IT'S AN AVERAGE MOVIE FROM THE BEGGINING...

I first watch this movie in the theather with my buddies when it first came out and, I wasn't really impress; it was actually kind of dissaponting. Then one day my fiancee told me she hasn't seen it and on a bargain we bought the special edition DVD set. We finished watching it in 3 sittings because the movie is really slow and lacks the spirit to draw you in. The directors does a great job with the editing and the sound of the DVD but the direction and the story of the movie didn't help very much. The CGI Hulk transform in sizes all the time wich was kind of weird. This is something that "mostly" Hulk fans will enjoy. I have read the comics in the past and they are as slow as this movie.

This movie is clearly just "plain old average". It's a movie that I believe people want to really like. The main character, The Hulk is one that most comic book fans really want to see do well on the big screen. But really, the acting is average, the story line is average and the directing is average. If they could "re-imagine" this script, it could be very good because the CGI of the Hulk is actually outstanding. The Hulk graphics are excellent. Excellent!! But the villians are campy, and boring--not scary. The Hulk is cool. Compared to X-Men, Spiderman and even The Fantastic 4, and the older Christopher Reeves Superman, this doesn't hold up. Its much comparable to Superman Returns in the respect that fans wanted it to be much better than the end results turned out. Better luck next time.

  My Hulk Review
Review created: 08/12/08

So after being sorely disappointed by the new Hulk I went back to watch this one and honestly even though it drags a bit in my opinion it's the better overall film. Eric Bana fit the Bruce Banner character much better than Edward Norton. I'm a big fan of Norton too and really wanted the new Hulk to be great but it was mediocre at best. This film catches more of the drama of being the hulk and I felt for the characters more where in the new version I didn't care for any of them.

First thing first,I wish this would have been a great film being a huge Incredible Hulk fan,but what do you expect when you put a no name actor with marginal talent like Eric Bana and a director like Ang Lee that does period pieces like Sense and Sensibility which was a good film. Hollywood should never ever let this guy make another comic book movie. It is obvious the guy had no clue what he was doing. The hulk didn't even look like the hulk. He was way too big. I thought he was supposed be about 8ft. tall. They had hulk way too big. The plot was extremely stupid and boring. Why did Jennifer Connely lower herself to work with Eric Bana? My recommendation is that they burn all copies of this film and pretend it never existed. I recommend seeing the new Hulk with Edward Norton. Now there is great casting. I could see renting it,but don't buy this garbage.

I thought it would be better. I mean it was good, but I like the cartoon Hulk better. The acting was alright. I bought the movie because it was cheap and I've never seen it before. So I wanted to check it out.

This movie gets a bad rap. It isn't the greatest, but it's definately worth a few views and at the low prices that you can get it on ebay it's a steal.

I bought this movie because of it's entertainment qualities for the whole family. There mild violence, no nudity and clean language. I also like showing my kids movies that I had to read about in comic books.

I won another auction from this seller so I looked at the sellers other items before I checked out. It was a really low price and I have kids who would like to have that video. We saw parts of that movie but missed most of it...Dumb luck and great price...The movie is great for the children. They enjoyed it, but the beginning of the movie was a bit slow. These kids nowadays need action from first second to the last...Hollywood..

There isn’t a lot of cinematic material to work with...
Review created: 12/24/07
by:

Not too far removed from his success with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Brokeback Mountain) couldn’t have chosen a more difficult undertaking than 2003’s box office disappointment—(based on how much they actually spent to make this film) The Hulk.

Seriously, there really isn’t a lot of cinematic material to work with when it comes to a character such as The Hulk that usually focuses on the most basic tenets of needs such as: anger, safety, love, and fear. In addition, the concept of being gifted with seemingly unearthly strength but at the same time cursed with intelligence so feeble is sure to glue patrons of all ages in their seats.

However, Lee may have taken this as a challenge and shook things up by doing away with The Hulk’s crude comic origins (that of Bruce Banner being belted by gamarays while attempting to save the life of civilian Rick Jones) in lieu of a more modern approach with elements such as genetic experimentation, gamarays and nanomites, domestic violence, and repressed emotions that combine to bring this cinematic and computer generated version of Marvel’s dark-haired green goliath to life.

