"There is no doubt that the 1992 boxed set 'The King Of Rock 'N Roll: The Complete 50's Masters' by Elvis Presley is, without question, the greatest album that has ever been released. The extraordinary collection on 5 cassettes or 5 CDs represents the best and most creative period in American popular music. Elvis was, and always will be, the greatest entertainer in the history of entertainment. The 140 tracks contained within this set include his classic tracks from Sun Records, the 4 Gospel songs, the 8 Christmas songs, all the recordings from his 4 movies released during the 50's, and other outstanding studio recordings. The 5th tape/disc in this set features a wonderful selection of 26 tracks of rare titles, 14 of which were previously unissued, prior to the release of this set. It also features alternate takes of songs from his 4 films, and his live 1956 performance from the New Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to the great musical recordings, there is also a unique and previously unreleased press interview with Elvis that took place on the day he set sail for Germany to begin his 2-year stint in the Army. This set also features a wonderfully assembled book with a great assortment of photographs and terrific liner notes annotated by Colin Escott. As an added bonus, there is also a collector's sheet of stamps that are perfect replicas of Elvis's single, EP and album covers from the 1950's that were provided courtesy of Mr. Paul Dowling. All-in-all, this boxed set is not only the best Elvis album of all time, but is, as far as I am concerned, the greatest album ever released. You can't find a better collection of music than right here. This is one album that you will not be disappointed with. There are no filler tracks; every track in this album is a standout performance from Elvis. This set proves, once and for all, that he always will continue to be the undisputed King of Rock and Roll; bar none!"

Well, what can I say... This is THE ultimate Elvis collection of the 50's. Has all, and I mean all, official rerleases from the 50's. There are also some extra special songs for us collectors.
If you like Elvis Presley in the 50's, this is the ONLY set you'll ever need. Buy it, and forget all other compilations with 50's songs. This is it!

A comprehesive collection of the King's best work!!!
Review created: 03/10/08

This is a very solid collection of Elvis' early recordings: must for an Elvis fan and perhaps the best option to check out if you are only discovering The King. To listen to all CDs in their entirety, it to follow an amazing journey: from the early, rusty Sun Records ("Maybelline", "Harbor Lights") records to the first huge hits (Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog) and on to the King's first movies ("Love me Tender", "Loving You", "King Creole", and "Jailhouse Rock"). The music is amazing; some of his best work is on those records. Some would say it was his absolute peak. Early recordings may not have perfect quality, there is scratching, and the voice clearly belongs to a boy. But those early songs possess incredible charm and freshness that must have been mind-blowing to the listeners at the time. His take on old country standards ("Your Cheatin' Heart") is so novel and exciting that even today, the recordings should be appreciated. There is so much sheer talent in those works that it comes as no surprise when we hear his first RCA recordings that one after another huge hits. He matures, learns, improves his technique, and always manages to sound 100% sincere and authentic, whether he is singing about an old family pet ("Old Shep") or does a cover of Fats Domino "Blueberry Hill". Movie soundtracks deserve their own reviews, but I would like to emphasize the excellent "King Creole" (Title song, "Trouble", "New Orleans", "Danny" and very good "Jailhouse Rock" (title song, "Young and Beautiful", "Baby I don't care"). The collection also features a great lineup of Christmas songs from great standards like "White Christmas" and "Silent Night" to almost naughty "Santa Claus is back in Town".
Fifth disc introduces up to some live performances and an interview given shortly before Presley's departure to the US army. As John Lennon once famously said:"[Elvis] died when he went into the army. That's when they killed him, that's when they castrated him. ..." One may disagree with the harsh words, but they certainly possess a grain of truth. Elvis has made many wonderful recordings upon his return in '60 and continued to work practically until his death in '77, but there is no doubt that the freshness and originality, raw talent, and groundbreaking new sound were all but gone when he resumed his recording career.

