  Phantom Tollbooth Video
Review created: 01/03/08

It is a great video for teachers to use in their classroom as a compare/contrast lesson with the book. Teachers are very limited to what videos can be shown and this is an excellent video that is rated "G". A rare find.

  The Phantom Tollbooth (VHS)
Review created: 07/05/07

This VHS tape (The Phantom Tollbooth) was one of my older sons favorite movies. Lately I have been buying movies for my young sons (mostly favorites of my older boys). I had no idea how hard this would be to get, or how expensive. But it was worth it. My two older sons have even watched it again & have very much enjoyed it. I'm so glad I was able to purchase a copy. Kelly

  Blast From The Past
Review created: 03/11/07

I remember loving this movie as a child. My brother and I would watch it all the time. As a mother of an eight year old boy, I have started to try and bring back some of my favorite things from when I was a child. I love sharing these kinds of things with him to see how he reacts to them. Often he enjoys them, which goes to show you a true classic never dies. I have to admit that while I don't share quite the same enthusiasm I once did about this Movie/Cartoon, I do believe it sends a good message to children. That's something I can be enthusiastic about sharing with my son and I'm ultimately glad that I did.

  Campy 70's Animated Short

Sorry to all those who adore the book but this animated version of the Norton Juster cult favorite is just not fun. It's campy 70's music doesn't translate to the 21st century and it's attempts to animate Juster's detailed and witty descriptions of human foibles in numbers and letters just don't carry. The 3 stars are for young kids, say less than 10, who may find Milo's animated world cool; like a prehistoric video game. Butch Patrick is fine (although Eddie Munster images kept ringing in my brain). The movie sticks to Juster's plot line. But Tock and Humbug are far less endearing when embodied in cartoon containers. In all honesty, Juster's masterpiece never made it as high up the ladder for me as Roald Dahl (Willie Wonka and James & the Giant Peach) or Dr. Seuss for that matter (sorry but the Doldrums don't hold a candle to the Who's in Whoville).

  Great didactive cartoon

Sort of a cross between School House Rocky show and perhaps Wizard of Oz. Almost a cult like film the older generation of emos. Well to be serious, children of any age would love this adventure. A lackadaisical live action character essentially daydreams and goes through a 'tollbooth' which takes him into another dimension. All your elementary subjects can be summed up on Milo's journey through this fantasyland.
No wonder this is among the higest selling VHS out there. I hope that in near future a genuine DVD version is released.

WRITE OFF: This Tollbooth Should be closed for Repairs!
Review created: 10/14/00
by: ChrisJarmick -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Even Cliff Notes style the story is strong and characters interesting

Cons:
Voices miscast, pacing all wrong, too safe, feels like a long t.v. special.

This review is part of the HATED the Movie, LOVED the Book write-off. I hate that this film might actually turn off people from reading the book. This film should be avoided until after you read the book it is based on. Please be sure and read my review of the book when you are done with this review. I Loved the Book, Hated the Movie. Is this film awful? No. It should have been an excellent film. MGM spent a few dollars on it (animated movies are never cheap) and hired one of the best, Chuck Jones, to direct it. Chuck of course was one of the legendary animation directors who lent his own...

  An Overlooked Treasure
Review created: 07/16/00
by: trep -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Great movie!

Cons:
Hard to find

Based on the book written by Norton Juster, this delightful family film may be difficult to locate in the quagmire of animated videos dominated by Disney, Nickelodeon and the like. You may have to search several Wal-marts, K-marts and Targets before you find a copy, but if you like quality animation and a charming story, the effort will be worth it. Without spoiling too much of the plot, it can be described as putting a unique twist on "Alice in Wonderland." Its clever use of wordplay (i.e. visual puns) brings to mind Piers Anthony's "Xanth" novels. For example, a noisy monster is known as...

  Slightly dated, but nonetheless charming
Review created: 08/22/00
by: cr0wgrrl -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
great Chuck Jones animation, lots of great wordplay for kids

Cons:
non-animated sections of movie are incredibly dated-looking (but fortunately short)

While not a completely faithful adaptation of the wonderful children's book it is based on, The Phantom Tollbooth is nonetheless enchanting fare for children. When a young boy who is bored with his life receives a mysterious car and tollbooth as a present, he embarks on a magical animated journey that encourages him to learn and teaches him why words, numbers, sounds and colors are important. Along the way he meets a variety of friendly and hostile characters, including Tick-Tock the watchdog (who literally has a watch in the middle of his body), the twin sisters Rhyme and Reason, and a whole.
