The classic BBC TV miniseries all on one DVD, plus extra features like the "making of" documentary, make this a must have for fans of Douglas Adams, the author (who appears in a few scenes). It also stars Marvin the Paranoid Android, whose hilarious part was severely diminished in the 2005 motion picture. Although the special effects of this original TV series are not up to modern day standards, this production has more charm and character than the glitzy recent update, and follows the books more closely.
This was the original filming of this great story by Douglas Adams. Even though the special effects were from the low-budget 70's, it is still a classic for any true science fiction fan.
Ah the 70's creative mind and the UK (sigh...). This visual adaptation of the genius level books effectively gets you back to that spacetime continuum authentically as the present day movie with it's, I suppose appropriate present day compromises, fails to. I'll say it's different now. DVD's -- spacetime machines!
The BBC version is far more faithful to the Douglas Adams book than the newest version. The only downside is that it ends with Life, the Universe and Everything. Concidering it was made in the early 1980's and on a very small budget, it has none of the Hollywood special effects. Overall, I gave it a solid B whereas the newest version, I gave a C-.
