  The Thing, 1951
Review created: 07/09/08

I personally love the film but more to the point cause James Arness is my Dad's cousin as well as his Brother Peter Graves. This film was a true classic and one I loved as a child. Also helps that I met the Thing, or should say the man behind the Thing. Great film and one my own kids love to watch with there dad.

Great movie. Saw it when I was a kid. Just as thrilling now as then. These classic movies didn't need sex or foul language to make them interesting.

  The Thing - Classic chiller
Review created: 04/09/08
by:

This was one of the first modern science fiction movies that I ever saw (at age 10)when it had me peeking through my fingers at the local movie theatre. In retrospect, I can now appreciate the classic components of crisp dialogue (Howard Hawks, the producer, was a master in this department) combined with excellent lighting and subtle camera angles. This film is a fine representative of the science fiction genre of the 50's - minimal special effects combined with a great suspensful story line, terrific character acting and chilling bursts of terrifying action. It's as strong a film today as it was in 1951. Watch the skies!

  Classic Sci-Fi drama
Review created: 04/04/08
by:

This is a fabulous horror film, intelligently scripted, that builds in intensity, yet does not provide much in the way of gratuitous schock scenes. The characters are well-rounded and believable. One leaves this satisfying drama with a feeling of appreciation for the artistic talent of those who created this film.

Good old original black and white movie that the Kurt Russell remake is based on. Jim Arness does a great job. The characters are true to the era.

The Old Thing - from another world

A space traveler crash lands in the Arctic. He and his ship are soon frozen. Some USAAF men and scientists discover it and try to thaw it but succeed only in destroying the ship. The pilot, however, survives, and they haul him, in his cake of ice, back to the base camp. When he accidentally thaws and returns to life, he realizes that he is stranded on an unfriendly world. He is not a happy camper.

He is eight feet tall, very strong, very angry, and bears a vague resemblance to James Arness. He has some, er, peculiarities. He has the physiology of a vegetable - sap is his blood - and he can regrow a severed limb. He thrives on animal blood - four-legged, two-legged, he isn't particular. His mission is to grow an army of others like him from seeds that he carries under his fingernails (or wherever), and he plants them in the base camp greenhouse. This is not good for the human race.

So how do you kill an enraged eight-foot carrot?

This is a "golden oldie" SF movie, one of the best of the 50's. It moves well, the tension builds, and the carrot is, um, fried (or whatever). It's infinitely better than the latest remake (starring Kurt Russell), which is a scream in the ha-ha sense. (Hollywood seems to be trying to outdo itself with each monster movie. Compare the latest "War of the Worlds" with the original. The monsters just get weirder and weirder, meaning less and less credible, meaning more and more laughable.) If you like good ol' SF, this should be in your collection.

  Review of DVD "The Thing"

This old time science fiction classic is seldon seen anymore on TV. Much of it I had forgotten except the scary alien tenicles reaching out. Upon viewing the
DVD I enjoyed the sharpness and bright colors. It appeared more alive and can stand up to any current sci-fi horror movie. The alien also seems to be the forerunner of the alien used in the "Alien" movies made much later, with the smaller head reaching out to grap a hold of you. Excellent movie. You could say they don't make them like this anymore even with all the computer animation.

Superb DVD quality of one of the great SF films of the 1950's. What more could you ask for ? 35mm theatrical quality on a DVD, unbelievable, but true ! This is a must for all serious SF fans. Also the sound, although not originally recorded in stereo, comes across extremely clear and undistorted. Very nice product !

The Thing you ought to see
Review created: 04/01/07

Clearly one of the finest Sci Fi movies made in the last 50 years. The style and quality of the filming. The way the writers took an unusual story "Who goes there" and adapted it to the screen. Highlights of the film are: the easy banter of the crew. The the secondary film plots that mingle with the main story. The well acted (By all of the actors and actresses) story, the effect on the screen of James Arness as the "Monster" . All of this done before CGI
Absolutely worth the price of Admission.

The original "The Thing" has always been one of my favorite monster movies. The characters generally do not do stupid things to increase their danger. The dialogue is fun to listen to.

I had taped this off the air several years ago but had misplaced the tape.

