Lucas Nickle (voiced by Zach Tyler) is a young boy fed up with bullies and his smothering parents. Taking his aggression out on the bugs in his front yard, Lucas thinks nothing of carelessly kicking down the ant hills. Zoc (Nicholas Cage) is an ant wizard questing to find a potion to stop the human "destroyers" from killing his colony. When Zoc drops an elixir in Lucas's ear one night, the boy is shrunk down to ant size and forced to confront life from a whole new perspective. Handed over into the loving care of Hova (Julia Roberts), Lucas learns to live like an ant and tries to help save the colony before an evil exterminator (Paul Giamatti) comes to make his deadly appointment.
Here's something I haven't felt from a CG animated film so far this summer: pure delight. "Ant Bully" supplies this sensation over and over again, somehow lining up all the important elements to create one of the best examples of the genre I've seen in recent history.

Adapted from the book by John Nickel, "Ant Bully" is first and foremost a lesson for kids on the importance of teamwork and appreciating those willing to help you. Similar films (like this summer's "Cars") would drown trying to sell the moral, but "Bully," under the radiant direction of John Davis ("Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius"), is more concerned about the possibilities for bite-size adventure the story holds.

Davis keeps the picture moving briskly, trusting the audience to understand the characters and their troubles, forgoing the typical shove-down-the-throat storytelling policy of other animated features. Save for one scene where Zoc openly wonders why humans don't work with each other to solve problems, "Bully" is blessedly fat-free of draggy lectures and melodrama, electing to let the expressive animation convey most of the internal struggles.

As with most CG films, the voicework makes the whole production. Also appearing in the film are Lily Tomlin, Meryl Streep, Regina King, and the man himself, Bruce Campbell, as a macho, but easily spooked scout ant. The most surprising cast member has to be Nicholas Cage, who always seemed like the last actor around to do a film like this. Cage is a fireworks display here, reminiscent of the acting choices of his youth, when his exuberance and playfulness made for some thrilling performances. His lively spirit carries "Bully" well, even if he's knocked out of the plot midway through. It's good to see the old Cage come out to play again, especially in a film as generously entertaining and easy to swallow as this.

Pros
+ Great voice acting & animation.
+ An epic journey as far as your imagination can stretch.
+ Fun for the whole family.
+ Great moral values.

Cons
- Some characters may be too complex for children to understand.

Comments
This is an awesome movie and a lot of fun to watch. It's a lot like 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids' with a twist. There are also a lot of cute short films that let you enjoy the characters a little bit longer.

Verdict
A fine addition for any family collection. 4.5/5

Good Moral of a Story for the whole family.

This movie had a good moral and was well worth buying. It is the story of a boy who was always bugged for being small so he bugged things smaller than him until he turned into a ant sized boy. Throughout the movie Lucas goes through many trials and tribulations and in the end turns out to be the bigger boy. Well worth watching with your children.

The Ant Bully - Another Animated Look at the World of Ants
Review created: 10/09/07

Pros:
Cute, entertaining movie with good animation.

Cons:
Could have been funnier. Too much gross humor.

Several animated movies released in 2006. I did manage to see many of them in the theater. There were a few that I wasn't able to see when they were in the theaters. I recently rented The Ant Bully, one of those movies. Lucas Nickle was a young boy that the neighborhood bully was always picking on. Lucas didn't know how to deal with the situation and ended up attacking the ants in the front yard. All the ants in the colony lived in fear of Lucas and called him the destroyer. Zoc was a wizard ant and he developed a formula that he believed could save the colony. The formula actually shrank...

In the Spirit of Honey I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

Pros:
Good Theme

All Star Cast

Doesn't rely on action to tell story

Cons:
Zoc's Story needed more development

How large is a person to an ant? How much power over a colony do we have? Ant Bully is the story of Lucas (Zach Tyler). Lucas gets pushed around and has no real friends. Because of this, he resorts to torturing ants. After much deliberation, Zoc (Nicholas Cage) devises a potion that will shrink Lucas, The Destroyer , down to their size. Once Lucas is shrunk, he's brought back to the ant colony for sentencing. After consulting with the Queen (Meryl Streep), it's determined that Lucas will be sentenced to live among the colony. His teacher will be Hova (Julia Roberts). Well, that's the overview.

Pros:
nada

Cons:
everything

This movie is spelled out in the trailers and commercials. You see them you see the movie. I rented this movie for the kids I work with. The children were not entertained. The plot was thin and predictable. Kid messes up an ant pile a few times and he is an ant bully. Ants shrink boy and boy lives among them and appreciates them. Then helps them and eventually goes back to normal. That's it fairly boring the children were not entertained. I was not impressed at all don't wast your time and money.

 Peanut the Destroyer
Review created: 02/17/07
by: soulkissed2003 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Cute story, nice lesson about bullies tucked in there. Funny jokes the kids can understand.

Cons:
Not the best quality animation I've seen but it's ok.

In this delightful film, a boy named Lucas has some wild adventures. At the start of the story, he is being bullied by some kids at school, and lets out his angst on a colony of ants, who call him "Peanut The Destroyer". (Lucas' mom calls him Peanut, hence the nickname.) Fed up with fleeing the kid's water gun, a wizard ant concocts a potion to shrink the boy down to ant size. The wise queen ant says that when he "becomes" an ant (learns their ways, sees why the colony looks out for each other) he may return home at full size. With influence from Tom Hanks, and voice talents of Julia Roberts.
