This is what suburban life is all about. Nosey neighbors involving themselves in the business of others. Tom Hanks is hilarious in this one. The Klopeks are the new, mysterious neighbors on the block. Hanks and his neighbors are about to get to the bottom of this one and find out what's up. Unfortunatly for them, they might not like what they find. A very funny movie where the humor hints towards the bizarre. The Burbs is a must for your comedy DVD collection.

This is my all time favorite movie. It is funny and makes a person want to live in a subdivision just like it. How neat it would be to have neighbors like Art,Ray and Rumsfield in your neighborhood.
This movie was near impossible to find on DVD and was very happy when I found it.

This is one of Tom Hanks' better comedic roles as a laid back suburban family man, who with his suspicious neighbors, feels that the new family on the block is up to no good. After a few recon missions around the house that fail to give them the scoop on these weirdos with the dead lawn, a suburban signal flare that you don't belong there, they just go up and ring the bell. Inside the house they meet the eccenric Klopecks who are always on the move for some reason, and soon will be moving again. The next day when the Klopecks go to make more moving arrangements, the gaggle of suspicious neighbors springs into action. With full military precision they gain entry to the creepy home and procede to the basement. There, Mr. Peterson (Hanks) and his cohort (Rick Ducommun), break a gas line digging for evidence in the basement trying to link the Klopecks to the disappearance of an elderly neighbor. Just as they are running from the leaking gas line, the Klopecks are returning home. Also returning home is the neighbor they all thought was murdered by the newcomers. Peterson (Hanks), running from the fireball that was thw Klopecks' house sees that they have returned with the cops, and all hell breaks loose, with fingers of accusation pointing everywhere, Peterson gives up and concedes defeat. He voluntarily dives into a waiting ambulance, hoping to get that rest he missed on his "vacation". The neighbors were right after all, and the evil Dr. Klopeck is there trying to silence Ray Peterson once and for all. After a struggle, the ambulance crashes, and its all over for the Klopecks, and the evidence in the trunk of their car is enough for the cops. Overall a little corny acting and dull jokes don't ruin this Hanks classic.

The Burbs - Great movie about a guy who is on vacation with plenty of time on his hands. He suspects his neighbor is killing people and sets out to prove it. Kind of like 'Rear Window' except funny.

The Burbs -- 9 out of 10 (Worth seeing!!)
Review created: 02/10/08

If you haven't seen The Burbs - SHAME ON YOU!! Rarely will you ever find a better cast of characters: Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Gale Gordon, and even Wendy Schaal. It is hilarious, and loaded full of quotable lines and quirky scenes that keep you guessing. Wonderfully acted by Bruce Dern who manages to be both "gruff" and "silly" in the same breath. Cory Feldman, oddly enough, is a part of the cast and he is great!
If you live in the suburbs, you'll "get" this movie. It will make you laugh and it will even get you sitting on the edge of your seat at times.
I bought it because I've loved this movie from the first time I saw it. It's not your typical movie - which is probably why it didn't fare so well in the theaters (years ago). However, it is a classic in our household and whenever I need a really good laugh than has some suspense and action - this is the one to choose.
Only down side to it is a dream scene that goes one step too far, I think. I usually fast forward thru it - although it's not really that big of a deal. I just don't care for it. You can judge for yourself.
But I give it a 9 out of 10. I hope you'll love it too!

I loved the DVD. Well, I really gave it to my son-in-law for Christmas. It came new and unopened, yes, I did leave it that way. We watched it at their home. Thanks so much for the prompt time of sending it. I will be ordering more things. Actually do have a book that is being shipped that I just ordered for my Granddaughter (The Cry of The Cat). So again thank you for making me feel safe enough to go on-line and order things like this. You're ALL great.

  The movie is FANTASTIC!!!
Review created: 09/06/07

I love the entire Movie, the cast of Tom Hanks, Corey Feldman, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher, not to mention the Guy off of the old "laugh In" show don't know his name, but it makes for a Fantastic movie. There is nothing to dislike about this MOVIE!!!If you want to Laugh alot, just watch "The Burbs". It has some language, not harsh and not to much. My Favorite Part is when Bruce falls off of his roof and shoots the Window out of his Car.Buy or Rent a copy and enjoy a classic from Tom Hanks.

  The Burbs (1989) Tom Hanks
Review created: 05/26/07

Ray Peterson, (Tom Hanks), says he needs to take a vacation. His idea of vacation is staying home and doing nothing while the wife, Carol, (Carrie Fisher) nags him to get a suitcase ready for a week out at a family lake spot. What really happens in this slightly twisted plot is that Ray and his buddies, (Rick Ducommun & Bruce Dren) start to spy on the new suspicious neighbors, the Klopeks who live in their unattended hom which is somewhat similar to the 'other' Myers house that was used in Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers. The film is actually rather amusing seeing three adult men acting like five-year-olds who can't stop thinking of what's behind door number one.

Set in an average neighborhood that is anything but average, Tom Hanks portrays suburbanite Ray Peterson, who finally takes a much-needed week of vacation. However, Ray doesn't use the time to jet off to some exotic locale, there are no frolicsome adventures in his plans, all he wants is a week of mindless relaxation in his own comfortable suburban home. His wife Carol (Carrie Fisher) warns him that he's liable to go crazy from the boredom, but he refuses to listen. The nothingness finally does get to him, however, and he creates a little excitement for himself by spying on his neighbors - the Klopeks, a mysterious, oddball family that just moved in to a dilapidated home down the street. When the neighborhood grouch mysteriously disappears, Ray and a motley crew of other neighborhood crackpots begin to concoct wild theories about the strange, and perhaps murderous, goings on in the Klopek's creepy, old house. For one brief, shining moment their lives seem to have some meaning and purpose as Ray and his friends become consumed with the secrets of the bizarre family. Tom Hanks is hysterical as Ray, bring his own brand of boyish charm and zany slapstick comedy to the screen.

