Though more hardcore Dylan fans might not find some of their personal favorites on here, any moderate Dylan fan to those who are just being introduced to his music will find this collection more than satisfying. Both discs capture some of Dylan's finest musical creations that normally would only be available through the purchasing of his multitude of greatest hits albums. Unlike other "Essential" compilations, this is truly the best Bob Dylan has to offer.
I love Bob Dylan so when I saw the songs on the CD I thought it was really great but when I received it I was really surprised that someone would sell a CD copy on ebay. Every single time the products I purchase or good or excellent but this time the CD is extremely scratched and IT'S A COPY. Wow, isn't that against the law?
Bob Dylan is one of the most influential people in all of music. Everyone has heard at least one of his songs at some point. This disc is the perfect introduction to his many styles, lyrical approaches, and career phases. From the raw, early classic "Like a Rolling Stone", to the layered "Not Dark Yet", listeners are in for a treat from the opening track to the albums closing. This collection comes highly recommended as an excellent sampling of one of rock's great legends' music.
THIS IS A GREAT COLLECTION OF SONGS IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE BOB DYLAN EXPERIENCE OR JUST A NOVICE. ALL THESE SONGS HAVE SURVIVED THE TEST OF TIME AND ARE WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES IN THEMSELVES. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT COLLECTION IF YOU DON'T OWN BOB DYLAN'S ALBUMS FROM THE SIXTIES OR ARE JUST LOOKING FOR SOME HIGHLIGHTS ON MR. DYLAN'S CAREER. THIS SET HOWEVER JUST SCRATCHES THE SURFACE OF THE MAGIC THAT DYLAN CREATES.
Of course, given Dylan's incredible wealth of material, this collection could easily have been a 4 disc set. Longtime Dylanistas such as myself may lament the exclusion of such perfect songs like 'The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll' (which is perhaps the most affecting protest song ever) and 'Every Grain of Sand,' but for the beginner this is an excellent and accessible introduction to America's greatest living poet. Without being overwhelming (as Dylan often is), these 30 tracks showcase his stellar songwriting skills, unique vocal stylings, and yes, his genius.
The tracks run chronologically, and include his best known songs -- i.e., 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man' -- but there are some lesser known gems like 1965's scathing 'Positively 4th Street' and 1983?s 'Jokerman.' Too bad there aren?t any liner notes to speak of, though. Suggestion for newbies: Buy this one, take it all in, then explore his great studio albums, such as 'Blonde on Blonde' and 'Blood on the Tracks.'

Milk That Legend!

Pros: At least people will hear some classic Dylan.
Cons: Overshadowed by other compilations, and missing very essential tunes.
Uh oh...here comes Dopple again to knock a compilation for it's structure, despite the fact that is filled with awesome music. But I must. This seems to be nothing more than yet another attempt by Sony to milk the Dylan catalogue for all it is worth. In between his last two albums, Time Out Of Mind and Love

The Dylan Sampler

Pros: Great music from a legend at a good price. Excellent starter set.
Cons: No frills.
I m twenty-six years old. I came to Bob Dylan because I had heard and liked a few of his tracks, and I knew his reputation as a major figure in rock, especially during the 60s. I wanted to look more deeply into his work, and this two-disc set lets me do that for under $25. THE ESSENTIAL BOB DYLAN starts with Blowin in the Wind, recorded in 1962, and ends with the excellent Things Have Changed, which Dylan laid down in 99 for the soundtrack to the motion picture WONDER BOYS. There are thirty tracks total, fifteen on each disc. It includes all his most recognizable work, such as Tangled Up In..
