"The Longest Day" is fairly massive production and very sweeping in its' tale. It's the true story of the events surrounding the 6 June 1944 Allied invasion of Normandy, France. If you pay close attention, you'll be amazed how many stars and future-stars are in this film as leads, seconds, and extras. Definately belongs in the DVD film library of all historians and militaria collectors. This version is in the North American DVD Format and was issued in 1999. Not recommended for children due to the graphic nature of warfare. My reviews are provided with no knowledge of the potential seller.

Lest We Forget: The Longest Day

Pros:
Story, Direction, Photography, Acting

Cons:
None

This excellent movie gives the big picture about the D-Day Invasion ( Operation Overlord ) of June 6, 1944, a task that involved some 3.5 million men, 2/3 of whom were American. Unlike more recent pictures about D-Day, like Saving Private Ryan, also excellent, which give a micro view of the largest invasion in history, The Longest Day gives a macro view, showing the massive preparations and logistical nightmares on both sides of the English Channel. But there is more; The Longest Day also shows the horror of the invasion from the point of view of the individual soldier, sailor, and airman,...

Classic despite flaws, The Longest Day is still relevant and powerful even after 40 years

Pros:
Great cast, well-made, as reasonably accurate as Hollywood can make a historic epic

Cons:
Some of the casting is off. Most actors pull the illusion of being soldiers...but....

The Longest Day, Darryl F. Zanuck's ambitious and expensive recreation of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy, is one of the best -- if somewhat flawed -- war films ever made. Boasting an all-star cast of 41 "A-List" (for 1962, that is) actors from four countries and filmed in various locations around France (Corsica doubling for most of the five invasion beaches on northern France) and made with the assistance of NATO's armed forces, The Longest Day was, for 31 years, the most expensive movie ever shot in black and white. It was also, in some ways, a major roll of the movie-making..

How can it be "too long," and not long enough?

Pros:
They fought for Freedom and brought Liberation to captive peoples.

Cons:
They died for Freedom and to bring Liberation to captive peoples.

I hear all sorts of comparisons between The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan, but they all miss the comparisons that really count. SPR is fiction, despite claims of being based on a (a = one = single) real event. In comparison, The Longest Day is actual history, recreated in Black and White to show what really happened. SPR is more real because it shows the blood of men being shot, and shows it in color while there isn't enough gore in The Longest Day. My own reaction? How many men have you shot or, even better, how many times have you been shot yourself? As a voice of experience,...

  The Greatest Battle

Pros:
Outstanding history, well told

Cons:
Not a one.

It became popular to knock earlier war films, such as The Longest Day after the bloody battle depictions of Saving Private Ryan caught everyone s attention. There s no comparing the two, however. They are both in their own league, separated by more than 35 years of technology. The point of "The Longest Day" is to tell the story of the June 6, 1944 invasion and its immediate aftermath. The point of "Ryan" is to tell the story of heartrending loss and salvation; the beach carnage, though well told, is not really the main point. The two films have different goals and are playing to a world with.

One of the Best D-Day Invasion Film!
Review created: 04/25/02
by: luw718 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Historically accurate, suspenseful, and informational D-Day invasion film!

Cons:
Lacking in special effects, but very good for its time. Glorified war film.

The Longest Day, based on Cornelius Ryan s book of the same title, is a brilliant rendition of the famous D-Day invasion of Normandy. The film is extremely accurate, depicting the perspectives of all sides of the war involved in the event: the Americans, the British, the French, and the Germans. Multiple viewpoints give the film an objective feel, as opposed to the over-glorified subjective views of most other war films. Although The Longest Day somewhat lacks character development and the typical movie plot that follows the plight of the hero , it still manages to enrapture the viewer into...
