In 1989, the Age of Reagan was starting to wear. The dream of a better life had produced a boom and, along with it, a suburban reality: lawns to mow, mortgages to pay, families to raise and the boredom of middle age. The Burbs is a surreal, screwball comedy that fits that moment. Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is a guy with a little too much time on his hands. Already stressed by his job, he takes a week off from work to relax. That, it turns out, is easier said than done.
