The Secret of the Old Clock - Nancy Drew strikes for the very first time

Pros:
Perfect level for 9-12 year olds, Nancy is a fun heroine

Cons:
Dated, but not so badly as to be unenjoyable

Series books are a fabulous thing for kids. Knowing that if they like one, they re bound to like the rest gives them something to look forward to and their parents a slight break when it comes to searching for books to satisfy their increasing young reader appetites. The series of all series for little girls is undoubtedly The Nancy Drew Mysteries. With 56 titles in the original series, Nancy can keep even the most voracious little reader happy for a good long time. The first Nancy Drew Mystery was penned in 1930 and is titled The Secret of the Old Clock. In it we are introduced to Nancy,...

Dr. Freudine Infuriates Jan As They Discuss Nancy Drew~
Review created: 06/02/06
by: jankp -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
the original and revised versions are enjoyable to read, but I prefer the original

Cons:
for me the revised version lacked some color and plausibility; less descriptive

NOTE - Dr. Freudine is a fictitious psychiatrist and my alter go who sometimes helps me to review books and movies mostly. Last time she watched the campy Rock, Pretty Baby with Irish and David. ******************* Early next morning I steal out of Irish s warm, comfy bed, quietly dress while giving Bengal the evil eye and hurry back to my place to shower and dress for my appointment with Jan at nine. I take pains to look my best in an understated, professional, dove-grey skirt and blouse with a maroon, polka-dotted scarf around my neck. Not able to eat I just gulp water and head for my...

The Secret of the Old Clock - Nancy Drew Strips Nasty People of Their Inheritance
Review created: 02/01/08
by: AliventiAsylum -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
easy to read, shows girls a smart girl with some integrity

Cons:
very dated, no real goals for Nancy

Oh to be young again. I was one of those girls who soaked up books every chance I got, even riding my bicycle to the local library a good few miles away on busy suburban roads. There weren't many books my Depression-Era-raised parents actually bought for me, but sometime between my eight and twelfth birthdays I managed to scam every Nancy Drew book available at the time. A variety of authors penned the novels over the years, although they were all released under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene . In the days before it seems the celebrity culture pervaded, seemingly telling girls to want to be like.

The dangers of roaming the Internet late at night...
Review created: 07/07/01
by: msiduri-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Books

Pros:
Fun.

Cons:
The bad guys are all B-A-D. Unrealistic writing. And the world is... white, white, white

I have three nieces who will be turning 10 in the next six months or so. All are avid readers--they do their Auntie Marie proud! While looking for books for them, I came across a Nancy Drew Starter Set at Barnes and Noble's made up of the first six books of the original series. Of course, I had to buy them and read them for myself, especially the first one, "The Secret of the Old Clock," which I'd sought as a child and never quite found. A lot of it was as I remembered it, 18-year-old Nancy with her titanium hair, her lawyer father and her uncanny ability to never quite get hurt. The dialogue.

Nancy Drew and Her Pals Were Racists in the 1940's
Review created: 05/12/00
by: porphyria -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Role models with excellent manners, language, and character.

Cons:
Some of the older versions contain racist slurs.

Doesn't sound right, does it? C'est vrai, mon frere. My father, being extremely familiar with my childhood adoration of the Nancy Drew mysteries, recently bought me five of these books at an auction. He thought they were original issues because they had badly-worn hard covers, but it turns out that all five are Book Club editions from the 1940's. I sat right down to read them all. I was reading along happily when, about 120 pages into The Mystery at the Moss-Covered Mansion, I came across a passage that made me stop in complete shock. Nancy Drew's best friend Bess had just said, "pickaninnies.
