Dodie Smith's “Hundred and One Dalmatians” contains mystery, comedy, love and adventure all within its covers. There are no main characters in this story; it is truly an ensemble cast. Taking place in London and throughout the English countryside, “Dalmatians” never slows down and keeps you turning pages to find out what's around the next bend.
Roger and Anita are two single adults brought together by their Dalmatians Pongo and Perdita. Love blossoms, both couples exchange their vows and settle in for a normal married life. But not quite.
Perdita gives birth to 15 puppies which fills the two-story flat with the pitter patter of furry little feet. Trouble starts brewing with the visit of Anita's old college chum Cruella DeVil, who is obsessively in love with exotic fur coats and will do ANYTHING to acquire the fur to make one. She offers to buy all the pups, but is refused. One stormy night the pups are mysteriously kidnapped while Roger, Anita and the Pongos are out walking. To find out the rest, you'll have to buy your own copy of the book!
I have to admit to being a 101 Dalmatians fan since childhood. So reviewing this book wasn't difficult. Of course I grew up on the Disney Animated version. But the book does not disappoint! The same loveable characters are there including, Colonel, Major and the ever pleasing Sgt. Tibbs. If you are not familiar with "Dalmatians", but are an animal lover, this book is also for you. Dodie Smith keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. And you won't want to put it down until it's done. So, get the book, curl up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate, and get transported to Jolly Old England and the home of Hundred and One Dalmatians.
