This film is an absolute masterpiece. Filled with stunning performances, beautiful scenery, amazing tricks and effects, and enough twists and turns to keep a pretzel maker busy for years.
Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors, same goes for Michael Caine, and both are absolutely marvelous in this movie. Hugh Jackman is incredible as well.
Just like The Illusionist, The Prestige takes you breath away. Amazing movie to be enjoyed by everybody.
Excellent Movie... Altho It Resembles Another Movie... by the name of 'The Illusionist', a similar movie.
However this one has Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale with Michael Caine !
My wife can usually guess the plot twists, but the ending to this one had even her fooled!
Between magic and science this movie had all kinds of twists and turns as Hugh's character and Christian's character kept upcoming one another as magicians.
It is a long movie, but not that you would notice, as the plot is very good, the characterization is excellent, the cast is superior, and it even includes the scientist Tesla who was in direct competition with Thomas Edison at the beginning of the 1900's !!
Excellent rental movie, and one for the Film Library of those that collect either Hugh Jackman's or Michael Caine's works!
With actor Christian Bale teaming up with director/writer Christopher Nolan for Batman: The Dark Knight - attention is being given to the team.
The two also teamed up for this excellent movie with a very unique plot.
The Prestige and The Illusionist were released relatively close to each other and I think this caused some confusion ... with many people thinking they were the same movie or that The Prestige might be trying to copy The Illusionist. That couldn't be further from the truth. The plots are not even remotely similar ... so don't let the similar topics of magic dissuade you from buying, renting (or downloading) BOTH of these movies ... even to watch back to back on a rainy weekend.
I particularly like The Prestige because of its complete irreverence to political correctness - so far a hallmark of Chis Nolan films (The director of The Prestige, Batman Begins, Batman: The Dark Knight). The movie has a sub-plot involving Nikola Tesla - a contemporary electrical engineer of Thomas Edison who was unjustly mistreated by the US government in order to diefy Edison as an American hero. The story presented about Tesla in the movie is very uncommon. Most historians portray Tesla as a crazed Mad Scientist - almost turning him into a Doc Brown from Back To The Future.
It's hard to really speak of the plot without giving anything away. The movie centers around two magician's assistants who later become fiercely rivaling theatrical magicians holding their own. Animosity arises between the pair of magicians, who were formerly good friends, when a tragic accident occurs on stage. The larger plot of the movie is discovered through flashbacks as the two magicians read each others personal journals - one reading from jail ... the other reading during an obsessive mission to find the ultimate trick. If you like plot twists ... this movie definitely has that. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale star with Scarlett Johansen and Micheal Caine in supporting roles. David Bowie plays a perfect cameo role as Nikola Tesla.
There was nothing to dislike, the mystery was superb. The mystery even at the end of the movie. David Bowie was great also in the movie. Besides Chriatian Bale & Hugh Jackman
Excellent movie. It kept my attention from start to finish. I enjoyed the original storyline and the ending was excellent. It had drama, mystery, and suspense...all the makings of a great movie. You will not be disappointed with this one.
Great movie, saw it first, then bought it. If you are looking for a 'good' movie to watch 'cause you haven't seen one in a while, I'd recommend this movie, great for anyone above the age of 15.
I think the beginning of the movie seemed to move slow because we already knew that Robert's wife was going to die and Alfred had a hand in it. From thereon it got really interesting. One trying to outdo the other...to the extreme. David Bowie playing Tesla was a treat.
Of course everyone will want to see this movie because of the leads,Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman but the real power lies with the supporting cast. Old pro Michael Caine does a masterful job as Cutter, the engineer behind the magic tricks.Great performances are also turned in by Rebecca Hall as Bale's long suffering wife and Scarlett Johansen as the beautiful magician's assistant. But the real scene stealer is David Bowie, who is absolutely marvelous as Nicola Tesla, the electrical wizard, who many say was the most brilliant mind to ever walk the planet. He is measured, precise and worldly wise as a man who was just as obsessive in his own way as the magicians who strove for the next BIG illusion. Christopher Nolan is at the helm and brings a very atmospheric take on Victorian England and the magicians/con men who entertained the public. This movie will keep you guessing until the end credits and beyond
The movie is absolutely compeling and will blow you off your seat in teh end !The movie is absolutely compeling and will blow you off your seat in teh end !
I choose to buy it because it's one of my favorites movies and because I'm collecting the films of Chris Nolan. What I like more about the item and the store is that everything is exactly like they say, for me the time of deliver was a little long but I think is because is far from me.
The only problem that I had was the packaging because is a little weak and the protecting box was a little broken...besides that is one of the best stores in Ebay.