I saw this movie when it first hit the silver screen, nearly sixty years ago. I ordered this re-issue about a month ago and I'm still waiting to get it. I hope I receive it sometime soon. If not, I shall be displeased; even more than I am now.

  Great Classic Movie
Review created: 07/08/06

I am a huge fan of classic comedy and horror movies. The Thing From Another World is a true classic in the horror category. The monster is played by the legendary James Arness, before he appeared, later, on TV as Dodge's rough and tough marshall Matt Dillon. Any true lover of old 40's and 50's black and white movies will love this one. If I were an overpaid critic, I would rate it five stars.

The Thing from Another World (1951)
Review created: 07/01/06

I bought this movie because it is one of the seminal science fiction movies of the 1950's and is just plain good fun. Many of the genre copied this successful format for years to come.

The snappy dialogue, a trademark of Howard Hawks' movies, makes the characters real, likable and fun. It didn't blame the encounter with the alien on nuclear weapons.

I can't think of anything I really don't like about this movie, it's one of those movies for me that whenever I stumble upon it on tv, even with commercials, I stop and watch.

If you prefer fantastic special effects, color movies, then don't buy this movie. You might try the The Thing by John Carpenter, which I also bought on ebay, which follows the John Campbell story more closely but has some horrifying special effects.

Watch The Skies!! Something is Out There!!!
Review created: 07/25/05
by: daquan -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Spine-tingling sci-fi at its best!

Cons:
None to date.

WHY THE THING? The Thing,an RKO production, was one of my favorite sci-fi movies. It's just a scary today, as it was back when we were all children and we all sat in front of the television set to watch it. I don't know for sure if this was James Arness' first film ever, but I believe he was chosen for the film because of his tall height. To make him look more frightening

The Thing From Another World (1951)
Review created: 01/27/02
by: BrianKoller -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
suspense, direction, script

Cons:
stereotypes, plot implausibilities, romantic subplot

A 'B' film from the noted RKO studio, The Thing From Another World was a surprise blockbuster hit despite an obscure cast. The plot combined science-fiction, adventure, and horror with a talky but intelligent script and generally credible characters. The film holds up well today, and has been an obvious influence on later films, most notably Alien (1979). The consensus is that Howard Hawks, who produced the film, eventually became the director as well. Christian Nyby received the screen credit, but it was his first film assignment as a director. Nyby had been Hawks' editor on several of his...

The Best of Sci Fi- "The Thing"
Review created: 09/05/00
by: Saklani -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Spooky, excellent in every facet

Cons:
depiction of some scientists

The creepiest of the old time science fiction movies is "The Thing" (aka- "The Thing From Another World"). This excellent film skillfully blends humor and horror. Everything about this film is top notch, from the acting to the score. In the frozen wastelands, a group of scientists discover an UFO. Trying to uncover it, they dig up its frozen pilot. Through a stupid blunder, they release the creature. Unfortunately, he is rather hungry, and his favorite food is blood. He discovers humans taste rather pleasant, and the team of army men and scientists must find a way to destroy him, before he...

The aliens (or commies) are among us.
Review created: 12/17/02
by: yrreb52 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A good, scary movie.

Cons:
Anti-intellectualism.

Between the Lines The Thing From Another World (1951) is noteworthy as a historical and political artifact as well as taut entertainment. Based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s science fiction story "Who Goes There?," the movie is one of the earliest, if not itself archetypal, to exploit the inherent xenophobia of an invasion from outer space, both as horrific escapism and as a veiled urging of Cold War America to be alert for the spread of communism, from within and from without. "Watch the skies" is the admonition that closes the movie. Behind the Scenes It's generally agreed among cineastes...

  A Chiller for the Ages
Review created: 09/16/00
by: ArnieHarris -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Truly chilling, brilliantly directed and acted with spine-tingling score

Cons:
None

I have just finished watching Howard Hawk's "The Thing" for perhaps the 25th time since it first appeared on commercial television in an edited version in the late 1950's.Nonetheless, this horror sci-fi classic unfailingly raises the gooesflesh and inspires dread and terror as if it were being viewed for the first time. "The Thing" masterfully earns its chills through its taut direction, eerily claustrophobic atmospherics, brisk, rapid-clip and often overlapping dialogue, a spine-tingling, other-worldly score and perhaps the most cinematically powerful use of light and shadow in its black and..
