The Game - The Documentary [PA]2005
Review created: 11/21/06
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Documentary is rapper The Game's first major-label album. It features collaborations with G-Unit members 50 Cent and Tony Yayo, as well as Eminem, Nate Dogg, and others.

It debuted into significant commercial success upon its release, starting at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 with more than 586,000 units in its first week, and was eventually certified 2x platinum and sold 5 million copies world wide. Singles from the album include "How We Do," "Dreams," "Hate It or Love It," and "Put You On The Game". The Documentary received favorable reviews, with many critics praising the album's production in particular; however, some criticized The Game's tendency to name-drop Shady/Aftermath and West Coast artists in his lyrics.

The album has brought the L.A. area and even the West Coast back as a force in the main-stream hip hop scene, which it had not been since the release of Dr. Dre's 2001. Like Dre, who executive-produced The Documentary, The Game is from Compton, and was a fan of Dre and his '80s Compton group N.W.A. prior to the beginning of his own hip-hop career. Also notable is that despite the fact that The Game is from the West Coast, several big-name producers for East Coast artists contributed to the album's beats, including Just Blaze and Kanye West.

While the album was released under the G-Unit label and several of its hit singles feature the group's frontman 50 Cent (who co-executive produced the album with Dre,) a feud erupted shortly following The Documentary's release, where 50 Cent kicked The Game out of G-Unit for defending Nas, Jadakiss, and Fat Joe in a radio interview, all rappers that G-Unit was feuding with at the time.

Great lyrics meet smooth West Coast style
Review created: 01/04/06
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Dre protégé The Game backs up a great production team on his debut CD, The Documentary, with great lyrics and his smooth West Coast style. The Game often raps about his gang banging past and often sings about his near brush with death after being shot in 2001. But he also shows an unexpected mature and sensitive side.

The Game raps nicely along side female emcees Faith Evans, on the introspective Don't Need Your Love, and Mary J. Blige in Don't Worry. The CD is filled with appearances from other top shelf emcees including 50 Cent on three tracks, Nate Dogg on two, and Eminem. The Game and 50 work nicely together as they alternate verses on How We Do and 50 gives a great hook verse to the catchy Hate It Or Love It. The best song on the album is the Kanye West produced Dreams, where Game speaks about his rise to the top after being shot five times and left for dead only a few years earlier. The explosive We Ain't is a good track, also, as Eminem and Game compliment each other nicely.

The Game does his share of name dropping throughout the album, but most notably on the title track. Here he goes after Ja Rule with the line "don't wear throwbacks, or drive Maybachs." At the same time he also pays much deserved respect to East Coast legends Nas and Jay-Z. He also pays homage to 'Pac and Biggie many times thorughout the CD. The Game takes a lot of shots at other emcees on the title track for someone who claims he doesn't get caught up in beefs. The Game pays respects to hometown rap pioneers NWA many times and even claims he spits with that old NWA style.

You can think of the Game as a 50 Cent with a bigger vocabulary. He has that suave street style, but where 50 rambles on about meaningless garbage, most of the time Game uses his airtime to say something meaningful. He says he has studied the classics, from Reasonable Doubt to Illmatic to The Chronic. And while The Documentary doesn't live up to these classic debuts, it still certainly deserves a permanent spot on your iPod playlist.

Ol School Gangsta Rap at It's Finest
Review created: 11/22/05
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Game respects the ol school and it shows in his rhymes. He knows his heritage and everyone is paid thier due when The Game opens his mouth. Game came correct on his debut. Dre's beat, Game Ol School lyrics and 50 singing the corus. Game will take you on a sentimental journey back to the ol days of King Tee, Compton's Most Wanted, South Central Cartel and DJ Quik. He brings back that gangsta rap that has been gone for so long. His lyrics and his actual voice will make you want to dust off your old cassettes. He has seen the gangsta life now let him tell you about it, Get on for the ride back to the Gangsta Rap Ol School.

Best Tracks:
Hate It Ir Love It
Dreams
Runnin
How We Do

He's like Eazy-E, Dre, Snoop and Tupac combined -- minus the talent
Review created: 11/12/06

Pros:
Some dope beats.

Cons:
If there's a duller rapper today, let me know

I don't get it. Well actually I probably do. While everyone was busy claiming that 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew were ruining hip hop, The Game was the only G-Unit Records artist (now ex-artist) to escape such condemnation and receive more positive reviews. A coupla things might explain this. For one thing, he can easily out-rhyme 50, which isn't especially hard in the first place. Plenty of people seem to think the production on this album's hot too, which I'll agree with to an extent, though despite all the big-name talent there are some definite disappointments. However, a few things work...

P.H.A.D.E.S: Promotion, Hype, And Decent Emceeing Skills
Review created: 11/22/05
by: snik1-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Music

Pros:
Well-written and well-emphasized

Cons:
Gets ahead-of-himself sometimes

Rewrite You know much about The Game? He was promoted as being the savior of the Western coastline. He s that rapper that made people say Someone in G-Unit has skills? and immediately become curious. He was the one who created the feat of three hundred bars that dissed the most hypocritical rap group in the biz, even if he said the same line worded differently every few bars. Is he my new favorite artist because of that? No. But The Game is certainly a pleasurable startover for gangsta rap, especially ever since he was unfairly kicked out of the most generically monstrous group of it in these.

A gluttony of di*kriding, hot beats & punchlines: Game's surprising "The Documentary"
Review created: 01/07/05
by: paulyoungotti -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
SICK production, Game's a better MC than the rest of G-Unit, little filler.

Cons:
Couple of weaker cuts, no lyrical depth or variety, too much d*ck riding.

The rise of the newest emcee to get a record deal from Dr. Dre and Eminem's Aftermath/Shady conglomerate is Game. You may have heard of him. Over the past few weeks hype has been building, hype similar to that experienced by 50 Cent before his 2002 debut, about "Cali's Last Hope" Game. Commercially, Game's hyped debut album "The Documentary" can't fail; he has the right blend of thuggishness, hot beats, hype, and big-time promotion. More importantly; does he deserve to? The promise behind The Documentary was sizeable; is Game more talented than the rest of his WACK AS FU*K G-Unit posse? Can...

Does The Game really have game?
Review created: 06/09/05
by: jbrd -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The Game's vocals, lyrics, most production and did I mention The Game's vocals?

Cons:
3 tracks are either overproduced or just plain dull.

Uh-Oh! It's another G-Unit/Aftermath member. Jayceon Taylor a.k.a. The Game has released his debut album--The Documentary. In G-Unit fans, they'll buy The Documentary without even thinking if the album will be any good...while others will find reviews on whether the album will be any good or not. Well, this is my review...on The Game--The Documentary Westside Story featuring 50 Cent: For the first track, The Game tries to start the album off with a bang. In my opinion, he does and does not. The beats are sharp and medium hits on the drums with a dark then light tunes on the piano. They go...

The Game Cherishes His Heroes Too Much on The Documentary
Review created: 03/24/05
by: MattA75 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
generally good production, some decent beats, a few decent all around tracks

Cons:
his nose is up a lot of people's a*ses, repetitive, boring, way too long

I knew I should've listened to my gut instinct on this one... The near universal lauding of The Game's debut record The Documentary convinced me though that maybe I was missing out on something good. So when I saw it in the "just in" bin at the library, I decided to grab it and give it a shot. Sigh In some ways, The Documentary is a step above your normal G Unit related release. The Game, aka Jayceon Taylor, shows off occasional solid flow skills, and even has some excellent lyrical witicisms. In between though, this dude who tries so hard to sound tough ends up with his tongue so far up his..
