inspiring to me, because I want to do the same thing except with healthcare in third world countries. With the war in Iraq happening, it is easy to lose sight of the innocent people in this area. David (the author) gives a great perspective on the amazing people in Pakistan. It was a great book to read because the author gave real life examples and traditions of the areas he visits. I couldn't put this book down. I can't wait for a sequel to come out.
This is definately more book club material. I have been desperately attempting to get those around me to actually read more lgetimate mayterial on Afghanistan and the surrounding area and understand it and the people. Mortenson became an true wild shot angel. After getting lost in the mountains of Pakistan after an unsuccessful attempt at K2 he is saved by a village and promises to come back and build a school. We're talkin a mountain equivalent to a surf bum who comes back to the US and makes contact through mnountaineers for funding and DOES IT. Then he continues, my true beleif is that conflict can be minimized/destroyed through understanding and education and the irradicatioin of the lowest levels of poverty
My best friend's daughter read it. Then she read it. Told me I needed to read it. I sent it to my son, who is an American Contract worker in Qater. He's been in a lot of those places and will love it too!
Have not had time to read this book yet. So many people have suggested this book that I just had to buy it. Am sure it will prove to be an especially good one. The book arrived in good time and in great shape. Thanks for continued good results buying books from Half.com.
To be quite honest, I at first thought the first few chapters of this book were somewhat boring. From the cover, I expected the book to go straight into the types of schools that were built and the benefits they wrought. After about 70 pages, I realized the inherent logic in portraying the life of someone who would turn out to save the education of thousands of children in (extremely) rural Pakistan.
The tone of the work is very accepting and frank. It does not hesitate to explain how the author felt about certain circumstances that impeded his pursuit of funding the school or the people he encountered during his mission. Furthermore, it takes a very honest look at the religion of Islam and the spiritual changes and understandings the author underwent.
Overall, this book was a wonderful look into the lives of people who most of us will never see or meet. I commend the authors on branding their struggle in such a beautiful way that will rouse interest in future readers for generations.
I needed this book for school and was able to get it on eBay ahead of time. Truly a wonderful story, of how one man, with seemingly no hope of ever achieving his goals overcoming his mountains and spreading peace on earth, and good will toward men.
You will not be disappointed in this well told story of perseverance, tolerance, and the power of one man to make a difference. It drags at the end, the first 3/4 is wonderful, hence 4 stars. Still a hardy recommendation.
This book is an inspiration. The story is amazing! It is told with great detail, and even though the exact locations get confusing, it is still very easy to follow. Highly recommended! Also a great book for a book club or a study group.
This book, most written by David Relin, is on the life of Greg Mortenson, a person who grew up in Africa and became a mounteneer. The book is written very well and is easy reading. There are a lot of details on third world cultures where Greg either lived or visited. I like the book and is the first book to read in a newly formed book club. I would recommend reading it, nice story line and good insight to various cultures.
This is an excellent book and should be read by all. It's not the actual writing that is important, but the contents. The seller shipped very quickly and the book was in brand new condition.
Fantastic reading! This is absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. I now have a new and more positive opinion about Islam. I am looking forward to the second book.
I just finished Three Cups of Tea and felt inspired to write this review. Brief synopsis: Greg Mortenson, former climber of the world's highest peaks, becomes impassioned about helping the remote villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan build schools, educating both girls and boys in these Muslim countries. He is clueless at first on how to gain financial support but eventually learns. He builds first one school, then goes on to build others in a countries cannot get their resources martialled to support education.
The reason I rated this book "good" rather than "excellent" is because I personally found it longer than it needed to be. The first half truly had me spellbound, but as the ending dragged along, I got impatient. Still, despite this problem (and maybe it's just me. . . ) this nonfiction tale truly offers a number of inspiring lessons. A western man who is open to the native culture can be accepted in Pakistan and make a difference. Here's a stupid thing to say, but it is a theme of this book: Despite widespread perceptions that Pakistan is full of Islamic radicals bent on destroying the West, most are just people like you and I, wanting to do the best for their families and especially their children. Education for these people is something they cannot take for granted, and because of that they cherish it all the more than many in the West. Thank you Greg Mortenson! I will be supporting the Central Asia Institute in hopes that they can continue to expand educational opportunities for children in South Asia.
Only about chapters into the book but is the most interesting thing I've read since college. You feel for Mortenson whom just wants keep his promise to build a school for the young children that have such a desire to learn but no one to teach them. I'm looking forward to reading the rest it. :)
If you're looking for books for your Book Club this is a must read - a book you will not want to put down. It's short and well written and very interesting. Greg Mortenson, a mountaineer climbing in the Himalayan mountains in Pakistan, takes on a project to find donated funds for schools for girls in remote nearly inaccessible mountainous Pakistan where people live as they have for hundreds of years with no eduction or schools for girls. Interesting what a few penneys can do. A fabulous book for intermediate and high schools literature classes with much to talk about in terms of different cultures and much more. English Teachers - you can read this in a few days - it will hold your attention and fascinate you and you will want to recommend for your school Library and as a class reading assignment - a great base for discussion. oregonbev
I purchased this as a book club selection. The beginning was a bit slow going because of the complexity of description of places and people. It took a while to figure out who was who but once into the body of the story it was captivating. One person with zeal and dedication was able to accomplish much against all odds. Gary Mortenson made many sacrifices in order to accomplish his dream of schools for the impoverished people in these remote areas.itle
It was an impulse purchase but gosh it was so easy. Odd, dang ebay is more demanding than the buyer. Demanding that 100 charactors will not encourage folks to leave reviews. I love the sell but am starting to wonder about ebay.
my monthly book group decided on this book we are looking forward to this book especially being able to compare with others written about same time period but in a different perspective thanks for the quick deilery
I bought this book because my book group was going to read it. We had voted on the books we wanted to read, and the description of this book sounded intriguing. It was even better than I expected! The type of work that Greg Mortenson has done and is doing is, I believe, the only way to prevent the creation of more terrorists. Mortenson, a former mountain climber, has given his life over to building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He particularly emphasizes educating girls and young women. In those countries that have been so battered by our bombs and so betrayed by our government, the government that intervened militarily, promised reconstruction, and then left, Greg Mortenson presents a different kind of American, one who cares about the people. He is a friend. and he gives and receives respect. Education opens up opportunities to the Pakistanis and the Afghanis, and they no longer see America as the enemy upon whom they aspire to exact revenge.
