Why I bought The Philadelphia Story

I bought The Philadelphia Story because it is one of my favorite old classic movies. Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite movie stars. I liked the story line. How a rich girl ( Katherine Hepburn) saw herself as a girl just wanting to be loved, but how the men in her life put her on a pedestal that she could not live up to. Cary Grant was great in this movie, portraying the only man in her life that really understood her. I have loved this movie ever since I saw it the first time over 20 years ago.

Cukor's The Philadelphia Story: the Ice Queen Cometh...
Review created: 04/16/02
by: telynor-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Comedies just never quite get this funny these days.

Cons:
A modern viewer will be left wondering Huuuhh? at some of this.

Originally intended for the stage, director George Cukor took the Broadway smash and found a few big names to step in and take a part. And what a cast we get in this funny, witty, comedy of love and manners in upper-class Connecticut in the 1940's. Monied, bored, acid-tongued Tracy Lord (Katherine Hepburn in her pre-Spencer Tracy days) is engaged to be married to the correct, socially acceptable George Kitteridge (John Howard) - who is just the wrong sort of person for her. He's rigid and unyielding in his views, and although Tracy thinks that the marriage will be a success, it's pretty...

 George Cukor's -The Philadelphia Story-1940

Pros:
Hepburn, Grant, Stewart in a love triangle with very sharp angles

Cons:
Filmed like a play; not bad, just expect it!

Some of the best things in life really ARE old movies! How would you like to see a movie with impeccable performances, the best comic timing and some of the most interesting dialog you've heard in some time? Got your interest yet? This movie, The Philadelphia Story (1940) offers all those things and more. This films includes a trio of surprising superstars, although none of them was considered a "superstar" at the time. Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and Katherine Hepburn make a fantastic team. Their performances were directed by George Cukor, a brilliant director that has gathered less glory than.

 The Philadelphia Story

Pros:
Cary Grant, James Stewart, Katharine Hepburn
Cons:
Poor continuity between the wisecracks, characters don't seem related, stagy
The Philadelphia Story (1940) Katharine Hepburn is one of those rare women who seem to be more interesting and attractive when they get older. I liked her as a harridan in The Lion in Winter and as a spinster in Rooster Cogburn but I could hardly stand her as a young woman in The Philadelphia Story. Hepburn plays Tracy Lord, a spoiled daughter of a rich Philadelphia family quite similar to her own real-life family from what I remember reading about her. The family consists almost entirely of black sheep, but they have enough money to indulge their vices and get out of scrapes. Hepburn was 33,.

Pros:
One of the all-time great Star-Director combinations with extra Stars besides!

Cons:
Bite your tongue! It's unthinkable with this one.

If you watch this movie, even the possibility of such boredom becomes unimaginable. The move is, of course, The Philadelphia Story starring Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. Oddly enough, Hepburn was deep in a period of unpopularity among movie makers because of her difficulty to work with. Even here, she had originally asked for Clark Gable for the Cary Grant role, and Spencer Tracy for the Jimmy Stewart role. If it hadn't been for contractual conflicts, she might have got them. It would have been an entirely different movie if she had because Clark Gable didn't like "Ladies.
