This is the classic coming of age in the Vietnam war era. What these guys went through during and after the war was terrible.Great cast. Robert Deniro was the best in this role. It had been many, many years since I saw it. But I just had to have it for my collection. Highly recommend.

  Good Movie

Good movie with lots of big name stars, also one of the best war movies of all time. The movie is very long so make sure you have time to sit down and watch it all. I would rate this movie in my top 10 of all times, and my second favorite war movie, second only to Full Metal Jacket.

The Deer Hunter - I love it!
Review created: 07/18/07

There is just something about this movie that I just love. I'm 28 years old and my dad who is a Marine first watched it with me. There is soooo much going on in this film it is incredible. My 20 year old sister and I use to watch it when it would come out on TV and just have a ball. You laugh and you cry. Everyone has a right to their own opinion. I'm just glad I own this movie!

This famous Vietnam era movie is strongest in showing the friendship between a group of steel workers before they go off to war and after they return. The actual Vietnam part is completely forgettable and unrealistic-but the characters and their love for one another is the strength of this movie. Recommended as a war era drama, not for its' depiction of soldiers in 'Nam.

I have always loved this movie. I do have this movie in VHS but I always wanted it in DVD. I had been looking for this movie at several different stores but I could never find it. One day I was checking on Ebay and I found that someone was selling it so I bid on it and I won. The DVD was brand new and it was sealed. The price was good as well. One day I did see this movie at a store and I noticed that the price was alot higher than what I had paid. I am happy that I bought this product.

The Deer Hunter or The Journey To The Center of Boredom

After hearing so much about how awesome this movie was I saw it for myself. This boring experience was worse than doing arts and crafts with my grandmother, or indulging in underwater basket weaving courses. Nothing made sense and it was drawn out way too far, yes I understand the emotional value between Walken and Deniro, but there were too many worthless insignificant events leading up to that for me to really even care, and what in the hell is the deal with all of the russian roulette, makes no sense at all. Don't waste your time, and don't buy this one.

Recommended DVD's That Are Actually Good:
Downfall
Stalingrad
Patton
Schindler's List
Apocalypse Now Redux
Cross of Iron
Dr. Strangelove

This movie has won many awards in its day. It is a classic War movie about Pennsylvania Steelworkers and their lives before the Vietnam War as well as during and after. It's just over 3 hours - so be sure you're comfy. Robert DeNiro and Meryl Steep performed very very well in this movie which won them awards.

  The Deer Hunter No More
Review created: 03/22/05
by: mcmaster -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The acting was excellent.

Cons:
The story is somewhat dull and it's too long.

Michael: You know what those are? Those are sun dogs. It means a blessing for the hunter sent by the Great Wolf to his children. It's an old Indian thing. Directed By Michael Cimino Robert Deniro as Michael Vronsky Christopher Walken as Nick Meryl Streep as Linda John Savage as Steven Deer Hunter 1978 Plot / Story Deer Hunter is about a group of very close friends who work in a steel mill in Pennsylvania during the Vietnam war. The story is set in the late sixties and these guys have decided to volunteer to join the Army and serve in Vietnam. Just a bunch of young, hard working, patriotic men.

  one shot: THE DEER HUNTER
Review created: 01/11/04
by: Stairway2Drew -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
performances, emotionally draining

Cons:
tedious, some abandoned subplots

Not being a film historian - not to mention lacking the resources to accurately ascertain - I wouldn't know what war has served as the basis for the most American movies. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd probably say World War II. If asked to hypothesize which war has served as the basis for the most diverse, disparate set of films, I'm reasonably sure I'd cite the Vietnam War. Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter surfaced in a glut of late-'70s movies about 'Nam that included Coming Home the same year and Coppolla's brilliant Apocalypse Now the next. In the '80s, we saw more Vietnam films,...

Pros:
Direction, Cast, Cinematography, Score, Production.

Cons:
Some Plot Holes on Timing & Historical Factors that Will Irk Some.

Michael Cimino's 1978 film The Deer Hunter is a three-hour anti-war drama about three Pennsylvanian steelworkers whose lives were changed during their service in the Vietnam War. Written with screenwriters Deric Washburn and Louis Garfinkle with story author Quinn K. Redeker, The Deer Hunter focuses on the idealism of men and their own world in relation to deer hunting. After seeing the horror of Vietnam and a psychologically-charged game of Russian roulette, things were never the same. Starring Robert de Niro, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep, George Dzundza, John Savage, Chuck Aspergren,...

Dr. Freudine Applauds Leo's Criticism Of The Deer Hunter~
Review created: 07/02/07
by: jankp-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
pretty package; some intense acting

Cons:
boring, pretentious, confusing, unengaging, drags, sensational...

NOTE - Dr. Freudine is a fictitious psychiatrist and my alter ego who sometimes helps me to review books, movies and music. Last time she was blown away by the documentary Occupation 101. ******************* After pushing through the auditorium s nearest, jam-packed exit, I become aware that the crowd isn t moving, but milling excitedly around the lobby. Soon I hear loud, but not angry, voices in its midst. Leo, are you a peace activist? and Leo, are you a paid movie star? and the inevitable Leo, are you married? I gather that there are reporters in for the kill. No, no, not yet, I hear the.

  A Cinematic Deer Hunt
Review created: 11/14/05
by: bilavideo-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
great performances, worthy story

Cons:
long, episodic, outdated production values

When it opened, in 1978, you couldn't give The Deer Hunter anything less than five stars - not without looking like a war hawk. This Oscar-winning film - starring Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep and John Savage - was easily the most powerful film of the year. It was frank, brutal, and bold enough to talk about the elephant in the room: The horrors of Vietnam, the demons that haunted a generation of vets and turned them into "ghosts in empty sockets." Unfortunately, time has not been kind to The Deer Hunter. It's too bookish, with a story structure that forces the audience to...