I don’t buy it.

Green is still Green, whichever way you look at it.

  Hulk [2003]
Review created: 11/04/07

Flawed. This is the key word used by critics to describe HULK after its initial cinematic release. I think, in general, the fans were happy with the film. I'm going to go with 'very good'.

Synopsis:

~ David Banner is a scientist working on human DNA. After the birth of his son, Bruce [Eric Bana], he becomes concerned, the child being quiet and withdrawn. The child only shows emotion when he is angry, his skin tinged with splotches of green during these moments of rage. Banner disbands his research after attempting to find a cure for his son. He causes an explosion at the research center, accidentally killing his wife, and is subsequently condemned to a mental institution. Bruce is put into the care of foster parents.

Twenty years later Bruce Krenzler [Banner] is a successful scientist like his father. David Banner [Nick Nolte] returns, working as a janitor in the research center, watchful of his son as history seems to be repeating itself. Betty Ross [Jennifer Connelly] is the ex-girlfriend of Bruce and daughter of Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross [Sam Elliott], the military commander who originally shut down David Banner's research. Ross is concerned that his daughter is working with Bruce, chiefly because Bruce is conducting similar experiments to those of his father. An accident in the lab results in Bruce being hit with large amounts of gamma radiation, which mixes with his already altered DNA. Enter the Hulk ~

Ang Lee's effort, I think, comes close to the original Marvel comic book created by [Stan Lee] and [Jack Kirby], especially with the use of picture-in-picture multiple scene framing. The juxtaposition - and movement of - these frames on screen is effective in that the viewer could be simultaneously watching a film and reading a comic book. A radiant score by [Danny Elfman] compliments the picture, the composer seemingly discarding his dreamy - almost whimsical - melodies like those found in films like 'Edward Scissorhands' and 'Batman'. The idea of science and experimentation is conveyed with this 'new' almost off-beat electronic Elfman music while the tense scenes are punctuated by brass instruments; the stark sequences - the arid desert and the military base - enhanced with Middle Eastern vocal interludes.

Lee has kept the storyline - the origin of the Hulk - along with the imagery - close to the pulp comic book whilst injecting his own style, drawing influences from Greek mythology and texts like 'Frankenstein' 'King Kong' and 'Beauty and the Beast'. The storyline running alongside this is the unstable relationship Bruce and Betty have with their fathers. This is not just a rampaging monster movie, but a film with depth and heart.

What keeps 'Hulk' from being a five-star film is the effects used to create the Hulk. He is a computer-generated monster who could be just as comfortable on a Playstation or X-Box machine. Granted the effects are impressive when compared to the 1970s 'Bill Bixby' Hulk, but perhaps a little too impressive.

Of particular importance - and what many critics have missed - is that Lee has captured the essence of who [or what] the Hulk is with the proficiency of a well-established director. The Hulk is neither hero or villain; rather, he is a tortured soul wandering the land in search of solitude ... and Betty Ross, of course.

Lou Ferrigno [Hulk in the TV series] and Stan 'the man' Lee both have cameos in the movie as security guards.

The movie was not based on the comic book. I have several issues of the Hulk, and none of them show the Hulk getting bigger as he gets angier. The only reason I got the DVD was to add to my collection of comic book movies, and my kids like the movie. Ang Lee may have killed the franchise with this movie.

For starters, the cinematography totally sucks! It hurts your eyes throughout the whole movie trying to pan across the screen at all the shaped scenes. It was like pic-in-pic-in-pic-in-pic-in-pic. I have no idea what happened at the end with the father. Did he become the Absorbing Man? Did he perish? This movie seemed to detract from the comic too much. Do not rent and simply watch on TV.

I really enjoyed this movie.

I heard some bad reviews about the movie, so, three years later, it took finding it in the "cheap" bin at Wal-Mart to spark my interest.

I don't understand why it got bad reviews. According to what I heard, it hardly had a story and it was just a bunch of the Hulk destroying things. -- So untrue!

I really enjoyed the story, and that it kept some comic book feel.

A+