Tom hanks is excellent in this cult classic

The Burbs is a cult classic black comedy directed by Joe Dante and stars Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher and Corey Fledman among other reocognisable faces.
The story is based around a group of suburbanites and their obsession with a strange new family in the neighbourhood called the Clopeks. Their overactive imaginations lead them to delve deeper into the odd activities taking place at the Clopek residence, such as the strange noises coming from the basement, digging up the back yard in the middle of the night (like grave diggers) and the general odd behaviour of the family.

What makes this film so appealing is that this could take place in any neighbourhood you care to think of. The suburb is otherwise very ordinary - set routines, nosy neighbours and typical banter you would find in a quiet suburb.

The Burbs features a fantastic cast, lively script and some genuine laughs. The characters are all fantastic to watch and you learn to love them all for their individual qualities (of which there are many).

This is the uncut version of one of the best films I have ever seen. The only part I have never noticed before was the inclusion of a four letter swear word in one scene (for those who want to know, it begins with "s"). I didn't notice any other differences to when it is on television.

This DVD only includes a 90 second teaser trailer from when the film was released but the film is so good you shouldn't let the lack of extras put you off. This is easily one of my all time favourite films. Very little comes anywhere close to the quality of this little gem. An incredible film!

This is a classic you have to own. If you live in the subBURBs or the city, you can relate to this outrageous comedy. I think every neighborhood has a KLOPEK family(not exactly normal). The kids who seem to know what's really going on in the neighborhood, and the dog who fertilizes other peoples lawns. It's full of slapstick, and horror, all wrapped up in one movie. The cast is great. Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Cory Feldman,Rick Ducommun and more. You'll watch it over and over just to catch all little background clues, and witty sound effects.

Tom Hanks Deals With Strange Neighbors in The 'Burbs
Review created: 07/08/07
by: dragonfire88-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Funny, entertaining movie. Good cast.

Cons:
Could be too dark for some viewers.

Everyone has probably had at least one neighbor that they didn't like or thought was strange. People pick different ways to deal with those types of neighbors. Tom Hanks had to deal with that situation in his movie The 'Burbs. Ray Peterson lived in a quiet suburban neighborhood with his wife Carol and son Dave on Mayfield Place. Everyone on the street knew everyone else until the Klopek family moved in right next door to Ray. After a month, no one had talked to them or even seen them outside of the house. Crows had never been around before, but they started to hang around the Klopek s yard....

Is Tom Hanks Trying to Tell Us Something?
Review created: 06/14/05
by: bilavideo-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
hilarious, masterful, original, clever

Cons:
a juggling of tone and theme not everyone "gets"

In 1989, the Age of Reagan was starting to wear. The dream of a better life had produced a boom and, along with it, a suburban reality: lawns to mow, mortgages to pay, families to raise and the boredom of middle age. The Burbs is a surreal, screwball comedy that fits that moment. Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is a guy with a little too much time on his hands. Already stressed by his job, he takes a week off from work to relax. That, it turns out, is easier said than done. It doesn't help that Ray's neighbors are all maniacs, most of them middle-aged dorks who act like children. His nextdoor...

Pros:
Lots of fun and laughs

Cons:
Little to none.

In order to make up with everyone I so deeply offended with my last review (Meet the Fockers), I ve decided to extend myself in the opposite direction and review a movie I ve seen in its entirety more than any other movie that I ve seen (or half-seen) in my life. I ve experienced this movie in segments on TV. I ve watched it numerous times on DVD and VHS. I ve seen it edited for content and time, as well as unedited. I can quote large blocks of the script forward and backward. Perhaps, I may very well never have finished the credits, but unless Tom Hanks comes out naked, lactating from a fake.

Why isn't this a cult classic?
Review created: 03/24/00
by: Refined_edge -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
hilarious, great cast

Cons:
none

I've probably seen "The Burbs" more than anyone on Earth, with the exception of my father and sister, who I usually watch it with. And I seriously wonder why it doesn't have a cult following. Or maybe it does and I just don't know about it... I don't remember when my family first discovered this movie, but it has since become THE movie that we rent when we can't think of anything else to rent. We actually stop what we're doing to watch it every time it's on cable. I'm surprised we don't own it on video yet. It's a very underrated comedy that you can watch over and over again and not get bored.

The Burbs, A True Comedic Classic.
Review created: 07/09/01
by: Rasputin08 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Tom Hanks, It is a hilarious movie, Corey Feldman, other great characters

Cons:
Not enough people have seen it.

The Burbs is a truly American comedy. It takes place in the supposedly safe and normal suburbs. Ray Peterson(Tom Hanks) is just a regular guy who is on vacation from work, and just wants to relax at home, but between his wife, his son and his neighbors it is not an easy task. His neighbors are all odd in their own ways. Their is Ray's best friend(played by Rick Ducommon), who is very nosey and is like a large child(a very large child). He is very funny in this movie and I like him in all his acting roles, even though most are very small and far and few between. He antagonizes and pushes Ray...
