This is truly one of the very best baseball movies ever made. Robert Redford makes Roy Hobbs everything he should be. From beginning to end this movie inspires and demostrates what life could have been for a baseball player had it not been for the act of one single deranged fan. This movie is based on the life of Eddie Waitkus (www.waitkus.org) and how a single fan change the player and the man. If you have the opportunity to see this movie....take it. You will not be disappointed. FIVE STAR MOVIE !

  Just Another Unnecessary Director's Cut
Review created: 04/17/07(updated 04/21/07)

Is is just me or does anyone else feel that not every movie needs to be revisited for a Director's Cut? When 'Director's Cuts' first started appearing in the mid-1990's (the most popular probably being Ridley Scott's disaster of a project 'Blade Runner'), I wasn't quite sure what to think...I thought it was interesting to see the extra footage and new scenes, but at the same time I noticed a feeling of disappointment...I felt that the movie was being damaged, as if the director and other filmmakers weren't satisfied with their original cut, the cut that we all grew to love in the first place (otherwise we wouldn't have even bothered with the director's cut, right?)...Well, the bottom line is that 'The Natural: Director's Cut' is just another unnecessary re-edit of a film that was perfect the first time around and it's a shame that someone even felt that this movie needed to be re-done to impress its loyal fans...

As for the quality of the dvd, Let me just say that the bonus features on the second disc are the perk of the package...I wish I could speak highly of the new high-def transfer and upgraded sound, but over the past few years I've just become frustrated with the visual and audio remastering on dvd's that has given us a much different presentation than what we remember on the big screen...High-def transfers are clear, sure...but they are usually almost always overdone, and the new transfer on 'The Natural: Director's Cut' is no exception...it seems that the shading and lighting I remember seeing originally are sacrificed all for the sake of being able to see a pimple on someones face that you couldn't originally...I don't get it...As for the audio, the new 5.1 track is definitely louder than on the original dvd, but again, it seems in some scenes, like the scene where Roy Hobbs hits the home run at Wrigley Field and shatters the scoreboard clock, that some sound effects have actually been 'added' into the mix, which is again frustrating and a slap in the face to the original mix...

Overall, I wouldn't bother spending $20 on this dvd...If you have the original version already, you've got all that you need...I will actually admit that this new version will probably hurt your opinion of the film, an all too common problem with all the recent 'unrated cuts' and 'director's cuts' flooding the market...Let me just say that I'm sure every director who ever made a film wishes he could go back and change things, or that he had more time to do this or that, but things happen for a reason, and finishing a film within the budget and time constraints given by a studio are part of the creative movie making process, and lets leave it at that...I wish dvd production companies and their fathering film studios could keep the deleted scenes and other stuff that didn't make it into the film where they belong (in the bonus features section), and save the high-def transfers and hoaky audio remixes for those who want to waste their money on HD-DVD or BLUE RAY disc systems...But Hollywood, please leave films like 'The Natural', that were perfect the first time around, alone...

The Natural - Every Man Has a Weakness
Review created: 03/15/05
by: AliventiAsylum-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
beautiful cinematography, excellent cast and performances, good story

Cons:
Redford really a little too old for this role

Ah yes, it s that time of year when hope springs eternal: spring training. What better way to get myself motivated for the next season of baseball than to take in a flick that s always been one of my favorites: The Natural. There are things in life that are good for us and things that are bad. In between are the choices we make. Every man has a weakness, and Roy Hobbs is women. From his childhood sweetheart, Iris, to the mysterious siren who shoots him, to the seductress Memo Paris who tempts him and almost manages to thwart a legendary comeback. As the film opens, a young Roy Hobbs is...

The Natural: "You've got a gift, Roy... but it's not enough."

Pros:
Excellent baseball scenes and an important social commentary on the price of success.

Cons:
Sometimes slowly paced and hard to follow.

Father s Day, 2001. I am in cinematic heaven on this cool, overcast coastal Maine Sunday morning. I ve just finished watching the DVD version of The Natural, which I received as a Father s Day gift from one of my kids. What a way to begin a Sunday...great weather, a loving family, and a wonderful movie! A wonderful baseball movie on top of everything else! To say the least, I am a rabid baseball fan. I love the Boston Red Sox and the Portland Sea Dogs (the Florida Marlins Double-A team). I love reading books about baseball, and I especially love baseball movies. Among baseball movies, my...

Redford Is Natural, But The Story Ultimately Strikes Out
Review created: 09/11/04
by: Joubert -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Outstanding cast, great settings....

Cons:
...don't rescue the schmaltz and inconsistent plot from striking out

An incredible cast allows Barry Levinson s The Natural to shine far beyond the schmaltz, formula and inconsistencies that ruin so many sports movies. Much of that success is due to Levinson s beautiful directing, but the cast headlined by Robert Redford, also deserves many kudos. This is a film baseball fans will want to watch, but those who like a nice love story as a side plot will also enjoy the film. Filmed in 1984 when novelist Bernard Malamud was 70, The Natural reaches back to the glory days of baseball when it truly was America s pastime. Not having read Malamud s original book, I...

"The Natural" -- it's not lousy
Review created: 03/08/03
by: HawgWyld -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A great baseball film which isn't really about the game

Cons:
Not for impatient types

A few years ago, ESPN ran some ads for its coverage of baseball games. The ads featured an actor portraying Ty Cobb and drawling through some of the Georgia Peach's more memorable quotes. It's my understanding the quotes came from Cobb, at least. Hell, they sure sound like things that insane Cobb fellow might say. Here they are: The world is lousy. No good. But, basebawww is not lousy. A lot of people don't like me, but I don't care about that one whit. No, sir! All I care about is basebawww. What's the point of all this? Well, I merely mention those quotes because I find Cobb to be a...

The Natural --- Starring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, and Kim Basinger
Review created: 02/27/06
by: three_ster-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
great cinematography, very strong story, superb acting, best baseball movie ever.

Cons:
none

There are arguably only a handful of films that are categorized as the best baseball films of all time. Depending on who you are, the top of the list will include Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, and The Natural. It is my humble opinion that The Natural is at the top of that list, and though the other two were really well made movies, there are things that set it apart in my opinion. The Natural came out back in 1984, and was directed by Barry Levinson. At the time, he was not very well known, and really hadn't proven himself in Hollywood. He later directed films such as Rain Man, Good Morning,..
