THX 1138 (VHS)

  Dystopia, A. La. Lucas

Pros:
Very well done for a freshman effort. Well thought out.

Cons:
Stark. Grim. A little hard to follow at times.

Before there was "Star Wars" or even "American Graffitti", there was "THX-1138." During the late 1960s and early 1970s there was a popular genre of film and literature (and to some extent TV as well) that explored the condition of things after the fall of civilization. The fall tended to be from nuclear war but not always, sometimes the disaster was environmental ("Soylent Green" or "Silent Running", or possibly economic and cultural ( "Rollerball") Often the reasons were left nebulously unspecified as is the case with "THX-1138". This genera king of petered out along with the Cold War but...

  THX 1138 - Director's Cut (2-Disc Set)
Review created: 12/09/04

Pros:
Deep philosophical implications, outstanding cinematography, well-done extra features

Cons:
Glitch with the subtitles? (I'm not sure if it's a feature or a glitch)

THX 1138 I had heard a lot of commentary, both positive and negative, about George Lucas' first major film, and I decided it was time I had a look for myself. I was interested because I like the work from the early part of Lucas' career much better than the later stuff (ie - JarJar). Particularly, I heard a lot of complaints that there was minimal dialog in the film. This made me want to see it, because less dialog can mean that the film shows what is happening rather than just explains through character conversations. A good example of this is "In the Bedroom." Cinematography As I suspected,.

First Film From a True Visionary
Review created: 05/04/03

Pros:
Original visuals and detailed set/world design.

Cons:
Very slow. Almost no dialogue.

What has always set George Lucas' films apart from other Sci-Fi has been the incredible way in which he is able to make fantasy worlds seem believable. It is what, in my opinion, truly sets the Star Wars series apart from the Star Trek series. In Luke Skywalkers Tatooine home, for example, the attention that the set designers spent on making his Aunt's kitchen look real and lived it is exactly the type of detail that made the film so good. It was therefore something of a revelation to see THX-1138 for the first time and see a lot of that type of attention to detail that the later films reveal.

  THX 1138 (1970)
Review created: 12/07/99

Pros:
black humor, direction

Cons:
characters, action fans may become bored

George Lucas was a film student when he made the futuristic, surreal short "THX 1138:4EB". It won an award at the 1967 National Student Film Festival. It also got the attention of Francis Ford Coppola. He served as Executive Producer of the feature length version of the film. Lucas directed and edited the film, his feature debut, as well as co-writing the script with Walter Murch. Robert Duvall stars as the title character, a modest, thoughtful man who lives in a tightly controlled society. In this unpleasant version of "1984", men and women alike are shaved bald and wear matching white...
