I've read articles done by Ernie Conover before and thought I'd take a chance on this book. I was certainly not disappointed! Although touching on the fundamentals of the lathe, tools and accessories, this book will be most useful to mid-level turners looking for information and techniques to improve their skills. Covers just about every way imaginable to hold your work on the lathe, includes basic explanations of how to fine tune your tools, and even some ideas for making your own accessories. Well written and easy to follow.
I have not turned wood before although I have been woodworking for many years. I bought a midi 10" Cast Iron Wood Lathe from Grizzly Tools and thought I'd better get some expert advice about lathes.
Conover's book takes you through the complete cycle of lathe types, tools needed, how to sharpen (Very Important since the tools I bought were sharp but not sharp enough). Also techniques, tips and warnings necessary to safely delve into your new machine and hobby.
In addition I bought a DVD from Rockler's of basic lathe work and tool usage. A necessity I think unless you have an experienced woodturner to walk you through the correct and dangerous ways to handle your tools.
