This was a really great read. I found it most interesting and could hardly put it down. I read it in just over 2 days. It is amazing how these children brought themselves out of starvation to become outstanding adults. It was unbeleivable the things their parents put them through, especially when they didn't have to. I think their mom was a little nuts but all of them turned out ok. This is one ot those books that I am glad that I bought so I can have an opertunity to read it again in a year or so. There are 3 people in line to borrow it already.
This book was incredible. I started it and couldn't put it down. It was hard to believe it was a true story. It was interesting to read about the author's relationship with her parents, and how eccentric her parents were. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great thought provoking book.
I loved this book! A friend had recommended it to me and in her description I wondered why I would want to read a book about such a disfunctional family. I listened to the book-on-tape, which I enjoyed more than reading it. I feel I got more out of it by listening; it was a really good reader.
After listening to the book, I have purchased three more on eBay for friends who hesitated to get the book but after sending them a book they did read it and thanked me very much. The story is gripping. A book you don't want to put down... when it ended I didnt' want it to end. Early on I realized I had seen the author interviewed by Diane Sawyer and remembered a great deal of that show. Now I am trying to find out if it would be possible to see that interview once again. Jeannette Walls is one remarkable woman as she was a child. Even tho the family was so disfunctional, they had such a deep love for each other. They were all brilliant people yet your heart went out to them because the parents just didn't know how to manage their lives or their children's lives. Yet, the children grew up with some wonderful knowledge that they would not have gotten had they been in a wealthy (monetary) family. I rate this book the highest!!
This is an amazing story, told with a forgiving heart and amazing insight. The author starts her memoirs from the perspective of a child, and continues to develop it as she gains maturity.
The item arrived on time and was in the condition described. I would definitely buy from this seller again. The transaction was smooth and easy. Would recommend this seller to anyone.
A friend recommended the book about a dysfunctional family. Just shows that people can come out of something like this stronger and wiser. Even though it was dysfunctional, there was a lot of love in the family.
I had a difficult time putting the book down. Wanted to read it all the way through to see what happened to each individual family member.
I would definitely read other books by the author. Great writer
Fairly quick read. Amazing story and shocking that it is someone's real life experience. Shows the ability of the human spirit to survive amazing obstacles and make great strides in life. Shows the how the love of a parent doesn't always equal good decisions for their children. Read this for my book club and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Bought this book for a Senior Life Long Learning Program Book Club at Marywood University. A work of non-fiction chronicling the extraordinary survival of a child growing up with an eccentric alcoholic father and a strange artistic mother who wound up happy as homeless people in New York City. Amazing and well written, Jeanette Walls succeeds in making us laugh and cry ~ sometimes at the same time ! I was touched by her recollections and her determined nature to overcome a childhood which would turn most youngsters bitter. I highly recommend this book.
This is a very fast read. I was hooked on the first page. This book was discussed in our book discussion group and everyone gave it a two thumbs up. I highly recommend this book.
I bought this book because of my book club reading it. Found out that it is my sisters favorite book. It was a very good price. It came to me very timely and was in good condition.
I loved The Glass Castle, I read it in 6 hours, it was that good and that easy of a read! Jeannette Walls is so detailed and vivid with her memoir that you find yourself in her shoes smilling one second and crying the next! It is a great book and highly recommend it!
I purchased the book because it seemed interesting and I'm glad I did. What an eye opener to the reality of some people. Life is not always a bowl of cherries and we should all count our blessings no matter how small. I am going to keep this one and it will be a must read for my child within two years!
The book was compelling, shocking, and hard to put down. Bought it because a friend recommended it, but I had no idea what to expect. I rated it GOOD because EXCELLENT books don't make me cringe having to acknowledge the reality of life.
Great condition at a good price. One of the best books I have ever read and the ebay purchase allows me to have my own copy to reread and pass to friends.
My book club selected this for February selection. I usually prefer reading fiction, but this memoir was very good. It is a quick read and you get caught up in the lives of the children of this dysfunctional family.
I loved this book. This was truely a disfunctional family. In the beginning, you really liked the father, because he was teaching his children about life and how to respond to what happened to them, but, as the story progresses, you do not like him because of his drinking and mistreatment of the children, and the things that surround them. to say that the children were abused would be a lesson in understatement, to say they survived would be a lesson in how to survive anything life hands you and not have to see a shrink about your younger years. Excellant read.
I read about this book in a review of books in our local paper, and was glad I read it, even though it is indeed not a new book.
Great book - written well - an easy read. I read it in a day or so. Very detailed description of author's life. A little sad to read because the parents obviously need help and the kids live a sad childhood. The ending of the book is a little abrupt and leaves a few unanswered questions, but overall a good book to read.
This book was very interesting, but I couldn't help but notice some similarities to the classic "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." Ms. Walls later in the book notes that that particular novel was one of her favorites. It was interesting how she was so accepting of her parents, if indeed life was as difficult as portrayed. I recognized the area and attitudes being from Southern West Virginia myself. I would recommend this book, not as a feel good read, but as a reality check for those who have never had to wonder where the next meal was coming from.
I bought this book for a book club I belong to. It was the best book we had read in a long time. Pretty much everyone loved it and responded to it. I'm an English teacher and I loved it...! It's a fantastic example of one of my favorite genres, Memoir / Creative Non-Fiction-- when people write about real stuff but in their own way. Walls does an outstanding job retelling her unbelievable upbringing with vivid detail and dark humor. If you're looking for something to spark discussion at a book club or just a great read to connect to, pick this one up-- you won't be disappointed.
I had to buy this book for one of my classes, but I really enjoyed it. It was a very quick read. It definately held my attention. I would have read this even if it wasn't assigned. It is a true story of a girl growing up within a dysfuntional family. Despite the family problems, I found that all of the characters were relateable.
Love the fast shipment! I haven't read it yet but the reviews on it were great. I love being able to pay close to nothing on half.com,new books cost a lot. It's nice having them delivered to you as well.
