I had watched this movie about 10 years ago soon after it came out and remembered that it was good then. This time I watched it, it was even better. Maybe because I was older and understood more of what was going on...haha. But, anyway I would recommend this to anyone in for a good suspenseful movie. It's pretty just the same to buy it on eBay as it is to rent it at Blockbuster. GOOD MOVIE

This is a great movie that twists together the elements of murder mystery and political intrigue. Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts both give excellent performances.

A birthday gift from my daughter
Review created: 03/03/08

I was given 30.00 to spend for my birthday so since I already have a large collection of videos I decided to add to it. I loved this because I could get several DVD's at .01. I was able to purchase 5 DVD's that I wanted for my collection. This was a great way for my daughter to get me something that she knew I would like.

I am currently replacing all of my VHS collection with DVD's. I have particular stars that I like such as Denzel Washington and strive to make them a part of my collection. I have been colleting movies for over 20 years and have a large collection. I have found that Ebay is a great place to expand my collection.

  A gripping thriller that works
Review created: 10/11/06(updated 10/12/06)

This is one of Julia Roberts' less-known films but it deserves to be one of the most watched. Law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) stumbles on the theory of an improbable conspiracy that happens to be true and, in so doing, makes herself a target of the conspirators.

After she tells her story to an investigative reporter (Denzel Washington) the pair team up to piece together the conspiracy while potential witnesses die around them. The screenplay has all the hallmarks of John Grisham and Alan Pakula and manages to maintain high tension and drama in a series of unlikely situations. The result is a credible and frightening picture of power in politics.

Similar to "The Firm" in its matching of ingenuous honesty against ruthless power, the film holds the viewer's attention and contains some deft touches. It is certainly a film to watch, maybe a film to own.

THE PELICAN BRIEF: HUBRIS VS. HUMILITY
Review created: 09/23/06
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

John Grisham's book, The Pelican Brief, comes to life in this movie thriller! Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts give a spectacular performance in this story of how power and corruption can be obliterated against the humility of one ordinary individual (Roberts) and the intrigue and concern of an investigative reporter (Washington).

The movie is intense and keeps moving for the entire two hours and for the most part, stays in step with Grisham's original book.

John Grisham tends to gravitate toward themes of hubris vs. humility and The Pelican Brief is an outstanding example of the irony within hubris ... too much pride inherently creates its own vulnerability.

I like the entire movie, I had seen it on tv is why I bought it.....BUT IT IS A 2 SIDED DVD DISC which means you have to get up in the middle of the movie to turn the disc over....I think when a seller is selling this item on ebay that they need to add this because if I would have know this was a 2 sided dvd I would have never ordered it and so I feel like I wasted my money on this and could not get a refund!!!!!!!

The Pelican Brief --- Starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington (Written by John Grisham)
Review created: 03/01/06
by: three_ster-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
great acting, strong story, one of John Grisham's better films

Cons:
not as dramatic the second time

At one point in time of my life, this was my favorite movie, simply because of the way it was carried out, and how it seemed so suspenseful at the time. Since then it has been knocked down my list quite a ways, but it is still one of those movies that I don't mind watching again. The Pelican Brief is one of John Grisham's novels, and it was quite a good book. That being said, they really needed to cast some good actors in the leading roles, and I think that they succeeded with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. The film came out back in 1993, and is of course surrounding the court system,...

  Average Legal Thriller
Review created: 05/26/00
by: djmont -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good Performances

Cons:
So-So Script

Mega-bestselling author John Grisham s novels seem tailor-made for the big screen. To Hollywood where no one reads anyway they are nothing more than three hundred page treatments for the next blockbuster film. The Pelican Brief is no different. It is Grisham s best book to date and a passable film. Not as good as The Firm, but certainly better than The Client. The story is fairly unusual for the thriller genre in that it features a female protagonist. Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) is a young law student in New Orleans who is having an affair with one of her professors (Sam Shepard). When the...

  Go Darby
Review created: 07/19/00
by: lildev -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
keeps you fastened to your seat

Cons:
if you miss a little you miss a lot

I will admit that this movie does start out sort of slow. It is one that you have to watch from the start to end to really grasp. If you do not you will get lost. I had to watch it twice to make sure I got all of the information straight. This is a information packed movie and a must see for mystery and John Grisham fans. It all begins when two Supreme court Justices have been killed Justice Rosemburg and Justice Jenson. The reasoning behind it is speculation. Both of the Justices were supposed to be protected by the FBI. A gunhoe law student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) writes a brief stating..

  The Pelican Takes Flight
Review created: 12/21/99
by: daleyc -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Well made and entertaining

Cons:
Parts of the movie at time slow and confusing

The Pelican Brief is perhaps Julia Roberts' to date best dramatic role. Playing a Tulane University law student Roberts becomes part of a conspiracy that takes the lives of two members of the supreme court. She prepares a brief speculating on the murder of the judges. Her law school professor/mentor/boyfriend played by Sam Sheppard is later killed when he presents her brief to friend in Washington. Roberts' character takes flight after several attempts on her life and is paired Denzel Washington a investigative reporter for the Washington Post. Together they set out prove the Brief to be...

  Darby's Theory
Review created: 12/30/00
by: jspice25 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Great acting by Denzel and Crew.

Cons:
missing the sexual tension and the romance of the book

When 2 supreme court justices are murdered, everyone from the F.B.I. is left to wonder who the murderer is. Then 24 year-old Tulane University student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) who had a friendly affection for one of the murdered justices.( the late Hume Cronyn) She develops a theory about who's responsible for the killings. Using the resources of the school library and several semi-public court case files.that is later dubbed :The Pelican Brief(Hence the title of the movie). Unfortunately her little brief ( which is her theory on who commited the murders) turns out to be dead on as to who...
