A superb album chock full of musical talent!

Temple of the Dog, is a superb album but a superb collaboration - the band features the musical talents of what went on to become Pearl Jam - Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard - and two members of Soundgarden - Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron; extremely talented musicians and vocalists who pull together to bring about a breathtaking sound!
This is the one and only release from this collaboration - brought about as a tribute to Andrew Wood - Mother Love Bone's lead singer who died untimely of a drug overdose. The lyrics were primarily the work of Cornell and reflect his place at this time - his head and his feelings having lost a close friend!
I had to purchase this just to own a copy of the powerful Hunger Strike....this is an intense deep song which not only strives to highlight the musical talents of this group...but the powerful vocal ability of both Eddie Vedder and Cornell - both have unique powerful voices which send chills donw my spine; I would go as far as to say their voices are perhaps among the best in the rock world!
There are a lot of deeply personal lyrics in these tracks - look at Say Hello 2 heaven and Times of Trouble. Each track is deep, rich in the sound that is unmistakeable grunge and aside from being wonderful to listen to, these tracks simply serve to highlight the talent in this group!!
This album is deeply powerful and helped spread the roots of the Grunge scene, and for that, as well as the incredible tracks,I will be thankful!

  Great set of Grunge
Review created: 03/15/08

Here we have a classic collaboration of Seattle music scene alumni performing a great set of tracks. Say Hello to Heaven is fresh and memorable toaday just as it was many years ago. The vocals and guitar work are great as well. Highly recommended.

This early 90's colaberation of some of the best musicians Seattle has ever produced is a testimony to the great music that comes out of that part of the country. Chris Cornell(Soundgarden) on vocals, backed on a few tracks by Eddie Vedder(Pearl Jam)! Not to mention the great guitar and other musical arrangements!

A Treasure Not To Be Forgotten

When a song that clocks in at eleven minutes plus simply flies by, you know that the music is good. That's what "Reach Down" does...along with reminding you how emotional and powerful and compelling music truly can be. This one off album was a labor of love and, yes, if you are a lover of the music born of the 90's, this album should be in your collection. But don't let that be a limit; I think if you're a music lover PERIOD, regardless of genre this album should be in your collection.

Most of us know where this album came from and what it's about: it's death and loss and longing and hopes and fears. It's a collaboration in honor of a loved and lost brother. It's future Pearl Jammers locked into a groove from that one moment in time. It's Chris Cornell writing as if his life depended on it and singing like he'd never sung before. It's some of the best that the grunge world had to offer before it became exposed and probably overexposed by the rest of the world.

So read all of the reviews here, nod your head in agreement and then purchase the album. Yes, there's "Hunger Strike", but you've got to go through "Say Hello To Heaven" to get to it and that's a necessary journey to take. Nothing says "tribute" quite like this song and, I swear, at certain points Cornell is hitting notes that truly do reach Heaven.

Chris Cornell wrote some songs for his friend Andrew Wood, former frontman of Mother Love Bone, after Andrew died. Then Chris got with the remaining members and made this. I love Chris's vocal range and the songs are beautiful. Had the cassette, got the cd so I could listen to it again. Oh yeah Eddie Vedder is also on this, it's awesome.

excellent album from the Grunge era

I have had this album since it first came out. It is one of my favorites and I still listen to it. It shows the essence of a lot of the grunge rock scene in the NW during the early 90s. Totally stripped down in kind of a jam format, especially the song Reach Down. I especially love the drumming by current Pearl Jam and former Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron. If you like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Audioslave -- you will enjoy this album.

Temple of The Dog - It's A Grunge Thing Baby
Review created: 01/08/03
by: Freak369 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Some of the best grunge tracks ever made.

Cons:
Sadly, they only released one complete CD.

Some people say that grunge is dead and buried. Some say that the must was simply too dark to survive for more than a few years. Some say that the music was melodramatic, embraced a suicidal lifestyle and romanticized drug use. Obviously the people that chose to cast their holier than thou stones at the often times misunderstood music of the era failed to see the big picture of the music. Yes, there was pain, drug use, lost lives and depression running rampant through the songs but there was also comfort, closure and a way of dealing with the less than stellar cards that life sometimes deals..

Amazing Music Made In Times of Trouble
Review created: 01/25/03
by: PacManY2J-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Music

Pros:
Absolutely everything

Cons:
It was a one-time deal.

So here I am listening to Audioslave, thinking "Man, that Chris Cornell has made some major contributions to rock." This new band is great, his solo stuff is very good, and Soundgarden - well, it's Soundgarden. But let's never forget the amazing supergroup he fronted in 1991: Temple of the Dog. Before Cornell worked with some Ragers Against the Machine, he was collaborating with Pearl Jammers. Before Pearl Jam burst into mainstream popularity, the band members were making names for themselves in Temple of the Dog, as the project featured Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Matt Cameron .

"Say Hello 2" Temple of the Dog
Review created: 08/21/01
by: lambchops-- a member of Epinions and Lead in Music

Pros:
Chris Cornell & Pearl Jam

Cons:
Very, very short

I admit it. I am a child of the late eighties and early nineties. Fortunately for me, rather than falling to the trappings of the horrible New Kids on the Block, I fell for grunge. In fact, that passion for music that developed beginning in that era is what has led me to the person I am today. Temple of the Dog is unlike any other band that existed in 1991 (the year their only album was released). In 1990, Mother Love Bone lost lead singer Andrew Wood to a heroin overdose. The remaining band members Jeff Ament (bass) and Stone Gossard (guitar) recruited Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell to...

A heck of a lot better than you might expect
Review created: 02/18/02
by: HawgWyld -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Soothing album with a good number of class rock-influenced riffs tossed in

Cons:
No follow-up disc

This album, simply put, was a victim of the alleged "grunge scene" in the early and mid-1990s. A bunch of bands from the Northwest U.S. were slapped with the generic, all-inclusive "grunge" label and that hurt the reputation of all groups involved as a lot of music from that media-created scene was absolute garbage. This fantastic disc, sadly, was lost in the shuffle. If you haven't heard it already, it's well worth owning and hearing. If you already know the story of Temple of the Dog, then scroll down a bit as I'm not going to write anything new to you in the next couple of paragraphs....

  Say Hello 2 Excellence
Review created: 05/17/02
by: chad8246 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, together, in album form

Cons:
None really

I was just a lowly high school student during the beginning of the grunge era. I started high school hearing the tunes of New Kids On The Block and Poison. I ended high school much wiser and much more musically savvy than I entered. I had begun to dabble in alternative music prior to grunge. I listened to REM and U2 plenty. And I did have a few They Might Be Giants cds, but I was basically lost musically until the rock revolution (wow, that s an exaggeration) from Seattle took over. The history of grunge is well documented so I won t go into great detail. At the heart of the scene were three..
