I mainly bought this CD for the song they do with Sinead O'Connor (The Foggy Dew),and was pleasantly surprised to find many others great songs.

Left me wanting a volume 2!

One of the sweetest little CDs I have ever had. The Chieftains have long been a favorite group with me, and I was not sure how I'd like the "guests" CD, but I LOVE IT. The guests seem to inspire much variety and feeling in the Chieftains. I wish there would be a volume II...

The Long Black Veil: Ancient Irish music and rock and roll have a child
Review created: 08/16/01

Pros:
Fun, not at all serious, and a very eclectic mix of music and musicians.

Cons:
Some very strange selections

There are Irish bands, and then there are the Chieftains. Long a mainstay of folk culture, and wonderful performers to boot, the Chieftains have been exposing the rest of the world to the marvelous rhythms and beat of traditional Irish music. Their renditions of Irish ballads, reels, chants, and jigs are infectious, fun, sometimes makes you laugh, sometimes cry, and never fail to move the heart and soul. Done partially as a tribute album, and as a compilation, the Chieftains got a few of their friends over for a jam session, with musicians the likes of: the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Sting.

 The Veil Was Lifted
Review created: 08/26/02

Pros:
Excellent variety of guest singers, great sound, great Chieftain quality

Cons:
Not for everyone, very different.

I have always had trouble writing music ops. I find it very difficult in transferring one medium (music) into another (writing). But I thought I would give it a stab with one of my all time favorite albums. Long Black Veil by the Chieftains is probably one of my top ten favorite s albums of all time. Now, I will admit that it is not popular music, nor it is it for everyone. Many people would find it an odd choice. Irish music isn t for everyone. However, I think this album may have more general appeal than the other albums by the Chieftains. Why would I think that? Because this album isn t...

This is MY Soul Music, and I'm proud of it!

Pros:
They are infinite

Cons:
They are non-existent

Only the most musically naive could live in this world without having heard of The Chieftains. They are the top drawer among Celtic Groups, and have been touring the world with their music for nearly fifty (50) years! Aye, Boy-o and Lassie, these lads began with darkly fuzzy cheeks and still continue with white-grizzled chins. What hasn't changed is their music and their Gaelic zest for life. Let's face it, they're Irishmen one and all, and prototype Irishmen at that. By that I mean that for them life and music are synonymous, humor lives in every breath they draw, they will never grow too...

 The Irish Craze?
Review created: 10/25/99
by: criener -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
accesible compendium of pop stars signing Irish folk songs

Cons:
none

In the interest of full disclosure, I am of Irish heritage, and yes, I can enjoy a good jig or reel every now and then. But like everyone I am a bit mystified by the current trend of popularity of Riverdance and Irish culture in general. The Chieftains, however, have been popularizing Irish music and culture for decades, and this album is one of their finest acheivements. Unlike many compilation albums with lots of guest artists, this album is tied together well by the choices of excellent Irish folk songs. It begins with a haunting ghost story (the title song) sung by none other than Mick...

Very cool tunes - check it out!

Pros:
beautiful Celtic music, great cameo guests (like Sting!)

Cons:
none

I like a little of the weird. I get tired of the same old grind. And if that describes you too, you should definitely give the Chieftains a try. And if you are going to try out the Chieftains for the very first time, then the Long Black Veil is definitely the place to start (in my opinion of course). Beautiful music, mixed in with names you'll recognize (like Sting for example). If you've never tried Celtic music, this is a brilliant introduction to the genre. Try it out. I don't think you'll regret it. I listen to this CD pretty often. The Chieftains are definitely on the list of my favorite.
