Rainmaker - "All I want is what is due me"

Pros:
fine acting

Cons:
.....

Realizing this is not a true story does nothing to diminish the fact that the premise of the story totally ticked me off! Dealing on a personal basis with insurance companies and their frailties, I took this story a little to heart. Not many people felt as I do about this movie, but then I have usually been known as one to march to a different drum. Never afraid to swim against the current or speak my mind, I offer my ideas on this saga. PLAYERS; Clare Danes - Kelly Riker; Matt Damon - Rudy Baylor; Danny DeVito - Deck Schifflet; John Voigt - Leo Drummond; Mary Kay Place - Dot Black; Dean...

  Courtroom Drama at its Best
Review created: 11/16/00

Pros:
shows that there are still really good people out there

Cons:
makes you nervous about trusting insurance companies, one very violent scene

I am nearing the end of a semester-long college cinema class, and last night's movie pick was Francis Ford Coppola's film The Rainmaker, based on the John Grisham novel of that same name. The movie is centered around Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon), the fresh-out-of-law-school lawyer who both narrates and and participates in the action of this film. I recently reviewed the movie The Devil's Advocate, and one thing that immediately struck me in this movie was that Rudy was the antithesis of the main character in the other. Naive but determined, Rudy has a heart of gold and is willing to sacrifice his.

  Fair Adaptation of the Book
Review created: 05/27/05
by: videodude -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Sprawling cast, Coppola's name, good and fair adaptation of the book

Cons:
Post-Coppola film, doesn't have all of the book

John Grisham's The Rainmaker doesn't contain even a smidgen of Francis Ford Coppola's greatest works. The man who gaves us The Godfather Trilogy, Apocalypse Now, and The Conversation is now directing a project very different from what his previous work had meant. The only seemingly defining trait that were in Coppola's earlier works were an outsider. Not like the emotionally troubled Gene Hackman of The Conversation or emotionally aloof Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now. The Rainmaker is a guy clearly in over his head, struggling to survive in a cutthroat world where survival is more important...

  Surprisingly fun courtroom drama.
Review created: 06/25/00
by: scott29 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Rourke, Damon, Voight, Devito

Cons:
Claire Danes. Andrew Shue as a tough guy?

Quick primer on making a good courtroom drama: Get good actors, have someone who at least knows how to hold a pen work on the screenplay, throw some funny dialogue in, and even give us a few surprises. Simple enough, but then why are most John Grisham adaptations dumber than a dead mule? The Client? Um, no thanks. The Firm? Not terrible, but just really silly. The Pelican Brief? HA! Julia Roberts plays a lawyer. The Chamber? Zzzz. Political propaganda posing as a movie. A Time to Kill? Wait, I liked this one actually. So here we have an idealistic young lawyer (Matt Damon) who starts working..

  Nothing Extraordinary About the Rain
Review created: 12/05/01
by: wlswarts -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good Acting, Good Characters, Good pacing

Cons:
Idealistic Themes and Plot

There are some novelists who write one or two good novels, then spend the rest of their careers churning out the same two stories over and over again. Their works populate every bus station, airport and drug store. John Grisham, Tom Clancy and V.C. Andrews are three such authors who have written enough garbage such that their paperbacks will always be available in any grocery store that has books. So, as you may figure, I went into "John Grisham's The Rainmaker" with pretty low expectations. It turns out that "The Rainmaker" is one of Grisham's two works that were pretty good, one of the two.