If you're an Elvis fan, you'll want to add this to your collection. As expected, it has all the classic 50's hits (Don't Be Cruel, Hound Dog, etc.), but it is more worth having for the not-so-well-known hits (I Got Stung, A Big Hunk o' Love, Ain't That Loving You Baby, etc.) and the soundtrack songs from his 4 50's movies that don't usually show up on compilation albums. There are quite a few songs that I'd never heard before and some that I've rarely heard. There are beautiful ballads like First in Line and energetic songs like Paralyzed and Rip It Up. I bought it primarily to add new songs to my collection, but I found myself listening to some songs over and over. I think Elvis's voice got better and smoother over time, but there is a youthful vitality to many of these songs that make the Elvis of the 50's very appealing. If you love Elvis or the sound of 50's music, I'd recommend this set.

How the King Began - The Fifties Complete
Review created: 09/12/06

Pros:
The Definitive Work. All known masters and tapes are here

Cons:
None unless you dislike Elvis

My first reaction to Elvis was irritation as his single release of Blue Suede Shoes knocked both Carl Perkins original recording of it and my friend Gene Vincent s single off the charts. But since this was the fifties, I was a teenager, and was active at a top-40 radio station (as an engineer and occasional DJ) I grew to love the music of Elvis. I actually got to meet him in Nashville in the spring of 1957. He was at a casual gathering of people at the home studio of Chet Atkins, then Vice-president at the Nashville branch of RCA. I got to watch as Carl Perkins teased this shy young man about.

Rockin' in the '50s with Elvis Presley

Pros:
almost everything Elvis recorded in the 1950's

Cons:
expensive

The King of Rock 'N' Roll : The Complete 50's Masters is the first and best of three 5 CD sets of Elvis Presley's RCA recorded output. It is also the most complete, as the '60s and '70s sets trim away the fat that literally and figuratively plagued Elvis in his last 15 years. A beautiful booklet full of pictures, essays, and annotated discography complements the discs. The first four discs are devoted to Elvis' master takes, arranged chronologically. Which means the set actually opens with Elvis' country-blues and rural rock n' roll cuts commonly known as the Sun Records recordings, a...

For Elvis Freaks and Music Geeks Only

Pros:
Definitive Elvis from the 50's, contains all his Sun Studios recordings, demonstrates Presley's versatility from blues to pop-rock to gospel and spiritual, contains rare and previously unreleased material, has great historical booklet with the 5 disc set.

Cons:
Pricey

Whether you love Elvis or dislike him, there is no denying his place in rock and roll history. While he had almost become a caricature of himself at the end, bloated by drugs and horrible eating habits, sometimes forgetting the lyrics to his songs, it was a major shock when the King suddenly passed away. I ll always remember that day because it coincided with the very day that I moved into a small Navajo reservation town August 16, 1977. To memorialize that day, Elvis fan Dainon Moody (Gr8dane) has organized an all things Elvis write off. Some other fine writers have joined this occasion, so..

 Disc Four (1957-1958)
Review created: 04/11/00
by: BrianKoller -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
some of the songs are among his best

Cons:
'King Creole' sessions, lengthy interview

In 1992, RCA released a five CD box set of Elvis Presley. The CDs contained all of Elvis' surviving masters from the 1950s, plus some rarities, such as acetates and alternative takes. There's too much material for a single review, so I am writing a separate review for each CD. The fourth CD is the weakest of the five. While it contains several great songs, it also has many lesser recordings from his fourth film, "King Creole". The post-draft session has Elvis in great spirits, but perhaps too loose. The CD is closed with a lengthy interview. All begins well with 'Treat Me Nice'. Elvis in...

 Disc Three (1957)
Review created: 04/09/00
by: BrianKoller -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
vocals, arrangements, song selection

Cons:
sometimes inconsistent or uninspired

In 1992, RCA released a five CD box set of Elvis Presley. It contained all of his masters from the 1950s, as well as some rare interviews, outtakes, live recordings, demos and acetates. With well over a hundred songs in the box set, I am writing a separate review for each CD. The third CD covers 1957. By this time, Elvis was the king of Rock and Roll, and was consolidating his hold on the pop charts while building his film career. 'That's When Your Heartaches Begin' would become the weakest song on his 'Golden Records' greatest hits album. The impossibly melodramatic lyrics are combined with..
