I started reading The Purpose Driven Life at the request of a friend who was going through a difficult time in her life. The book is designed to teach the reader about God's purpose for his/her life and how to live in such a way as to fulfill that purpose. It contains 40 short chapters (4-5 pages each) and suggests reading 1 chapter a day for 40 days (a symbolic number in the bible...40 days of rain, 40 days in the desert, etc.) The book recommends reading it with a friend so that you can stay accountable to the reading, discuss each chapter with that person, and better absorb the message.

The book is designed for Christians at any point in their faith. It does not matter if you are new to Christianity or have been following God for 60 years, it has something to teach you or reinforce in you wherever you are in your walk. Pastor Rick Warren does a good job of defining God's purpose for our lives as found in the scriptures. He writes in a very accessible way and because you only read 1 short chapter a day, you have time to let each message sink in. While at times some of the messages seem basic, it is through mastering the basics that we can grow and evolve into more authentic, committed Christians.

In addition to writing about God's purpose for us, Pastor Warren provides practical ways to fulfill our role. Each chapter concludes with a "Point to Ponder" (the message of the chapter), a "Verse to Memorize" (to reinforce God's purpose for us) and a "Question to Ask" (so that we can apply the message to our own life). All in all, it is a very practical and useful book that, whether you read with a friend or on your own, will provide daily encouragement that will enrich your life. It is the type of book that you'll be able to pick up many times in your life to help guide you in your Christian walk.

Let's just say that "personality and customer service is not in this seller's vocabulary; and I will not be doing business with her again. Plus one of the tapes was missing but I will take the loss just to forget about this seller.

  A Must-Read for all Unbelievers

"You were not put here to be remembered but to prepare for eternity." This is one of the first points of ponder offered in The Purpose Driven Life, and, admittedly, if you are an unbeliever, or, more appropriately, an "unfollower," this book is going to sting at first. But if you can make it through the first few chapters and let go of the human condiion--that is the pride and ego surrounding your inability to accept God's role for you in this life (and the hereafter)--you will be rewarded with a deeper understanding of God and a desire to seek further your place in His kingdom.

  The Purpose Driven Life

The Purpose Driven Life is one of the best books that I have ever read. We studied it at our church a couple of years ago. My Thursday night Bible Study class wanted to study the book and I had forgotten how awesome the lessons are. Each chapter starts out with a tidbit - "It's not about you" or "You are not an accident". This book really helps people realize how much God loves them and has a plan for each individual's life. You will want to read it over and over again. It will change your life!

  Life renewing and cherishable read
Review created: 12/02/06

I have read this book and it is wonderful. Enlightening, uplifting, builds hope and is unlike any other "self-help" books, with supporting facts from the most authoritative literary source in the world the bible. It is nicely woven, easily read, reader friendly, and has short chapters. It is a do it yourself attitude adjustment that I might have valued when going through my tough young adult years. It gives you purpose in life wherever/whenever you are in the process of a lifetime. We decided to give a copy to all of our immediate family that can read for Christmas-E-bay afforded that luxury. This book is something to read and re-read again and again. The young and disillusioned of America would also appreciate the hope and guidance this book offers. It should be a staple in all recovery programs, detox units, battered women shelters, libraries, universities, bookstores, youth groups, high schools, elementary schools, and family homes. I am really sold on this book. Last of all it offers purpose, focus, clarity, and a myriad of positive rewards.

  A Guide To Life
Review created: 09/08/06

I have found this to be an excellent book. Full of faith and encouraging words. Have bought copies to send to family and friends. I am reading it through for the second time and it finding things I missed in the first reading. I would recommend this book to anyone. I found it even better when you follow up the scripture reading given in the book, with your own version of the Bible. Easy to read and understand. Helps you understand yourself and why you are here. I'm sure it will be one I read many more times over.

The Purpose-Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?
Review created: 03/27/05
by: popsrocks-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Books

Pros:
It can change a persons life.

Cons:
One must be ready to accept the goals and teachings within the book. It's-not-always-easy.

This is a book that my wife gave to me a while back. It is a guide to Christian prayer, study and service written by author Rev. Rick Warren a Evangelical preacher who has written other books in reference to discovering purpose in life. Please don't let that stop you from reading more about this book. I started reading it and then fell off a while. It was a book of learning step by step "The Meaning of Life". Yes, for some they can truly learn that elusive bit of knowledge! To read this book and follow it without a firm commitment may make it one that will never be finished. At the same time..

The Five Cornerstones of Christianity-500th Review
Review created: 12/04/03
by: skbreese -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Well organized, Thought provoking, Easy to read and understand

Cons:
Some of the author's doctrines are questionable, Some concepts are over simplified

Rick Warren's best seller, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?, was written primarily to encourage Christians in their spiritual journey. If read from any other perspective, it is likely to be misunderstood, and a disappointing experience. Warren is the founding pastor of a mega church in the Los Angeles area that was founded on principles of his previous best seller, The Purpose Driven Church. Warren reveals his premise for this book in the first paragraph: It's not about you. The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of...

The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?

by: snpmurray -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Beautiful quotations, clearly written.

Cons:
Self-serving rather than uplifting at times. Underwhelming. No index.

This is a book I read out of pure curiosity. As it happens, I am in the fortunate position of already possessing a purpose driven life, and I know that works well for me. Having said that, I know plenty of people who tell me that they are also perfectly happy without any purpose in their life. It has always seemed to me that everyone is so different, some things work for some and some for others. This was the philosophy with which I came to Rick Warren s book; I thought it would be interesting to hear another opinion (isn t it always?) Rick Warren is a Christian pastor and author; he works...

I Find My Purpose From Within Not Without
Review created: 12/04/05
by: vemartin -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Beautifully written prose.

Cons:
Same ole story, same ole song and dance my friends

Allow me the preface this review with an admission; I am a proud agnostic and I embody all that that label congers in the mind. I have never been a deeply religious person; indeed as a student of history, I believe religion collectively has done more harm in the development of humanity then good. That does not mean however that I am not in touch with my spiritual self; spirituality I believe transcends religion. And I do not believe the Holy Bible to be the world of God; the book if taken in it s entirely reads more like a human derived novel then it does the words and thought of an all...

  The Meaning of Life
Review created: 11/18/03
by: grandgram -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A book for those lost and want to find answers to their life.

Cons:
Very detailed, repetitive and the 40 days.

The following is my comment on Sean s (snpmurray )book review in Sept.22, 2003 of this book The Purpose Driven Life-What On Earth am I Here For by Rick Warren. It sounds like this book was written for the already choir members or for himself. It's way too preachy and sounded like my youth in a very staid Dutch Reform. My views on religion have changed, not on personal religion but on churchy religion. Besides all religious leaders want you to think theirs is the only way to a pure life. Interesting review but I will pass on the book. Grandgram/letta That was then this is now and I am in...
