--Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) is a handsome, youthful widower and a dedicated Democrat raising a teenage daughter. He also just happens to be the president of the United States of America, and a very popular one at that. Unfortunately, he’s also quite lonely, and the life of a president leaves little time for dating. But when he meets luminous lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening), he's instantly smitten and impulsively (and somewhat awkwardly) asks her out to a state dinner. Shocked and highly uncertain of what she's getting into, Sydney accepts his invitation, and the courting process begins--to the unrelenting delight of the media. The chief executive's protective staff, however, isn't so sure the romance is a good thing, particularly when political paparazzi capture Sydney spending the night in the presidential bedroom. While intriguing to the press, the affair spells trouble in the form of Republican presidential hopeful Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss), who uses the romance to attack Shepherd's supposed lack of family values and moral instincts. Rumson's ploy works--Shepherd's popularity plummets, weakening his reelection bid, his hand on Capitol Hill, and ultimately threatening his relationship with Sydney. If Shepherd salvages his political career, will it be at the expense of Sydney's love?

My review of the movie:
I really did enjoy this movie. I have probably seen it about 4 times now and I never get tired of watching it. It’s a great romantic comedy and it’s full of fun. I don’t think there is a dull moment in the entire movie. It’s a great Movie to watch!

Cinderella for the Clinton EraThis fun film is total fluff but an wonderful way of imagining how The White House works. It is Cinderella for the Clinton era with excellent performances by all the leading characters. The sets look authentic and the writing is sharp and witty. Enjoy.

The American PresidentA classic love story, set at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. When the President falls hard for a lobbyist, during a reelection year. He finds the simplist things like buying flowers for his girlfriend, are no easy task. This while dealing with sinking job approval numbers, an airline strike at home , and the bombing of a military base in the middle east. A group of well seasoned actors, make this film one to own.

A great viewI was never an Annette Bening fan, but this movie changed my mind. She does an excellent job in her role as the President's girlfriend, and of course Michael Douglas is always easy on the eyes. Definitely a movie that you have to have for your personal collection!

Although I am only 30 years old, I appreciated this movie from the time it came out. It is a wonderful view on how I would think the president of the United States should be and act...as a president and as a person. I purchased it because I love it and wanted to share it with my father so I got it for him for Christmas.

The American President (199, DVD)I really liked the actors in this movie and the story line. We get so caught up in ourselves that we tend to forget that just because someone is in the public eye a lot that they still have the right to have a life. This movie was a great example of this. The President is a widower and he starts dating a woman that the public doesn't approve of. The movie is done very tastefully and really makes you stop and think. I loved it!! The fact that I could get it at a better price by shopping on Ebay was a huge factor in my buying it there. Thank you Ebay for all your great sellers!!

Terrific love storyThis is a terrific movie for the entire family. Annette Benning and Michael Douglas give great performances!! You really believed that Douglas was the president of the United States because everything seemed so 'real'. This is one of the few movies out there that you can watch over and over again and never get tired of watching it!!

What a wonderful story of boy meets girl in a much bigger scale. Michael Douglas & Annette Bening play the part of a couple in a fresh new complicated love perfectly! An excellent date movie.

I have a high stress job as an attorney and I am reading regulations, writing briefs and staying on top of the world generally. I subscribe to several magazines and I combine the must reads with the mindless but interesting reads--from Time to People. That principle applies to movies also as there are times when I just need to have a good movie around that I know by heart but love to watch anyway along the genre of Sleepless in Seattle, You've got mail etc. I purchased American President as there are times I need to escape plus I am political so I find parts of it interesting although fictional and I do realize that fact. I have serious movies and like to watch them also, as I belong to Netflix, but sometimes I just need to turn off my mind and watch an enjoyable movie with a happy ending and escape the real world. I belong to Netflix and try to keep a variety of movies on hand for when I have the time to watch. I like to be entertained and not have to follow a complicated plot. I am known for just turning off my brain and tuning out the world, get comfortable and especially on a rainy Sunday I will watch American President, or a similar movie for pure enjoyment. Annette Bening and Michael Douglas are good in their roles. Overall I recommend it but then I am not a movie snob, I watch whatever I please even if it is of a typical type and predictable. Sometimes predictable is good.

This is one of those movies that you watch over and over again, and still well up at the same tender spots. Not only is there a "pre Zet-Jones" Michael Douglas at his most human peak, but Annette Benning is the women we would all love not only to marry, but to have as a sister also. When she asks, "Who is this woman, and why is the President dancing with her...?" I find myself answering along with Michael Douglas. And when he is baiting the Richard Dryfess character, I feel like cheering out loud. This is a rare movie that has the feel of the West Wing (Martin Sheen plays the Chief of Staff in this one), but is very funny, touching, and uplifting.

I use this movie in the classroom as an entertaining way for students to view the office of the President of the USA. It depicts politics, busy life of a president, White House workers, how news is spun, inter-action with foreign leaders, and the president as just another common man who is in a leadership role.
