My daughter had seen this movie years ago, it is no longer available in video stores or any retail stores we looked at. Saw it here, it was a good price and seemed in good condition. The product was everything and more and she likes it.

This movie is one of my personal favorites. It is a terrific movie if you want to a watch a great story about some guys who seem just like your average guys just out of high school. It is a popular dream to be a rock star...but befor you become a rock star you may want to see all the demands that go with the job.

That Thing You Do! = A Must See

  Fun Family Movie
Review created: 01/09/07

This is one of our all-time favorite family movies. This is a story of a small town band making it BIG. It is a great movie with music, unrequited love, humor and good characters. Very little swearing and no sex. Even our teenagers like to have friends over to watch this movie. I heard that these actors learned how to play the instruments in the movie and do all of their own singing and instrumentals. We recently purchased this movie again to give away for Christmas.
If you haven't seen it yet, get a copy today and watch it.

One of my all time favorites!

I don't remember this movie in the theaters. I don't remember any advertising for it in the media. But, by word of mouth from people who loved it, I discovered what has become one of my all time favorite movies.

The premise is that a small town garage band in the early 1960's who, because of an injury to their regular drummer, discovers a new beat and rides it to the top of the charts. It is a heady ride that takes them from talent shows to touring state fairs, starring in a movie on "the coast", and even a guest appearance on an Ed Sullivan type TV show, all in a few short months.

The movie is very gentle and quietly funny. My family probably quotes more lines from this movie than any other on a regular basis. The music is a wonderful homage to groups of the early sixties and has become some of my favorite "oldies". We bought the soundtrack and listen to it often, even now years later. The producers obviously grew up in this era and have paid attention to every detail, faithfully reproducing the clothing styles, the musical styles, the look of the cities of that era, and the culture. The casual comments of the characters delightfully reveal what was happening in American culture in the early '60s.

The movie is clean with very little profanity, no violence or sex (maybe a couple of off screen liasons are implied), and the characters are immediately likeable. I never tire of watching this movie or listening to the soundtrack. I feel like I have been invited to step back in time, thoroughly entertained, and treated with respect every time I watch it. If you haven't seen it yet, you are in for a real treat!

Outstanding, cute, funny, and clean movie. Higly recommended movie for the entire family. That song gets stuck in your head; but that's okay.

A cautionary pop fable following the meteoritic rise of "The Wonders," a fictitious foursome during the early days of pop-rock fandom. When jazz drummer Guy Patterson fills in for a session with a friend's band, a hit single is born and the smalltown boys find themselves riding a rollercoaster of success, guided by the opportunistic hand of a smooth-talking record label agent. Fun, cheerful, and innocent. Hanks directorial debut.

Excellent film in every way. A very accurate depiction of the music industry the way it was in the mid 60's. Tom Hanks didn't get the credit he deserved for this true masterpiece. The acting, writing, and directing, not to mention the fantastic all-original soundtrack is worlds ahead of any other movie of this type. It's family friendly with a great story line and a film you'll want to see again and again. I personally have the VHS, laserdisc and DVD versions and have bought copies for all of my friends who have enjoyed it almost as much as me. Fun for all, a pleasure to watch from beginning to end. Highly recommended. Don't miss it!

Well made flick. Great for the entire family. Mine range in age from 7 to 15 and they all enjoyed it. Impeccably cast, with winning performances by Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler, Steve Zahn, and others. The story progresses nicely with an entertaining plot and payoff. Beautiful period-correct sets brings you back to a simpler time. Tom Hanks deserves tons more credit than he ever got for making this film. He does a good bit in it, too. Buy with confidence.

This movie is fun...pure and simple. If you like a good story, authentic-sounding period music from the 1960s and an excellent cast, then this movie is all you need.

It's a bit hard to write a review about a product that I never received. It appears the product was put up for sale but wasn't actually available for sale. I did eventually get my money back but it was a bit disappointing.

"Don't Mess With Me! I'm From Erie, Pennsylvania!"
Review created: 02/05/04
by: bilbopooh -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
innocent fun, great music, ERIE!

Cons:
underrated

I was browsing through the cast page of a Lord of the Rings website recently and was disappointed to discover that whoever compiled the list of film credits for each actor neglected to mention Elijah Wood s role as Huck Finn, the character with which I always identified him prior to LotR. Now he is most widely recognized for portraying one of the greatest characters in British literature, but I would have thought one of the greatest characters in American literature would have been worth mentioning as well. My disillusionment was further exacerbated when my scanning of Liv Tyler s bio...

Let's Hear It For One Hit Wonders!
Review created: 02/07/07
by: donkee -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Great movie, wonderful acting, lovable characters, fantastic music...

Cons:
...not exactly thought provoking, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Ah, the 60's; the age of hippies, JFK, and great pop music. Even though I was born nearly three decades after the 60's ended, I'm able to get a glimpse at one of the best of the times in music with Tom Hank's film, That Thing You Do!.. The film, released in 1996, marks Hank's directorial debut, and went on to be nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. The movie tells the story of a fictional rock band created in 1964, though it all begins with four friends from Erie, Pennsylvania, who have the hopes of becoming a successful band. There's Jimmy Mattingly (Jonathon Schaech), the.

Pros:
Sentimental and entertaining look at rock n' roll in the early 1960s

Cons:
You'd better love the title song -- it plays over and over through the movie

This is one of those movies that I just have to watch at least a couple of times a year. Indeed, my old VHS tape of this has been run through the mill, but it still holds up just fine. I initially saw this in the theater and just had to buy the thing when it was released on video. This 1996 release was directed by Tom Hanks, who also played the part of Mr. White -- a kind of producer/agent type for the mythical Play-Tone record label. Our story starts out with a local band (called the Oneders initially, but switched to the Wonders later on so as to avoid confusion) that talked Guy Patterson ..

That Thing You Do: A Pop Back to Pops Past
Review created: 02/20/01
by: naphtalia -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
light, nostalgic and sweet

Cons:
the song gets a big grating by the end

Last night our local cable station ran a "Tom Hanks Marathon." This marathon consisted of Forrest Gump, Punchline (reviewed at http://www.epinions.com/content_9957904004) and That Thing You Do! It is fitting that this last film was included as it demonstrates Tom Hanks talents not only as a performer, but also as writer and director. The best word to describe this movie is inconsequential. It is light and sunny with no real message. What this movie evokes is an era when life was simpler, when the young folks of Erie Pennsylvania could concern themselves with making to and listening to music...

Pros:
Happy, upbeat, fun flick suitable for all.

Cons:
I can't think of a thing.

Having been born at the beginning of the 1960's and as the baby of the family trailing my "youngest" brother by 11 years I heard lots of the Mamas
