The DVD does have lot's of basic setup info and is a bit dated but it works great for setting your TV up to get the best picture. It is simple to navigate and walk through. Get it and you won't be disaponted.
I liked this product because it helped me calibrate my TV without a profesional technician. I didnt like that he adjustments were hard to get right but with time I figured it out.
I've used the others. This one provided the best results. While their information is good and interesting, You'll wade thru the first 5 chapters like pulling your boots thru muck. Then, using the adjustment screens is where the video really delivers and comes thru. While I liked the explanations and the demos, they talked far longer than necessary while you watched a still screen and told you not to use the explanation screen to do the adjustments. I didn't like that you had to leave the explanation screens to do the adjustments. For most of the screens they should let you adjust while they explained. Some of it was complicated enough that I had to go back to the explanation screens to make sure I was using the right adjustment or filter and then back to the adjustment screens. After all is said and done, I've got a great picture. This was the video that gave me best info how to very accurately adjust the sharpness, tint and saturation. There were lots of additional test patterns for convergence and tests for some things I had never known. I learned lots, even though I thought I had a good understanding before I started. It will also test the abilities of things you can't usually measure, like the adequacies of your high power supply and the drives of the different colors. It could save you from an unnecessary trip to the repair shop. After you've been thru it once, adjusting your second tv and your friend's tv, goes much faster and easier.
In earnest, it is hard to say whether or not this DVD has made a huge difference. I can say that the factory settings gave me headaches, but what I managed to set it to, with a blind-eye so to speak, was quite close to what the DVD's output was. I will say that my antiquated DVD player, an old, non-progressive Toshiba probably does factor into the equation. There is probably a ton of data lost, even with s-video factoring in. I would recommend this DVD for people who don't wish to spend the money on an "expert" and believe that what they're seeing and hearing is truly all that matters.

Pros: Many video and audio calibrations tests to try. <BR/>Entire DVD plays in Dolby Digital
Cons: Too many basic home theatre explanations definitions. Hard to navigate test screens.
This is a review of the Avia Guide to Home Theatre DVD with the Blue/Green/Red filters. I purchased this DVD as I have a Hitachi Rear Projection 57SWX20B monitor, and never had it calibrated at all, with the exception of the automatic "magic-focus" option. My other relevant components include a Denon AVR1803 receiver, Paradigm Monitor 7, Titan, CC300 and PS subwoofer. Panasonic Progressive Scan DVD player. Hoping to avoid $400 ISF calibrations, but wanting something better than nothing, I went ahead with the AVIA. First thing I liked, the whole DVD is broadcasted in Dolby Digital. No DTS...

Home Theater Necessity

Pros: Helps adjust your home theater settings- especially video
Cons: Hard to navigate, should have better defined chapter breaks
If you have spent the money to put together a quality home theater, and especially if you have a TV larger than 27 , you need this DVD. To simply open the packages and plug your components together will not provide the optimal performance. You need some tweaking. For me, the video optimizations are where this DVD really delivered the goods. There are some monotone narratives describing the basics behind how different types of monitors work, blah, blah, blah. To sum up their whole presentation, TV settings out of the box are just wrong. You can try and set the brightness, contrast, color, hue..

Pros: Very thorough and useful, will improve any HT setup
Cons: No DTS audio test tones.
The AVIA Guide to Home Theater is like an encyclopedia of home theater. You will probably never obtain the best performance out of your HT system without this DVD. If you were trying to decide whether to purchase "Video Essentials"(VE) or the "AVIA Guide to Home Theater"(AG), I would not be of much help since I have never seen the VE DVD. From my understanding, the AG does not have everything that the VE has, nor does the VE have everything that the AG has. I did find that the AG had everything that I wanted and more. It is quite difficult to do a thorough review of the AG DVD because of how..
