The boss's greatest hits! I like the second disc the most which has the majority of his classic songs. If your in the same boat then I wouldn't pay more than $10 plus shipping because you can get these tracks on Bruce Springsteens greatest hits.

As the title suggests, this is THE essential Bruce Springsteen. There are songs I've never heard of before ("American Skin", "County Fair") as well as the best sellers of his over the years. I like all of the songs about the same, but of course there are the stand-outs: "Born in the U.S.A."; "Glory Days"; and "Born to Run". I did, however, think there were a few "essentials" missing, both from the "Born in the U.S.A." album. Those are "I'm on Fire", and "I'm Goin' Down". Those are two of the songs that epitomize Bruce for me, but this is still definitely a compilation worth owning.

You can't narrow the Boss down to two CDs. But you can be happy.

Pros:
All the selections are good, the bonus disc is worthwhile.

Cons:
Missing a lot of great music, nowhere near to being a definitive collection.

Bruce Springsteen himself needs no introduction. But this two-CD anthology of the man does, as it seems to be advertising itself as a definitive compilation of the Boss, when in fact it is nowhere near close to that. Conventional wisdom on Mr. Springsteen says that the man is really an album-oriented artist and is thus hard to summarize in a compilation, even a two-CD one. That argument may be born out by the disastrous attempt at a single disc Greatest Hits a few years ago. While The Essential Bruce Springsteen may seem like a good choice for the very casual Springsteen fan on first notice,..

The Essential Bruce Springsteen never skips a beat, even if it's incomplete.

Pros:
They placed 30 career-spanning cuts on two CDs, and the rarities disc is sweet.

Cons:
There will be a judge of track selection, since some classics are lost.

It was bound to happen after about 35 different releases. I was anticipating it from the moment they had released so many of them it had began to be a trend. They had already reached Bob Dylan, Sly Stone, Johnny Cash, The Clash, Miles Davis, and even Men At Work. I didn t know how it was going to be done, or what was going to go into it, but damned I was when I finally saw it for myself. It is here, it is now... ...it is THE ESSENTIAL BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN! Did I say that out loud? Much like the retrospective releases of Dylan, Davis or Cash, it is impossible to have 2 CDs do complete justice to..

Pros:
Offers tracks from every Springsteen album released from 1972 through 2002, plus unreleased bonus tracks.

Cons:
Undoubtedly leaves out essential tracks.

In the liner notes of The Essential Bruce Springsteen, Springsteen makes clear the obvious problem in compiling such a collection. Granted, there are some tracks that are universally accepted essentials, such as Born to Run, and Thunder Road, , but the necessity of other tracks can be debated. For example, many Springsteen fans would cite the notable exceptions of such standards as Racing in the Street and Backstreets as weaknesses in the collection. However, as Springsteen also said in the liner notes, this collection was not compiled with those die-hard fans in mind. We saw a lot of new.
