The Paper (1997, DVD)

The Paper - What is the truth worth?

Pros:
Lots to think about. Great cast. Solid directing.

Cons:
Oh boy - the women in this one took a hit to the chins.

Why in this world would anyone work for a print newspaper in a day when TV and net news pull in bigger audiences and can provide the scoop faster? It s all about the words baby, it s all about the words. You can t really say much in 30 seconds or with info boxes clicked to other corners of the net world, but you can wax on about the story or an issue in the daily paper. Print will survive. That is my prediction. Reporter flicks have historically been big, but they have been rare in recent years. I hate to even admit that this one dates to 1994 and that it is really the last decent print...

Pros:
Keaton and Close - explosive!

Cons:
Not enough Quaid

This bad boy is listed as a drama but frankly it was as much comedy as drama to me. First you have a flagging tabloid, looking for an editorial break to release it from the gutter and put it on the top shelf. Then you have two black boys arrested for the murder of a car full of white businessmen (well, if they were attorneys ..... ) and the tabloid trying to get the hard story line on these boys. Throw in major rivalry between the managing editor (Glenn Close) and the city editor (Michael Keaton) and the usual deadline. An ex-reporter (Marisa Tomei) who is Keaton's wife and VERY pregnant and..

The Paper is always Hectic, is it not?
Review created: 09/08/04
by: quipowerty -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Real depiction of life for newspapermen and the world around them.

Cons:
A few unnecessary bits of humor, but that s it.

I went to college as a Communications Major, hoping to some day become a NY Times journalist. For various reasons I never became one (maybe I m too independent-minded for this high-quality paper?) That said, it s worth checking out the flick called simply the Paper, which I saw at least a few times in communications and journalism classes, and then again on cable and on video. The plot revolves around the hectic schedule that a typical reporter has to follow. A reporter s job, even a high-paying one, is never very easy. He must stick to tight schedules, he must never miss an interview or an...

Our news may depend upon two people's personal disputes?

We'd like to think that the "real" media has a much higher standard of quality and ethics than sensationalistic tabloids, but "The Paper" proves they really don't. The media is a business just like everything else, and they'll do whatever it takes to make more money and sell more papers. The story revolves around Henry Hackett (Keaton), the Metro editor for "The Sun," a New York tabloid newspaper. It's not the most elite publication in the world, but it is respected and has good production values, yet Henry wants to move on to the "New York Sentinel." We learn a lot about the paper through...

  Captures that manic newsroom feel
Review created: 12/31/99

Pros:
Excellent cast, strong humor

Cons:
The "serious" subplot gets tired

Journalism is a high-stress profession full of strange people, but newspaper reporting can also be one of the most exciting and influential jobs around, and no movie captures the manic, human nature of working at a newspaper quite like Ron Howard s The Paper. Knowing he can t compete with the suspense and drama of a movie like All the President s Men, Howard focuses more on the sacrifices people make working for a newspaper. Consider Henry (Michael Keaton), the metro editor. As the movie opens, it s 7 a.m. and he s getting up to head in to work after having gotten home only four hours ago..
