  Hard to believe.

Based on a true story of young Irish girls deemed sinful sent to convent/prison type establishments in Ireland where they are exploited and abused. Another reason to become jaded with the Catholic church. Well acted and disturbing. The smiling face on the DVD box is very misleading...this is a serious drama and a dark time in Ireland's past. Highly recommended.

  Great Movie

This movie is based on true events, and given that it happened so recently, it's trully amazing that this could have happened to these women. It goes to show you what blind faith and overly religious people ignorant people can do when they don't question anything.

  Get it.

This moving is definetly interesting! The fact that it's based on true stories of these "sisters". It's depressing and humorous at the same time (in different situations). The Magdalene Sisters really make you think! I bought it because I saw it on TV (IFC) and had to watch it again with friends.

The Magdalene Sisters - An Asylum is A Prison is A Nightmare
Review created: 05/13/04

Pros:
A powerful story well told

Cons:
Not really

You don t hear the term Women s Lib much anymore. Opportunities and choices have expanded greatly for women in this country in the past fifty years and with progress, sometimes, comes apathy. We forget our past and take our future (and that of our daughters) for granted. This is a mistake, for we are only as strong as we are vigilant. Historically, women are the largest, most persistently and relentlessly persecuted group of people to ever exist. Almost no society is exempt from a past of barbaric oppression of half its population. Women have been treated as chattel, blamed for the ills of...

The Magdalene Sisters -- No Sibling Rivalry, Just an Amazing Story.

Pros:
excellent acting, brilliant visuals; a top-notch film.

Cons:
the sinking feeling in your stomach from knowing such places existed.

Margaret, while at a family member's wedding, is raped by her cousin. Bernadette, who is living in an orphanage, loves getting the attention of the boys passing by the courtyard. Rose, finds herself giving birth to a healthy son, much to her parents' dismay. The shame of those around them leads all three of them to be sent to the Magdalene Asylum, a Catholic-run "refuge" for those whose sins had shunned them from the outside world. The story follows the lives of these three girls (amongst others) as they try to adapt to their new lifestyle. All day is spent in a hot and humid room, scrubbing..

  Pray For The Sinners

Pros:
Disturbing and detailed movie about an infamous situation

Cons:
Very bleak and a bit too negative about nuns and priests

American Catholics, especially those who were raised in the Church after World War II, have talked about their experiences in that religion, and look back upon this upbringing with insight and humor. The Irish girls of "The Magdalene Sisters" lived a far more harrowing existence than any American Catholic - and there's no doubt that these girls were punished by the Church and by society far too harshly. The story focuses on three girls who were sent there in mid-sixties Dublin for various "offenses." Margaret (Ann-Marie Duff) is sent there by her father after she is raped by a cousin. The...

The Magdalene Sisters: arguing for the separation of Church and State
Review created: 05/13/04
by: telynor-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Excellent acting, settings of a system that broke down, but also hid the perpetrators.

Cons:
Very violent, very graphic.

I first encountered news of the Magdalene Asylums as part of a throwaway line in another film, where an Irish father bitterly states that he fears that his daughter will end up with the Magdalenes. After viewing this film, I can easily see why there's still continuing abuse in some sectors of the Catholic church. Set in the mid-1960's, we follow the stories of four young women who are caught up in the system, in a country that makes no allowances for unwed mothers, victims of rape, or even those who did nothing wrong, but were 'suspected' of immoral behavior. Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff) is at..

Slutty Girls go to Hell or the Magdalene Asylum
Review created: 05/30/04
by: CyndiA -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Powerful story that needed to be told.

Cons:
Heavy. Not for a light evening.

Margaret is raped by her cousin during a family gathering. Rose has a baby out of wedlock. Bernadette is a flirt and way too pretty for her own good. The cure for these sinners is the Magdalene Asylum for wayward women. It s hard to believe that such a place ever existed, but this movie (The Magdalene Sisters) is based on a documentary aired in Ireland and includes interviews with women who survived the asylum and stepped forward to tell the stories (check out Sin in a Cold Climate on the DVD). These women reflect a sample of the abuse suffered by as many as 30,000 girls in Ireland. An exact..
