This is a great film. This is probably the best acting that Jodi Foster and Robert Deniro have ever done. Jodi Foster was so great that I at times would forget she was only 12 at the time this movie was shot. Great story set in a decaying NYC. I saw this movie as a 12 year old kid back in the mid 70s and did not find it toubling. NYC was creapy just like the move at the time.
The defense angle that Hinkley took was so strange during his trial. I think this movie should be shown in political science classes just for the historical perspective.
It is also nice to look at how NYC looked when the DEMS ran it.. Rudy really cleaned the place up after 40 years of poor management. I remember NYC being spooky as a kid. Now it is clean and hospitable.
What is not to love about this Deniro flick? I mean when this movie came out and you saw Deniro for the first time and you knew he was going to be a superstar. This is a movie that everyone who loves movies should have. No great movie collection is complete without Taxi Driver. Anyone and anyone who likes movies has to at least see this movie once. I recommend seeing it over and over. I don't feel like you can watch this movie once and get a real appreciation for it. Trust me, I am a movie lover and this is one flick one person should go without seeing.
C'mon...Taxi Driver is one of the best movies of its time...classic DeNiro..I highly recommend it. This movie put DeNiro on the map and featurs Cybill Sheopard and a young Jodi Foster as well
Classic excellent movie. De Niro at his best. Cybill Shepard does a good job also as does Jodie Foster. One of the best lines in a motion picture>> "Are you talkin' to me?, are YOU talkin' to ME?
For anyone who has ever wondered WHY people walk around saying, "Are you talkin' to ME?!", this movie is why. For anyone who wondered what the heck George Michael was trying to get across as a cab driver in his "Father Figure " video - this movie is your answer. It is a classic; a cultural icon, and of course, a disturbing piece of American history in the impact it had on real life would-be assassin, Hinkley. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this film is in how easy it is to sympathize with the title character. He could be anyone. Perhaps a part of him is in everyone - and that is the creepiest thought of all. Want to know what the heck all these esoteric and somewhat cryptic reviews are trying to say? SEE IT. OWN IT. You will not be the same for having watched it. DeNiro is a genius, and creepy as hell.
It is just a great movie to own. I had it once and lend to a friend and never got it back. Oh well, now I have it again. One thing I didnt like is that the seller never left me my feedback.
A gripping and landmark movie. Mr.DeNiro has many, many wonderful parts to his credit, but this film may rank as his best. At one point in this movie he is in room with an out of control headache. This is a everyday occurance for many Vietnam Vets and at this point you wonder if this is what Mr.Scorcese was trying to project. If so you can feel for Mr.DeNiro's character. A great and powerful movie.

Pros: Scorsese, Schrader, Chapman, Herrmann, De Niro & Cast.
Cons: Not a Damn Thing.
The mid-1970s for America was a period where everyone got burned out by Vietnam, Watergate, and everything else. The 1960s counterculture movement had died while America, hit hard by the lost at the Vietnam War, the economy, and the authority of its own government shortly after the resignation of president Richard Nixon after he disgraced himself with Watergate. 1975 was pretty much the year where things just lost its way as unemployment rose and everything looked awful, especially in New York City where during the hot summer of that year, a garbage strike and poverty was everywhere....

Taxi Driver: One of these days I'm going to get organized

Pros: Realistic, forces you to see through the characters eyes.
Cons: Can leave you with a 'heavy' or 'dark' feeling, not good for kids.
When I watch an American film from the 1970s or 1980s I really look for the ones that give us a gritty sense of reality built in. Granted, I don't remember the 1970s at all and in the 1980s I never visited the places most movies in this style are set (NY or LA) but I do enjoy the feel. Taxi Driver is a film from 1976 that gives you a feeling that you could walk right into it and find yourself standing in the middle of 1970s New York. Though the film doesn't appear to have been shot in any special type of camera/film combination the lighting, scenes, and costumes really locked into my mind as..

Pitiful Travis Bickle
Review created: 09/11/99

Pros: Scorsese and DeNiro are top-notch
Cons: Uncomfortably close to real life
Martin Scorsese has earned a reputation for volatile films that crawl under your skin and make you itch for days. "Mean Streets" gave us a glimpse of Scorsese's fierce talent in 1973, but it wasn't until three years later that he exploded onto the scene with "Taxi Driver," the story of Travis Bickle, the love-starved and love-obsessed titular character. Travis has become one of the most controversial characters in film history, particularly after would-be assassin John Hinckley modeled himself after the character and went gunning for Ronald Reagan. (Irony Detour: only in our crazy society...

Taxi Driver

Pros: Scorsese, Deniro, Schrader
Cons: absolutely none
In 1976, Martin Scorsese released one of the most important films of the decade, Taxi Driver. One of the most acclaimed films ever made, the movie announced the arrival of Martin Scorsese, placing him at the forefront of the so-called film school generation. The film is a magnificent accomplishment, an extraordinary combination of talent coming together all at once to create a true work of art that, perhaps better than any film before or since, is able to capture the loneliness and isolation of life. Working from a script by Paul Schrader (Raging Bull, Last Temptation of Christ, Rolling...

Psychotics for Dummies

Pros: DeNiro and Scorcese
Cons: DVD version a bit grainy
I watched Taxi Driver again last night. I think this was only my fourth viewing. I rented it so my girlfriend could see it. I was surprised that she never had. I think she was getting annoyed with me. I kept saying, This is good. Or, Watch this . The direction is amazing. Not to mention the acting. DeNiro is phenomenal. In one scene, which I have always loved, although it is not one of the memorable scenes , DeNiro is on the phone trying to convince Betsy (Cybil Sheppard) to see him again after blowing his shot. The camera trucks off to the right away from him to show a long hallway and the...