This movie is an excellent film that doesn't have today's filth. There a few things that might be disturbing to young children, but I believe I could show this film to those as young as 7 or 8. This suspense filled movie was a must buy after I viewed it the first time. I HAVE to watch it again to see what I missed when I blinked. If you like magic, love suspense and don't care for the typical sex/language filth in most hollywood productions, own this movie.
This is a great movie to watch from the beginning to the end. It captures you from the moment you realize there are three parts to a magical act. The whole movie revolves around two magicians, one a great presenter of his art, the other a mediocre magician that outdoes the better performer. But there is a twist. It's the twist that you have no idea is coming. The ending is so powerful, you don't realize what risks the better magician sacrified for his art... or did he. The mediocre magician has still outsmarted the superior one. In the end, it's the Prestige of how the poorer performer out prestiged his superior match. I've watched this movie many times. It still excites the imagination, you can feel the frustration, you can feel their pain, their wanting to outdo eachother and what lengths they both will follow to attain the perfect Prestige. The actors allow you to follow the story, they do not distract you from what is the next scene, the next twist, the next hopeful conclusion. It is very fluid, very complicated, very interesting, and you'll respect their achievements.
I love this movie. The acting is fantastic, the plot is amazing, and the directing / camera work is terrific. I am so glad to have this in my collection. Hugh Jackman (Robert Angier) & Christian Bale (Alfred Borden) play rival magicians in an all out war of revenge. Well Angier (Jackman)wants revenge anyway, Borden(Bale)just seems to be trying to live his life, but this man has secrets. Secrets are what Angier (Jackman) wants to use to destroy him. There really isn't to much more that can be said without taking away from the many turns the plot takes, other than to say never be sure you know what is going on, and what exactly you are seeing in this movie, untill the end whan all is revealed in the Presige! I loved it absolutely!
Christopher Nolan has struck gold again in this screenplay adaption of the 1955 Chris Priest novel. Excellent characters, amazing storyline, and an ending that leaves you asking for more! Bale and Jackman are the perfect fit for their roles, and are aided by more great acting from Scarlet Johansen and Michael Caine. If you liked the Illusionist, this is the perfect movie for you. Also, if you like suspense and twists, I'd recommend this masterpiece.
One of the greatest films in recent years, The Prestige contains everything an excellent movie requires.
The cast is superb as Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman along with Michael Caine play their roles with excellence. The imagery and symbolism within the film add greatly to the depth. In addition, the twists in this movie are some of the best in recent years.
This is a great movie. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time of this movie and then at the end there was a complete twist. The twist got me hooked and I had to buy it.
So different and very awesome. I love this movie and The Illusionist with Edward Norton. I got them both. I so enjoy a great magic movie with a GREAT unexpected twist at the end. It is so very neat to watch and to see the different twists and turns of the show go. Plus Christian Bale is hot.
My husband and I can sit and debate aspects of this movie, it is so fun to watch over and over! We bought it because it is hard to get your hands on in movie stores/red box/library when you are in the mood to watch it.
British director Christopher Nolan's (BATMAN BEGINS) eclectic resume gains another interesting entry with THE PRESTIGE. The basic plot, which concerns the rivalry between two magicians in early 20th-century London, closely resembles a fellow 2006 movie--Edward Norton's THE ILLUSIONIST--and the two films are sure to be closely compared. In Nolan's film, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale bring the characters of Robert Angier and Alfred Bordon to life. Robert and Alfred were young magician apprentices together, but became bitter rivals as their careers began to shape their adult lives and a terrible accident claimed the life of Robert's wife. In the subsequent years Robert has become wildly jealous of Alfred's superior talents, so in a last ditch attempt to steal some artistic ground he sends his assistant, Olivia (Scarlett Johansson), to infiltrate his rival's lair and steal the secret to a spectacular trick called "The Transported Man." Nolan's film twists and turns down a number of unexpected avenues as it flits back and forth between numerous time periods, creating a movie that needs to be watched as closely as the tricks his leading characters perform. Bale and Jackman perfectly execute their roles, winding up the tension to an unbearable degree as they willfully enter into some dangerously competitive patterns of behavior. Michael Caine makes his second appearance in a Nolan film, almost reprising his role of Alfred in BATMAN BEGINS by playing Cutter, Jackman's mentor; and Johansson pouts and flounces across the elaborate sets like a classic Hollywood screen siren. Stylistically, THE PRESTIGE is full of dark, gloomy colors and a palpable feeling of menace, which is an impeccable visual match for the viewer's growing unease as the protagonists push each other to increasingly ridiculous lengths. It's not an easy film to digest, but Nolan's movie offers intelligent and challenging fare that will likely reveal further cinematic magic on repeated viewings.
