This is pure Clint! It's a story loosely based on several actual events at the end of the War Between the States in the border state region. An intersting bit of trivia: In Germany, this movie is titled "Der Texaner", which is completely confusing. It's also rated as restricted to those over 16 due to sex, violence, and language. This is often mentioned as one of Clint Eastwood's finest movies. My specific interest in this is due to my gggrandmother's brother (Bob Lee) who is mentioned in this movie and was noted in history as the last Confederate hold-out in Texas, which caused the American Civil war to continue until 1866 in Texas. The buyer should note that this NTSC VHS is the 1998 issue.
This is a rough and tumble western/Civil War film - sections of the film get seedy at times and are unneedful and not to be expected in a PG rated film. This is not one to be watched by the family.
Clint did an outstanding job as director and acting. It sure beats those horiable spegetti westerns he use to make. In the story he beat all the odds. More was thrown on him then on a dozen men and he came out ahead. Loved it. My favorite scene was when Josey Whales met Ten Bears. I found it hard to rent in the DV so I bought it VHS.
